Hippopotamyrus ansorgii, known in the trade as the slender stonebasher, is a small weakly electric fish from the mormyrid family (Mormyridae) — a lineage placed within Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the oldest surviving branches of the teleost fishes, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a toothed plate on the roof of the mouth. Described by George Albert Boulenger in 1905 from Angola, it belongs to a genus of southern African river specialists that use a weak electric organ in the tail to read the darkness of tannin-stained floodplain water — electrolocating obstacles and prey and, almost certainly, communicating with one another — rather than relying on the eyes. Modest in size (to roughly 15 cm), it is honestly one of the least-understood of the mormyrids, and recent taxonomic work suggests that what has long been called Hippopotamyrus ansorgii is actually a complex of closely related, geographically separated populations rather than one uniform species.

Taxonomy & naming

Hippopotamyrus ansorgii was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1905, with a type locality given as "between Benguella and Bihé", Angola — probably within the Kwanza (Cuanza) River system. It sits in the family Mormyridae, the elephantfishes or mormyrids, within the order Osteoglossiformes: the bonytongues, an ancient, scattered radiation of freshwater fishes found today on four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) and united by a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a toothed plate on the roof — one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleost fish. Both the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) and the World Register of Marine Species treat Hippopotamyrus ansorgii (Boulenger, 1905) as a currently valid name.

Species-level taxonomy within Mormyridae is difficult because so many species look nearly identical externally and are properly distinguished only by their electric organ discharge (EOD) waveform, so genetic and bioacoustic work regularly reshuffles what were once treated as single, wide-ranging species. A 2010 study in the Journal of Natural History found that populations long lumped under the name Hippopotamyrus ansorgii actually form a species complex: the Cunene River population is distinct from the Angolan type population, and the upper Zambezi (Caprivi Strip) populations are well differentiated in turn. In practice this means the name "H. ansorgii" as used across its wide mapped range and in older literature may cover more than one true species — a caution worth carrying into any account of its biology.

The vernacular name "slender stonebasher" follows a pattern used for several small southern African mormyrids nicknamed "stonebashers", with "slender" distinguishing this species' more elongate build from stockier relatives. The genus name Hippopotamyrus combines the Greek hippopotamos ("river horse") with the mormyrid suffix "-myrus", shared with several other elephantfish genera and traceable to Mormyrus, the family's type genus; the epithet ansorgii honours the physician and naturalist William John Ansorge, a prolific early-1900s collector in Angola and elsewhere in Africa, consistent with the Angolan type locality.

Morphology

Like other members of its genus, Hippopotamyrus ansorgii has the classic small-mormyrid build: an elongate, laterally compressed body, a small terminal-to-subterminal mouth without the fleshy, worm-hunting chin appendage (the "schnauzenorgan") that marks some of its more famous relatives such as Gnathonemus petersii, a single long-based dorsal fin set well back on the body roughly opposite an equally long anal fin, and a deeply forked tail on a slender caudal peduncle. FishBase records 18–19 dorsal soft rays and 24–26 anal soft rays, fin-ray counts used alongside body proportions to separate it from superficially similar Hippopotamyrus and Marcusenius species sharing the same rivers.

Recorded maximum size is about 5.9 in standard length, making it one of the smaller mormyrids rather than a size-trap species. Detailed live coloration for this particular species is not well documented in the sources consulted, though mormyrids in general run from grey-brown to blackish, sometimes with a paler mid-body band or blotch. As in all mormyrids, the tail carries a dedicated electric organ, derived from modified muscle tissue, that fires a continuous, weak, species- and even population-specific pattern of electric pulses; receptor cells scattered over the skin read the resulting field, letting the fish "see" its surroundings, including prey and obstacles, by electrolocation even in complete darkness or turbid, tannin-stained water. Mormyrids as a family are also known for having among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, an enlarged cerebellum devoted largely to processing this electrosensory information.

Habitat

Hippopotamyrus ansorgii is a southern African river fish, recorded from the Cunene, Okavango and upper Zambezi systems and the Buzi and Pungwe rivers (roughly 11°S–21°S), from the Ruo River on the Malawi side of the lower Zambezi, from the Cuanza (Kwanza) River in Angola near the type locality, and from the Kwango River in the Congo basin — a wide but discontinuous spread across the drainages of Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Given the species-complex findings noted above, some of these far-flung populations may eventually be recognised as separate species in their own right.

It is a demersal freshwater fish, living and foraging over the riverbed rather than in open water. Southern African floodplain rivers of this kind are typically warm, soft and only lightly mineralised, often stained amber by dissolved tannins from surrounding vegetation and flooded forest, which cuts visibility sharply — precisely the low-light conditions in which a weak electric sense is most valuable. Species-specific water-chemistry data for H. ansorgii itself is sparse; the temperature and pH figures used for its care, below, are drawn from general Mormyridae husbandry experience rather than a measured profile of this exact species.

Feeding

Mormyrids such as Hippopotamyrus ansorgii forage along the riverbed, mostly around dusk and after dark, using electrolocation rather than eyesight to detect prey buried in mud or sand. The diet is broadly invertebrate: aquatic insect larvae (notably chironomid "bloodworms"), small crustaceans and worms picked out of the substrate one mouthful at a time.

In the aquarium it should be offered live or frozen protein foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, glassworm, chopped earthworm and similar — rather than flake or pellet diets, which mormyrids in general are slow to recognise as food. Feeding after dark, when the fish is naturally active, gets far better results than feeding in a brightly lit tank by day.

Mating

Mating behaviour in Hippopotamyrus ansorgii has not been studied in detail, and mormyrids as a group are notoriously poorly understood in this respect despite decades of laboratory work on their electric organs. What is known from the family points to seasonal, flood-triggered spawning: in the wild, rising water at the start of the rains appears to cue reproduction, likely timed with the flooding of marginal vegetation that both shelters eggs and supplies the invertebrate food young fish need.

The pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD) each mormyrid produces is thought to play a courtship and species-recognition role — since so many mormyrid species look nearly identical, the EOD may be the primary signal by which a fish distinguishes a compatible mate of its own kind from a similar-looking stranger — but the specific courtship sequence in H. ansorgii, from pairing through spawning, has not been documented and should be treated as essentially unknown.

Breeding

Hippopotamyrus ansorgii is essentially not bred in captivity; like the great majority of mormyrids it has no established aquarium spawning method, and reports of successful captive reproduction anywhere in the family are rare and largely anecdotal. Virtually all aquarium specimens are wild-caught rather than farmed.

What little is known of wild mormyrid breeding points to some form of parental investment beyond simple egg-scattering — a handful of species are thought to lay adhesive eggs among submerged plants or root mats and to guard them for a period — but this has not been confirmed for H. ansorgii specifically, and the data are sparse enough that no reliable breeding mode can be stated with confidence. Prospective keepers should not expect to breed this species and should assume any offered stock was collected from the wild.

In the aquarium

Hippopotamyrus ansorgii suits an experienced keeper willing to replicate soft, dim, tannin-tinted water rather than a bright, hard-water community tank. A fine sand substrate for foraging, driftwood and root-tangles for cover, subdued lighting, and botanicals such as leaf litter or alder cones to tint and soften the water all mirror its floodplain-river habitat. At roughly 5.9 in maximum it does not need the vast footprint a giant elephantnose or knifefish would demand, but it is still an active, wide-ranging forager that appreciates length of tank over height.

Mormyrids in general — and nothing in the sources available suggests this species is an exception — are sensitive to poor water quality, to sudden chemistry swings, and to many common medications, so stable, well-filtered water and conservative, careful dosing matter more than with a typical hardy community fish. They can also be intolerant of their own kind or of other mormyrids sharing a tank, sometimes sparring over territory and hierarchy, so a single specimen, or a genuinely large tank with very careful stocking, is the safer default rather than assuming a peaceful shoal. Given the species-complex issue noted in its taxonomy, a fish sold as "H. ansorgii" may not be perfectly identified to species — worth bearing in mind, not a cause for alarm.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Hippopotamyrus ansorgii as Least Concern. It is recorded across a broad span of southern African river systems — from the Cunene and Okavango through the upper and lower Zambezi to the Buzi, Pungwe and Kwango — and that geographic breadth is the main reason it is not currently considered at risk.

That wide range is itself made up of separate, only loosely connected populations, some of which recent taxonomic work suggests may be distinct species rather than one uniform one; a broad "Least Concern" verdict for the name as traditionally applied could therefore mask more localised pressures — damming and flow regulation, water abstraction for agriculture, and habitat degradation along stretches of the Okavango–Zambezi and Cunene systems — on any individual population once, or if, the complex is formally split.
