Taxonomy & naming
Polypterus mokelembembe was described by Ulrich Schliewen and Fabian Schäfer in 2006 in the journal Zootaxa, based on specimens from the central Congo River basin that had previously been passed over as a form of Polypterus retropinnis. Careful comparison showed the two are distinct: P. mokelembembe has a noticeably wider first dorsal-fin spine (roughly 6.4–8.1% of head length, versus 4.6–6.1% in P. retropinnis) among the differences documented in the original description, along with a distinct dorsal finlet count and overall proportions. It sits, like every bichir, in the genus Polypterus, family Polypteridae, order Polypteriformes — together with the single-species reedfish genus Erpetoichthys, the Polypteridae are the most basal surviving lineage of the ray-finned fishes (Actinopterygii), a branch that split from all the rest deep in the fossil record and has changed remarkably little since.
The species name is the memorable part: mokelembembe honours Mokele-mbembe, the legendary aquatic cryptid said by Congolese folklore to lurk in the swamps and blackwater rivers of the central Congo basin — a fitting namesake for a genuinely ancient, dinosaur-adjacent-looking fish collected from that same country. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and GBIF both list the genus and species as currently valid, with no synonyms in wide use; in the hobby it is known simply as the Mokele-mbembe bichir or, more descriptively, the dwarf Congo bichir.
Morphology
Like every bichir, P. mokelembembe wears a coat of thick, interlocking ganoid scales — rhombic plates of bone capped with a hard, enamel-like layer — that give the body a stiff, armoured feel quite unlike the soft scales of most bony fishes. Down its back runs the family's signature feature: a row of separate dorsal finlets rather than one continuous fin, each a short spine trailing a small flag of membrane. FishBase and the original description both put the count at six to eight finlets in this species, overlapping when folded flat against the back, and the first spine is distinctly wider than in its closest relative, P. retropinnis — one of the characters used to tell the two apart. The paired pectoral fins sit on fleshy, muscular lobes that the fish uses to prop itself up and clamber over the bottom almost like limbs.
Colouration is a yellowish-brown ground overlaid with large, dark, irregular blotches — a mottled camouflage well suited to a leaf-littered blackwater streambed. It is one of the smaller bichirs: FishBase records a maximum of around 10.5 in, and most sources agree it rarely exceeds roughly 9.8 in even as an adult, a genuinely dwarf member of a genus that includes fish three times that length. As in all bichirs, eyesight is poor and the fish instead relies on an acute sense of smell to find food and navigate, and a pair of primitive, sac-like lungs behind the gills lets it breathe air gulped at the water's surface — a bichir shut away from the surface can drown.
Habitat
Polypterus mokelembembe is known from the central Congo River basin, where it inhabits smaller blackwater creeks and streams rather than the main river channel — a narrower niche than many of its wide-ranging relatives. These are the classic Congo blackwater habitats: slow, shaded, tannin-stained watercourses running through rainforest, with soft, acidic water coloured the colour of strong tea by dissolved leaf litter and humic compounds, and a bed of sand, leaf debris and submerged wood rather than open, sunlit water.
As an air-breather, the species is well suited to this kind of habitat, where dissolved oxygen in the water itself can run low beneath the shade and slow flow — access to the surface, not gill oxygen, sets the real limit on where it can live. It is described as nocturnal and shy, spending daylight hours tucked among roots, wood and leaf litter and becoming active as darkness falls, matching the low-light, cover-rich blackwater streams it calls home.
Feeding
This is a nocturnal ambush predator that hunts almost entirely by scent rather than sight, cruising slowly over the substrate after dark and locating prey through smell before engulfing it with a quick snap of the jaws. In the wild it almost certainly takes the standard bichir diet of aquatic insect larvae, worms and other small invertebrates encountered on the blackwater streambed, in keeping with its close relatives across the genus.
In the aquarium, hobbyist sources report it takes live and frozen meaty foods readily — bloodworm and earthworm are specifically noted as accepted foods — and, like other bichirs, it should be fed after lights-out or with food placed directly within reach, since its poor eyesight and deliberate hunting style leave it easily outcompeted by faster, sighted tankmates at normal feeding times.
Mating
Bichir reproduction is uniform across the family, and nothing in the available sources suggests P. mokelembembe differs: fertilisation is external, achieved through a distinctive courtship rather than simple broadcast spawning. The male cups his thickened, muscular anal and pelvic fins together into a shallow pouch, and the female releases a few small, adhesive eggs at a time into that cradle, where the male fertilises them before they are scattered onto plants, wood and the substrate. The sequence repeats many times over the course of a spawning bout.
As in other Polypterus, the clearest sign of sex is that same spawning equipment: males carry a broader, thicker anal fin than females, which is otherwise the family's chief mark of sexual dimorphism. No courtship territory or pair bond is described beyond the act of spawning itself.
Breeding
Following the pattern of the genus, the small adhesive eggs are simply scattered among plants and leaf litter with no parental care afterward — adults are opportunistic predators and will eat both eggs and fry if given the chance. Eggs are expected to hatch within a few days into larvae bearing feathery external gills behind the head, an ancient larval feature shared across the family, absorbed as the young fish grow.
In practice, breeding this species is essentially undocumented in the aquarium: none of the available sources report a captive spawning, and FishBase notes plainly that the trade supply is wild-caught only and very rarely exported. Unlike the widely farmed Senegal bichir, P. mokelembembe has not been established as a captive-bred aquarium fish, and anyone keeping it should assume every specimen available has come straight from a Congo blackwater stream.
In the aquarium
P. mokelembembe is described by aquarium sources as hardy and adaptable once settled, but it is still a specialist blackwater fish at heart, and it does best in soft, distinctly acidic water that echoes its native tannin-stained streams — dim lighting, driftwood, leaf litter and shaded hiding places all suit its shy, nocturnal habits, and it is reported to appreciate cover it can retreat to during the day. Its modest adult size makes it one of the more manageable bichirs for a dedicated species or Congo-blackwater tank, though it still needs a tank with generous floor space and a soft sand substrate it can rest and forage on.
Two cautions apply as strongly here as to any bichir. First, the lid: bichirs are notorious escape artists, and a fish found dried out on the floor is the most common way keepers lose them, so the tank must be tightly and completely covered while still leaving an air gap at the surface for the fish to breathe. Second, tankmates: this is a predator that will swallow anything small enough to fit in its mouth, so companions need to be too large to eat and calm enough not to out-compete a slow, smell-hunting nocturnal feeder. Given its rarity and wild-caught status, it remains more a collector's fish than a mainstream one — seldom seen in shops and priced accordingly when it is.
Conservation
Polypterus mokelembembe is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, an assessment dated 2009. As a Congo basin blackwater endemic described only in 2006, it has not been the subject of the kind of detailed population monitoring given to better-known fishes, and the available sources do not report a specific threat to the species.
Its blackwater creek habitat in the central Congo basin sits within a broader landscape facing pressures common to Congo basin freshwater systems generally — deforestation, artisanal mining and habitat disturbance — though nothing in the cited sources ties a documented decline to this species specifically. Because it is essentially unavailable as a captive-bred fish, any demand from the aquarium trade draws directly on wild populations, even though current volumes are reported as very low.
