Taxonomy & naming
Dawkinsia chalakkudiensis was first described from material collected in the Chalakkudi River, Western Ghats, Trichur District, Kerala, India; the holotype is deposited as SRS/ZSI F.3749 at the Zoological Survey of India. At the time of description the species was placed in the broad genus Puntius, the old catch-all for South and Southeast Asian barbs, and later appeared in some literature under the combination Dawkinsia chalakkudiensis.
The genus Sahyadria was established to accommodate a small group of Western Ghats barbs with shared morphological characters that set them apart from other South Asian cyprinids. The name honours the Sahyadri range — the local name for the Western Ghats — recognising that this genus is an exclusively Indian endemic lineage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid combination Dawkinsia chalakkudiensis; the parenthetical authority notation reflects the genus transfer after the original description. Older aquarium references may still use Puntius or Dawkinsia for this species.
The Journal of Threatened Taxa has documented the Sahyadria genus in the context of Western Ghats cyprinid diversity, confirming the group's placement within Cyprinidae and its status as a regional endemic complex distinct from the broader Puntius assemblage.

Morphology
Dawkinsia chalakkudiensis is a moderately large barb, recorded to 4.9 in total length — substantially bigger than many of the ornamental barbs familiar to aquarists. The body form follows the typical pattern for active lotic barbs: moderately elongate and laterally compressed, built for sustained movement in current rather than the deep-bodied, laterally compressed shape of slower-water shoalers.
Detailed meristic and colour pattern data from the wild-caught type series document the species' distinguishing characters within the Sahyadria complex. Like other members of the genus it lacks prominent barbels and carries the typical cyprinid single dorsal fin. Colour in life is not extensively documented in the accessible literature, but hill-stream Sahyadria species are generally silvery to pale gold on the flanks with darker pigmentation providing contrast. Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern common to barbs: females become noticeably deeper-bodied and rounder when gravid, while males may show more intense colouration.
Habitat
The Chalakkudi barb is native exclusively to the Chalakkudi River system in Trichur District, Kerala — a short, fast-draining river that descends from the Western Ghats escarpment to the Arabian Sea coastal plain. The river system encompasses a mosaic of hill-stream habitats: boulder-strewn rapids, cascading riffles, deeper pools between rock outcrops, and tributary streams shaded by riparian forest.
Water chemistry recorded for this system and for Seriously Fish's profile of the species indicates cool to moderate temperatures (59–77 °F), a near-neutral pH of 6.5–7.5, and soft to slightly hard water (approximately 90–357 ppm hardness). These figures reflect the seasonally variable nature of monsoon-driven Western Ghats rivers, where pre-monsoon low flows warm and concentrate, and post-monsoon floods cool and dilute. The species is adapted to well-oxygenated, fast-moving water with high dissolved oxygen and is highly sensitive to the slow, warm, oxygen-depleted conditions that follow habitat degradation.
Feeding
In the wild, Dawkinsia chalakkudiensis feeds as an opportunistic omnivore in the manner typical of active lotic barbs — picking small invertebrates from the substrate and water column, supplemented with algae, biofilm, and organic detritus. FishBase records the diet as including small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm (chironomid larvae) and Daphnia, consistent with the invertebrate-rich benthos of clean hill-stream environments.
In captivity the species accepts a wide range of prepared and live foods. Quality flake or small sinking pellets form a workable staple, but condition and colouration are best maintained with regular offerings of live or frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, and similar items. Like all barbs it benefits from some vegetable component in the diet, supplied by spirulina flakes, blanched greens, or grazing on algae-coated surfaces.
Mating
Dawkinsia chalakkudiensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, following the reproductive strategy universal among barbs. Courtship involves active pursuit: a ready male drives a gravid female through vegetation, over gravel, or among submerged roots, the two pressing briefly together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. No pair bond forms, no territory is defended beyond a momentary courtship space, and dominant males compete to accompany responsive females.
In seasonally variable hill-stream environments, reproductive behaviour is likely cued by the monsoon flood cycle — falling temperatures, rising water levels, and increased current velocity that signal optimal conditions for larvae. The adhesive eggs are scattered among substrate interstices or onto plant surfaces where current and crevices offer some physical protection, though neither parent attends the spawn site after eggs are released.
Breeding
No detailed captive-breeding account for Dawkinsia chalakkudiensis appears in the accessible literature, reflecting the species' rarity in the hobby. General principles applicable to Western Ghats hill-stream barbs suggest that spawning can be attempted in a separate aquarium furnished with fine-leaved plants, smooth gravel, and a moderate current from a power filter or airstone. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water cooled toward the lower end of the species' range (around 64–72 °F) mimics the pre-monsoon conditions that likely trigger breeding in the wild.
Well-conditioned adults — brought into condition over several weeks with a varied live-food diet — are introduced to the spawning tank in the evening. Eggs are adhesive and small; parents readily consume their own spawn, so removal of adults after spawning is advisable. Larvae are expected to become free-swimming within a few days of hatching, at which point fine foods such as infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii are appropriate. The species' restricted captive availability means that documented clutch sizes and reliable rearing protocols are not yet in the published literature.
In the aquarium
Dawkinsia chalakkudiensis is an uncommon species in the ornamental trade, reflecting both its Endangered status and the limited export volume from the Chalakkudi River system. When it does appear, it commands attention as a larger, more substantial barb than the familiar hobby staples: at up to 4.9 in it needs a spacious aquarium — a minimum footprint of around 47.2 in length is appropriate — with strong filtration delivering a noticeable current and high dissolved oxygen.
The tank should be set up to reflect its hill-stream origins: smooth boulders and cobbles, some fine gravel, robust or minimal planting (heavy vegetation is not typical of fast-water habitats), and good lighting that allows algae growth on rock surfaces. Temperature should be held in the cooler half of the tolerable range, ideally 64–73 °F; the species does poorly in warm, sluggish aquaria. It is a shoaling fish and should be kept in a group of at least six; in small numbers it may become anxious or aggressive. Tankmates should be robust, active species able to share cool, well-oxygenated water — other hill-stream cyprinids, loaches, or similarly sized barbs from comparable habitats.
Conservation
Dawkinsia chalakkudiensis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 15 July 2010. The Endangered designation reflects its extremely restricted endemic range — effectively limited to the Chalakkudi River system in Kerala — and the multiple pressures acting on that system. The Chalakkudi River has been subject to hydropower development, agricultural encroachment on riparian zones, water abstraction for irrigation and domestic supply, and pollution from settlements and farming operations. Each of these degrades or fragments the cool, fast, oxygenated water column on which the species depends.
Species distribution modelling cited in the literature confirms the species' narrow environmental niche and vulnerability to climate-driven shifts in the monsoon hydrology of the Western Ghats. The Western Ghats as a whole are a UNESCO World Heritage biodiversity hotspot with an unusually high proportion of endemic freshwater fish, many of which are similarly threatened. Collection pressure for the ornamental trade adds a secondary concern for an already small population. Conservation of Dawkinsia chalakkudiensis ultimately depends on watershed-scale protection of the Chalakkudi catchment, enforcement of riparian buffer zones, and monitoring of harvest levels — alongside continued documentation of the species' biology to inform management decisions.
