Cryptomyrus ogoouensis is a small, dimly coloured, weakly electric fish known from a single river system in Gabon — and one of the more striking ichthyological discoveries of the last decade. Described only in 2016, it belongs to Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids of the ancient bonytongue order Osteoglossiformes, whose living members carry a distinctive toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a toothed patch on the roof of the mouth, a legacy of one of the oldest surviving branches of the teleost fishes. Cryptomyrus ogoouensis and its sole congener, C. ona, were carved out as an entirely new genus — an unrecognised lineage hiding within the Lower Guinea mormyrid fauna of the Ogooué basin, distinct from the outwardly similar mormyrids of the neighbouring Congo system. It is not a fish anyone is likely to meet in a shop: it has no established common name, no documented history in the aquarium trade, and almost everything known about it comes from the taxonomic paper that named it.

Taxonomy & naming

Cryptomyrus ogoouensis was described in 2016 by Jacob Sullivan, Sébastien Lavoué and Carl Hopkins in ZooKeys, as one of two new species placed in the newly erected genus Cryptomyrus (the other being C. ona). The description drew on molecular and morphological evidence showing that the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province of Gabon held its own distinct mormyrid lineage that had gone unrecognised — separate from the superficially similar mormyrids of the Congo basin farther east. Family Mormyridae sits within Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, among the oldest living lineages of teleost fish: a deep-time radiation now scattered, relict-like, across South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia. The order's name and its defining feature come from a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that occludes against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth — the "bony tongue" shared, in modified forms, by arowanas, arapaima, African butterflyfish, featherback knifefishes and the mormyrids alike.

The genus name Cryptomyrus combines the Greek krypto- ("hidden, concealed") with myrus, a root shared with Mormyrus, the type genus of the family — the name is effectively a description of the fish's discovery, a mormyrid lineage that had stayed hidden from science. The species epithet ogoouensis is a modern Latin place-name, "of the Ogooué", after the Ogooué (also spelled Ogowe) River in Gabon, the only basin from which the species is known. Because C. ogoouensis was described from a limited series of specimens and has not been the subject of any published follow-up study, its diagnosis rests on a small set of technical characters — including an anal-fin origin set well forward of the dorsal fin, a narrow caudal peduncle, and caudal-fin lobes nearly as long as the peduncle itself — that separate it from its only congener, C. ona.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum size of about 4.4 in standard length for Cryptomyrus ogoouensis, making it a small mormyrid even by the modest standards of the family. Like every member of Mormyridae, it carries a weak electric organ near the base of the tail, built from modified muscle cells (electrocytes), driven by an enlarged electromotor region of the spinal cord and read by an equally enlarged cerebellum — mormyrids as a family are known for having among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, a "thinking fish" reputation earned largely by the well-studied elephantnose, Gnathonemus petersii, and shared to varying degrees across the family.

The original description separates C. ogoouensis from its only congener by fin position and body proportions rather than by colour pattern or an obvious external ornament such as the trunk-like chin appendage (the schnauzenorgan) that makes some mormyrid relatives instantly recognisable. Whether C. ogoouensis carries any comparable chin projection, and what its live colouration looks like, are not detailed in the sources available for this account — data sparse. As in other mormyrids, individual species can be difficult to tell apart on external appearance alone; confident identification in this genus, as in many Mormyridae, ultimately rests on the shape of the species-specific electric organ discharge (EOD) rather than on colour or pattern.

Habitat

Cryptomyrus ogoouensis is endemic to the Ogooué (Ogowe) River basin of Gabon, in west-central Africa, with records from the vicinity of Doumé Falls. This places it a considerable distance from the much better-collected mormyrid fauna of the Congo basin to the east; the discovery of the genus Cryptomyrus was itself evidence that the smaller, less-studied Ogooué system holds its own distinct, previously unrecognised mormyrid lineage rather than simply hosting outlying populations of Congolese species.

FishBase records the species from freshwater, benthopelagic habitat — that is, living and foraging low over the riverbed rather than in open midwater — in soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral water (pH around 6.9) at a warm 81 °F. Finer habitat detail (riffle versus still water, substrate, canopy cover) is not given in the available sources, but the general pattern across small Lower Guinea mormyrids is a life spent foraging over sand, leaf litter and submerged wood in dim, often tannin-tinted forest rivers and streams, where a weak electric sense substitutes for eyes that are of limited use in turbid or shaded water.

Feeding

No dedicated feeding study of Cryptomyrus ogoouensis has been published, so its wild diet is inferred rather than documented. Like other small benthic mormyrids, it almost certainly forages over the riverbed for aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — locating prey in dark or turbid water using its weak electric field rather than vision, in the manner of its far better-studied relative Gnathonemus petersii, which probes sediment with an electroreceptor-packed chin appendage.

Because the species has essentially no aquarium history, there is no first-hand feeding record to draw on for it specifically. General mormyrid husbandry calls for live or frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp and similar — offered as the lights dim, since these fish are nocturnal, electrosensitive foragers that tend to lose out to faster, sighted tankmates in a brightly lit, busy aquarium. There is no reason to expect C. ogoouensis to differ from this general mormyrid pattern, but that remains an extrapolation from the family rather than a documented fact about the species itself.

Mating

Nothing specific has been published on the courtship or mate-recognition behaviour of Cryptomyrus ogoouensis. What is known comes from the wider study of mormyrids: each fish's pulse-type electric organ discharge is individually and species-specific, and it is thought to function in courtship and species recognition as much as in electrolocation — a fish effectively "listens" to a potential mate's discharge waveform, much as another animal might attend to a call or song. Because C. ogoouensis was described only in 2016 from a small series of museum specimens, no field or captive observations of its EOD-mediated courtship, sex differences, or spawning behaviour have been reported.

In the wild, mormyrids as a group are seasonal spawners whose reproduction is tied to the flood cycle of their home river; rising water levels, and the associated changes in flow, turbidity and temperature, are thought to act as a trigger, though the precise cues remain poorly understood even in well-studied species. There is no evidence that C. ogoouensis departs from this general pattern, but there is also no confirmation that it follows it — the species' reproductive ecology is effectively unstudied.

Breeding

As with the great majority of mormyrids, Cryptomyrus ogoouensis has — so far as the available record shows — never been bred in captivity, and its reproductive biology in the wild is essentially unknown beyond the general seasonal, flood-triggered pattern typical of the family. Mormyrid breeding remains one of the more stubbornly unsolved problems in the freshwater aquarium hobby: even the handful of species that reach the trade regularly, such as Gnathonemus petersii, are almost never spawned by hobbyists, and the specific cues, courtship sequence and egg-laying behaviour of most species — this one included — are simply not documented.

In some better-studied mormyrids, adults are thought to scatter adhesive eggs among submerged plants or root tangles in flooded margins during the rainy season, with little or no ongoing parental care once spawning is complete, but whether this applies to Cryptomyrus ogoouensis is not known. Given the complete absence of captive-breeding records or targeted field studies, any statement about how this species reproduces beyond "seasonal, flood-associated spawning" would be guesswork rather than documented fact.

In the aquarium

Cryptomyrus ogoouensis is not an established aquarium fish. It has no common name, no documented history in the ornamental trade, and — to the extent the available sources show — has never been kept or bred by hobbyists. Any care guidance here is therefore an extrapolation from the general needs of small, similarly sized African mormyrids rather than a record of what has actually worked for this species specifically.

By that general mormyrid template, a fish like this would want a dimly lit tank with abundant cover — driftwood, root tangles, smooth ceramic or PVC tubes — over a soft substrate that will not abrade its sensitive skin and electroreceptive surfaces, plus scrupulously stable, clean water; mormyrids as a group are notoriously sensitive to poor water quality and to some medications, including copper-based treatments, and should be dosed conservatively if treatment is ever needed. Mormyrids also have a reputation for aggression toward their own species and toward other mormyrids in tight quarters, so a lone specimen, or a carefully managed group in a spacious tank with plenty of visual barriers, is the safer approach; sudden nets, bright light and rough handling are all significant stressors. On the size side there is at least no size trap here — at roughly 4.4 in standard length, Cryptomyrus ogoouensis is small compared with size-trap relatives such as the elephantnose or the giant arowanas and arapaima of this order — but given the total lack of an aquarium track record, this remains a species to admire in the scientific literature rather than one to plan a tank around.

Conservation

Cryptomyrus ogoouensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (Not Evaluated) and carries no CITES listing. It was described only in 2016, is known only from the Ogooué basin of Gabon (with records near Doumé Falls), and has not been the subject of any dedicated conservation assessment.

An unassessed status is not the same as a clean bill of health: as with many recently described, narrow-range fishes of Central and West Africa, the absence of an IUCN evaluation mostly reflects how little targeted survey work has been done, not evidence that the species is secure. Its entire known range lies within a single river system, which is the kind of distribution that, in better-studied relatives, often correlates with heightened vulnerability to localised pressures such as damming, deforestation-driven sedimentation and water-quality decline — but for Cryptomyrus ogoouensis itself, the honest answer is that its conservation status is essentially unknown pending further fieldwork.
