Hippopotamyrus aelsbroecki is a small, little-known mormyrid from the Congo basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a member of the elephantnose family Mormyridae within Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, one of the oldest surviving branches of the ray-finned fishes. Like its relatives it is weakly electric, carrying a tail-mounted electric organ that fires a pulse-type discharge for electrolocation and communication in dark, turbid Congo river water. At a modest maximum recorded length of roughly 8.6 cm it is one of the more compact mormyrids, but it is also one of the least documented: the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, and it is essentially absent from the aquarium trade and from captive-breeding accounts.

Taxonomy & naming

Hippopotamyrus aelsbroecki was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1945, based on material from the Congo basin in what was then the Belgian Congo. It sits in the family Mormyridae — the elephantfishes — within the subfamily Mormyrinae, part of the order Osteoglossiformes, the ancient bonytongue lineage named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a matching plate on the roof. ITIS records it as a currently valid taxon (TSN 649839).

The genus Hippopotamyrus was erected by Pappenheim in 1906; the name combines Greek hippopotamos ("river horse", i.e. hippopotamus) with the common mormyrid genus-suffix -myrus, and refers to the genus's distinctive lower median teeth, which are broad and chisel-like in a way early taxonomists likened to a hippopotamus's jaw — a character still used to separate Hippopotamyrus from superficially similar mormyrid genera. The species epithet aelsbroecki is a patronym honoring R. P. Van Aelsbroeck of the Musée du Congo Belge (Tervuren, Belgium), who collected the holotype. Mormyrid taxonomy leans heavily on dentition, fin position and the shape of the species-specific electric organ discharge (EOD) rather than on colour pattern, since many species look alike; confident field identification of a Hippopotamyrus without those characters is not reliable.

Morphology

Hippopotamyrus aelsbroecki has the generalised mormyrid body plan: an elongate, laterally compressed body, a small, subterminal mouth suited to picking food from the substrate, a short-based dorsal fin set well back over the body and mirrored by an anal fin of similar span, and a small, deeply forked caudal fin. The eyes are small, in keeping with a fish that relies more on electrosense than vision in the dim, sediment-laden water it inhabits. Reported maximum size is only about 3.4 in total length, making this one of the smaller members of a family that includes species reaching 11.8 in or more.

As in other mormyrids, a specialised electric organ sits in the caudal peduncle just ahead of the tail, generating a low-voltage, species-specific pulse discharge; a greatly enlarged cerebellum processes the returning signal, and mormyrids as a group are noted for having among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish. Colouration in Hippopotamyrus is generally a plain brownish-grey to olive, without the bold pattern seen in many aquarium fish — camouflage matters less to a fish that "sees" its surroundings electrically. The distinctive lower median teeth that give the genus its name are a key identification character but are not something an aquarist can casually assess.

Habitat

This species is known from the Congo basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with records spanning Shaba (the former name for Katanga province, in the southeast) and the lower Congo River; the fine detail of its distribution across that range is not well resolved, which is part of why the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient rather than assessing a specific threat category.

The Congo basin's rivers and floodplains are classically warm, soft and acidic to neutral, often heavily stained with tannins or carrying fine suspended sediment that keeps visibility low — precisely the kind of water in which an electrosense evolved to matter more than eyesight. Specific temperature and pH readings have not been published for this species, but it can be expected to share the broad conditions typical of Congo basin mormyrids: warm water in roughly the mid-20s °C and soft, slightly acidic chemistry, in structurally complex habitat with submerged wood, roots and marginal vegetation offering cover.

Feeding

Like other small Mormyridae, Hippopotamyrus aelsbroecki is presumed to be a benthic invertivore, probing soft substrate for aquatic insect larvae, small worms and other invertebrates. Mormyrids use their electric organ discharge to electrolocate prey buried in sediment or hidden in turbid water, allowing them to forage effectively after dark or in conditions where sight would be nearly useless; feeding activity in the group is typically nocturnal or crepuscular.

No species-specific feeding study exists for H. aelsbroecki, but the family's general husbandry literature is consistent: mormyrids in the aquarium do well on sinking live or frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, offered where the fish can find them by probing rather than by open-water hunting. They are not surface feeders and rarely compete well for food against faster fish in a mixed-diet free-for-all.

Mating

Courtship and mate recognition in mormyrids as a family are thought to run substantially through the electric organ discharge — each species produces a distinctive pulse waveform, and subtle modulation of that signal is implicated in species recognition, sex recognition and dominance interactions among fish sharing the same murky water. Beyond that general picture, nothing specific has been documented for Hippopotamyrus aelsbroecki: there is no published account of its courtship behaviour, spawning site choice, or seasonal timing.

More broadly, mormyrids are believed to be seasonal spawners cued to the rains and the resulting flood pulse across Congo basin floodplains, which would extend feeding and breeding habitat and likely trigger reproductive behaviour, as it does in many other African floodplain fish. That pattern is inferred from the family rather than confirmed for this species.

Breeding

Breeding biology in Hippopotamyrus aelsbroecki is essentially unknown, and this is not a gap unique to the species — captive breeding of mormyrids in general is rare and success is inconsistent even for the handful of larger, better-known elephantnoses kept widely in the hobby. No aquarium spawning of H. aelsbroecki has been documented, and the wild reproductive details — nest site if any, egg deposition, incubation, and any parental guarding — remain poorly known.

What little is understood about mormyrid reproduction generally suggests some species may guard eggs among submerged plants or root tangles after spawning, but whether that applies here has not been established. Prospective keepers should treat this species as effectively unbred in captivity rather than expect a reliable, repeatable protocol.

In the aquarium

Hippopotamyrus aelsbroecki is not an established aquarium fish; it is rarely if ever seen in the trade, and specific husbandry data for this exact species is sparse. What follows draws on general Mormyridae care, which should be treated as a starting point rather than a guarantee for this poorly known species. Mormyrids do best in a dimly lit tank with soft substrate, ample hiding places (driftwood, root tangles, PVC pipe sections or dense planting) and stable, clean, well-filtered water — they are sensitive to ammonia, nitrite and general water-quality swings, and their delicate skin makes them notably intolerant of copper-based medications and salt, so any treatment needs to be dosed conservatively and only when clearly necessary.

At a wild maximum around 3.4 in this species stays considerably more compact than many popular elephantnoses, which is a point in its favour if it were ever available, but it does not remove the other care demands of the family. Mormyrids can be territorial and sometimes aggressive toward their own kind, particularly in a tank too small to let individuals establish separate refuges, so tank size and hiding-place density matter as much as species choice; a single specimen or a well-spaced small group in a suitably large, sparsely stocked tank is the general recommendation for the family. Tankmates should be chosen for compatibility with dim lighting and calm water rather than for schooling with the mormyrid itself, since these fish are not shoaling, community-tank staples.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Hippopotamyrus aelsbroecki as Data Deficient — there is not enough information on its population size, trend, or the full extent of its range to assign a specific threat category. This is a common status for small, non-commercial Congo basin fish that receive little targeted survey effort outside broader ichthyological expeditions.

Data Deficient is not the same as "safe": the species' known range touches Katanga (formerly Shaba) province, an area under sustained mining-related development pressure, and the lower Congo River system, which faces its own combination of sedimentation, pollution and hydrological change. Without dedicated population surveys, though, any specific claim about decline or stability would be speculation rather than fact, and none is made here.
