Gnathonemus longibarbis is a large, little-known East African mormyrid — a weakly electric fish in Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleost fish, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth. Described by Franz Hilgendorf in 1888 as a species of Mormyrus and later placed in the elephantnose genus Gnathonemus, it carries the family's signature toolkit: a tail-mounted electric organ that fires a continuous train of weak pulses for electrolocation and communication, and — as its name announces — an unusually long, fleshy chin barbel used to probe the bottom for buried prey. Reaching some 36 cm, it is a genuinely large mormyrid, and an unusual one geographically: it turns up across two separate East African rift-lake systems, Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika and their tributary rivers, rather than the Congo or West African basins most Gnathonemus call home. It is rarely seen in the aquarium trade and, like most mormyrids, is essentially unbred in captivity — a specialist fish for specialist keepers.

Taxonomy & naming

Gnathonemus longibarbis was described by the German naturalist Franz Hilgendorf in 1888, originally as Mormyrus longibarbis; it was later transferred to Gnathonemus, the genus of elephantnoses within the family Mormyridae. Mormyridae itself sits in the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — among the oldest surviving branches of the teleost fishes, a group scattered by deep time across South America, Africa, Asia and Australasia and united by a toothed basihyal, a bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth. The Catalog of Fishes lists Gnathonemus longibarbis (Hilgendorf, 1888) as the currently valid name.

The genus name Gnathonemus derives from the Greek gnathos, "jaw", and nema, "thread", a nod to the thread-like or elongated chin process many species in the genus carry — most famously the trunk-like schnauzenorgan of the well-known aquarium elephantnose, Gnathonemus petersii. The species epithet longibarbis is Latin, from longus ("long") and barba ("beard" or "barbel"), and describes the unusually long chin barbel that gives this species its common point of identification and its name.

Morphology

Like other mormyrids, Gnathonemus longibarbis has a laterally compressed body, a small mouth, small eyes, a single dorsal fin set well back toward the tail, and a weakly forked caudal fin. Its defining external feature is the elongated, fleshy chin barbel for which it is named — a mobile, sensory-rich appendage, densely packed with electroreceptors and mechanoreceptors, that the fish sweeps over the substrate to locate buried invertebrates in the dark or in turbid water. FishBase records a maximum length of about 14.2 in total length, with the hobby reference Aquaportail citing an overlapping 11.8–15.7 in range (roughly 14.2 in standard length on average) — figures that mark this out as a genuinely large mormyrid, well beyond the pocket-sized Pollimyrus or Marcusenius species sometimes sold as "baby elephantnoses."

As in all mormyrids, an electric organ sits in the caudal peduncle near the tail, generating a continuous, low-voltage, pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD) whose waveform is thought to be species- and even individual-specific. This signal is read by an electroreceptive skin system and processed by a proportionally enormous cerebellum — mormyrids have among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, a fact that has earned the family a reputation as unusually intelligent, sensorily sophisticated animals. Detailed field descriptions of this particular species' coloration are sparse; like many of its relatives it is presumed to show the typical grey-brown to blackish mormyrid body tone, but a confident, sourced colour account for G. longibarbis specifically is not available.

Habitat

Gnathonemus longibarbis has an unusual East African range spanning two separate rift-lake drainage systems: FishBase records it from the Lake Victoria and Lake Kyoga basins and their associated rivers (the Victoria Nile and the Middle Akagera), and separately from the Lake Tanganyika basin via the Malagarazi River. The IUCN Red List lists it from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya and Tanzania, in freshwater habitats spanning rivers, lakes, marshes and inland deltas. A single mormyrid species holding on in two of Africa's Great Lakes, rather than one river system, is a notable pattern, though the underlying reasons are not detailed in the available sources.

Within these waters it is a freshwater demersal species, recorded among beds of water lilies and in shallow inshore water over sandy and rocky shores — but also, more surprisingly for a shallow-margin genus, at depths of 89–148 ft in open lake water (FishBase). That range, from sunlit shallows to the near-total darkness of the lake floor, fits a fish whose electric sense lets it navigate and forage regardless of light.

Feeding

Gnathonemus longibarbis is a carnivore. Aquaportail lists its diet as large dragonfly nymphs, insects and their larvae, other arthropods, fish eggs and worms — invertebrate prey typical of soft lake-bed and river-margin substrates. As in other mormyrids, foraging is thought to rely heavily on the long chin barbel and the electric sense working together: the barbel physically probes sediment and vegetation for hidden prey while the electric organ discharge helps detect the small distortions living prey and buried objects create in the fish's self-generated field, particularly useful for a species that is active mostly after dark.

In the aquarium it needs meaty live and frozen foods — bloodworm, mysis, chopped prawn, insect larvae, earthworms — and is usually reluctant to take dry or flake food. Because it is largely nocturnal, feeding is best offered after the lights go out, both to match its natural rhythm and to keep faster, more diurnal tankmates from stripping the food before it can find it.

Mating

As in other mormyrids, courtship and species recognition in Gnathonemus longibarbis are believed to be mediated at least partly by the electric organ discharge: the pulse shape and repetition rate of the EOD are species-specific and can vary between individuals, and related Mormyridae are known to modulate their discharge during social and courtship interactions. Whether this holds in the same detail for G. longibarbis specifically has not been documented — the species has drawn very little dedicated research attention.

Wild mormyrids in general are typically seasonal spawners, with reproduction cued to the rains and the seasonal flooding of rivers and marginal marsh habitat, which provides cover and food for developing young. No published account describes courtship behaviour, pair formation or spawning-site choice in Gnathonemus longibarbis specifically; data on this side of its biology is sparse.

Breeding

Gnathonemus longibarbis is oviparous, but breeding is essentially unaccomplished in captivity. Aquaportail — one of the few sources to address husbandry of this species at all — states plainly that reproduction is "barely feasible" in the aquarium, and no established captive-spawning protocol exists in the hobby literature. This mirrors the wider pattern in Mormyridae: most species are seasonal, flood-triggered spawners whose courtship and nest or egg-laying behaviour are poorly studied even in well-known aquarium species, let alone a rarely-kept lake endemic like this one.

Because captive breeding is not a realistic prospect, virtually every specimen that reaches the aquarium trade is wild-caught. Keepers should not expect to breed this fish, and should treat any stock on offer as taken from wild Lake Victoria or Lake Tanganyika populations rather than tank-raised — a point that carries real weight given the pressures those populations already face (see Conservation).

In the aquarium

This is not a beginner's fish. Aquaportail rates its care as complicated to expert-level and recommends a tank of at least 211 US gal for an adult approaching 14.2–15.7 in — a genuine size trap for anyone picturing a compact "elephantnose." Water should be kept warm and stable at roughly 73–81 °F, neutral to distinctly alkaline (pH 7.5–8.5) and moderately to fairly hard (10–25 °dGH), reflecting its Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika origins rather than the soft, acidic blackwater associated with many Congo-basin mormyrids. Provide a soft sand substrate to protect the sensitive chin barbel, subdued lighting, and plenty of cover such as roots, rockwork and broad-leaved plants or floating cover to soften the light further.

As with many mormyrids, individuals can be territorial and intolerant of their own species, so this is generally a fish to keep singly, or in a group only in a genuinely large tank with abundant visual barriers to break up sightlines. Mormyrids are also notably sensitive to poor water quality and to copper-based and some other medications, so treatments should be dosed conservatively and copper-based products avoided outright. Given a correctly sized, well-matured tank, Aquaportail cites a lifespan of 10–12 years — a long-term commitment for a fish that, realistically, will spend much of its life out of sight, foraging after dark.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Gnathonemus longibarbis as Least Concern, reflecting a range that spans multiple river and lake systems across Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya and Tanzania. At the scale of its full range the species is not currently considered threatened.

That headline status sits alongside a more troubling local detail: Aquaportail notes that the species has become rare in Lake Victoria specifically following the introduction of the Nile perch, a predator whose mid-20th-century establishment in the lake is well documented as one of the most severe freshwater ecological disruptions on record, driving major declines and extinctions among Lake Victoria's native fish fauna. Because this species straddles two lake basins, its Lake Tanganyika population may be faring differently than its Lake Victoria population — a distinction the current Least Concern assessment, being range-wide, does not resolve.
