Taxonomy & naming
Cyphomyrus lufirae was described in 2020 by Mulelenu, Katemo Manda, Decru, Chocha Manda & Vreven in the Journal of Fish Biology, one of the more recent additions to the mormyrids — the weakly electric elephantfishes of Africa. It belongs to the order Osteoglossiformes, among the oldest surviving lineages of the teleost fishes and named for the bony, toothed structure on the tongue that bites against toothplates on the roof of the mouth; within that ancient order it sits in the family Mormyridae and the genus Cyphomyrus.
The species is separated from its Cyphomyrus relatives chiefly on meristic and morphometric grounds: a comparatively low dorsal-fin ray count (27–32 rays) and an unusually large prepelvic distance (41.0–43.8% of standard length). The type series — holotype and paratypes — was collected from the Middle Lufira River, both upstream and downstream of Kyubo Falls, and from the Luvilombo River, a left-bank tributary; the specific epithet lufirae simply Latinizes the river's name, tying the fish to the single basin where it is currently known.
Morphology
Like other Cyphomyrus and mormyrids generally, C. lufirae has the family's unmistakable silhouette: a laterally compressed body, a small mouth set well forward on a blunt to gently domed head, and a dorsal fin placed far back on the body opposite an elongate anal fin, the two working almost like a matched pair of sculling oars. The caudal peduncle is slender and, as in all mormyrids, houses the electric organ used for electrolocation and communication (see 'Feeding' and 'Mating').
Published measurements come from the type series rather than from long-term observation of living fish: the holotype and paratypes range roughly 2.8–3.58 in in standard length, making C. lufirae a small mormyrid even by the modest standards of the genus. Colour in life has not been described in detail in the available literature — mormyrids in general show a fairly uniform grey to blackish-brown body, sometimes with a paler saddle or band near the caudal peduncle, but whether C. lufirae follows that pattern is not documented; data sparse.
Habitat
Cyphomyrus lufirae is, as far as is currently known, endemic to a single river system: the Lufira, a major tributary that feeds the Upper Lualaba — the uppermost stretch of what becomes the Congo River — in Haut-Katanga province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. It has been recorded from the Middle Lufira around Kyubo Falls and from the Luvilombo, one of the river's left-bank tributaries.
The Lufira, like much of the Congo basin, runs dark and tannin-stained, coloured by dissolved organic matter from the surrounding vegetation, with water that is soft and only slightly acidic to neutral (roughly pH 6.9–7.2) and warm year-round, in the region of 75–82 °F. That dim, sediment- and tannin-laden water is exactly the setting where a weak electric sense earns its keep: visibility is poor, and a mormyrid builds a picture of its surroundings by electrolocation rather than by sight.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study has been published for C. lufirae, but its biology can be inferred with reasonable confidence from its family. Mormyrids are nocturnal, largely solitary foragers that hunt over soft river-bottom sediment, using their electric organ to build a real-time electrical picture of their surroundings — an ability made possible by one of the highest brain-to-body-mass ratios of any fish, driven by a greatly enlarged cerebellum devoted to processing the electrosensory signal. Related Cyphomyrus and other Congo-basin mormyrids feed mainly on benthic invertebrates: insect larvae (including chironomid 'bloodworms'), small crustaceans and other soft-bodied prey picked out of the substrate.
There is no reason to expect C. lufirae to depart from that general pattern, but — like much else about the species — its actual diet in the Lufira has not been documented; data sparse.
Mating
Courtship and species recognition in mormyrids is thought to run largely through the electric organ discharge (EOD): each species, and often each sex, produces a distinctive pulse-type discharge, and studies in other mormyrids show fish can distinguish and respond to species-typical discharge patterns. It is a widely cited mechanism for how mormyrids locate and recognise the right mate in dark, low-visibility water, though the specific EOD and courtship behaviour of C. lufirae itself has not been recorded or published — it is inferred from the family rather than observed directly in this species.
Like other mormyrids, C. lufirae is presumed to be a seasonal spawner tied to the basin's flood cycle, when rising water opens up flooded margins and vegetation that may serve as spawning and nursery habitat. Beyond that general pattern, nothing specific to this species — timing, display, or egg-laying behaviour — has been described.
Breeding
Breeding in mormyrids generally is poorly understood and only rarely achieved in captivity, and C. lufirae is no exception — if anything more so, since it is known only from a handful of museum type specimens and has not been reported from the aquarium trade at all. Wild mormyrids are thought to be seasonal, flood-triggered spawners, and there is some evidence in other species that adults may guard eggs or fry among vegetation, but reproductive details for most mormyrid species, this one included, remain sparse.
There is no record of captive spawning for C. lufirae and no established protocol exists. A few other African mormyrids — some West African Mormyrus and Campylomormyrus — have occasionally been bred by specialist keepers under carefully managed conditions, but nothing comparable has been attempted or reported for this species.
In the aquarium
Cyphomyrus lufirae has not, as far as published records show, ever appeared in the aquarium trade. It was described only in 2020 from a narrow stretch of a single DRC river system, and there is no evidence it has been collected for the hobby. Any aquarium guidance here is necessarily drawn from the genus and family rather than from direct experience with this species, and should be read with that caveat.
Mormyrids as a group are demanding, specialist fish rather than casual community additions. They want dim lighting, a soft substrate they can probe, plenty of cover (driftwood, caves, dense planting) to retreat into by day, and scrupulously clean, stable, well-filtered water — they are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to some medications, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and conservatively. Strong electrical fields from aquarium equipment can also interfere with a mormyrid's electric sense, which is worth bearing in mind with heater and pump placement. Most species, including presumably this one, do best alone or in a carefully matched group of their own kind rather than mixed with boisterous tankmates, since mormyrids can be territorial toward their own kind and are easily outcompeted for food by faster fish.
Conservation
Cyphomyrus lufirae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List — as a species described only in 2020, it currently carries no formal conservation status (Not Evaluated). That is common for very recently described African freshwater fishes, particularly narrow-range endemics from less-studied river systems, where taxonomic description tends to run well ahead of any dedicated conservation assessment.
What is clear from the description itself is that C. lufirae is, at present, known only from the Lufira River and one tributary in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — a genuinely narrow range by any measure. Single-basin endemics of that kind are inherently more exposed to localised pressures such as mining runoff, damming, or sedimentation than widely distributed species, even before a formal Red List assessment weighs in; the absence of a status reflects a data gap rather than evidence that the species is secure.
