Hippopotamyrus wilverthi is a modest-sized, weakly electric mormyrid from the Congo basin, a member of the bonytongues (Osteoglossiformes) — among the oldest surviving lineages of teleost fish, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a toothed pad on the roof. Known chiefly from Pool Malebo (Stanley Pool), the wide, shallow stretch of the lower Congo River shared by Kinshasa and Brazzaville, it navigates and communicates in dim, tannin-stained water using a species-specific electric organ discharge rather than sight — the same sensory trick, entirely convergent, that separate lineages of fish reinvented independently across the world's rivers.

Taxonomy & naming

Hippopotamyrus wilverthi was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898, one of many Congo basin fishes he catalogued from specimens sent back during colonial-era collecting expeditions. It belongs to the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — among the oldest surviving lineages of teleost fish, a scattered radiation found today on four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) that shares almost nothing in common appearance despite the deep, shared ancestry. Within that order, Hippopotamyrus wilverthi sits in the family Mormyridae, the African weakly electric elephantnoses and mormyrids, and in the genus Hippopotamyrus, which currently holds around sixteen recognised species.

Some recent molecular work on mormyrid phylogeny has floated reshuffling parts of Hippopotamyrus into the genus Cyphomyrus; whether wilverthi specifically will end up reclassified there remains unsettled, and this account follows the name currently used by FishBase and the wider literature, Hippopotamyrus wilverthi. The genus name pairs "hippopotamus" — a nod to the large, slow rivers these fish share with the animal — with the "-myrus" root common to several mormyrid genus names, echoing the family name Mormyridae. The species epithet wilverthi honours Étienne Christophe Bernard Eugène Wilverth (1866–1916), a Belgian army officer who collected fish material from the Congo, including the specimens on which Boulenger based this species.

Morphology

Hippopotamyrus wilverthi reaches about 10.2 in in total length, modest by mormyrid standards. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, tapering to a slender caudal peduncle and a deeply forked tail; a single dorsal fin sits well back on the body, roughly opposite a long-based anal fin, a layout typical of the family. The mouth is small and set low, suited to picking invertebrates off the bottom rather than the elongated, trunk-like "schnauzenorgan" chin seen in some mormyrid relatives such as Gnathonemus petersii. Colouration is plain — grey to olive-brown over the body, paler below — and, like many of the roughly sixteen species in Hippopotamyrus, wilverthi is difficult to separate from close relatives on external appearance alone; researchers increasingly lean on the fish's own electric signal to confirm identity.

The feature that matters most about a mormyrid's anatomy sits out of sight. An electric organ built from modified muscle cells in the caudal peduncle generates a weak, species-specific electrical pulse — the electric organ discharge, or EOD — many times a second, broadcast into the surrounding water and picked up by electroreceptors scattered over the skin. To process that constant stream of electrosensory information, mormyrids carry a hugely enlarged cerebellum relative to body size, giving the family one of the highest brain-to-body-mass ratios of any fish and the popular tag of a "thinking fish." None of that shows up in a photograph, but it defines how the fish actually experiences its world.

Habitat

Hippopotamyrus wilverthi is a Congo basin fish, known chiefly from Pool Malebo (also called Stanley Pool), the wide, shallow, lake-like stretch where the lower Congo River spreads out between Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Brazzaville (Republic of the Congo) before narrowing into the river's final cataracts. Pool Malebo covers roughly 311 mi² but is shallow throughout, generally 10–33 ft deep, with slow current and extensive floodplain margins. Some distribution records also extend the species into the wider Congo basin as far as the Central African Republic, though the type locality and the bulk of documented records tie it to the Pool Malebo area; the precise range limits beyond that are not well resolved (data sparse).

The water here is soft and only mildly mineralised (roughly 150 µS/cm conductivity) and close to neutral, around pH 6.5–7.2, typical of the tannin-stained, sediment-laden rivers and floodplain backwaters that run through much of the Congo basin. Sunlight is filtered by turbidity and overhanging vegetation, leaving fish to navigate largely by touch and by their own electric field rather than by sight — exactly the dim, information-poor visual environment in which the weakly electric sense of the Mormyridae is thought to have evolved. Seasonal temperatures swing widely across the year, from roughly 17 up to 91 °F, though laboratory work on mormyrid electroreception has found the electric organ discharge to run most efficiently around 77–79 °F.

Feeding

In the wild, Hippopotamyrus wilverthi almost certainly feeds the way most mormyrids do: foraging over soft sediment after dark for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — locating prey more by its electric sense and touch than by sight, since Pool Malebo's turbid, tannin-stained water offers little to see by after sundown. The small, low-set mouth is built for close-range picking rather than for grasping large items.

In the aquarium it takes live and frozen invertebrate foods readily — bloodworm and brine shrimp are the staples reported for the species — and, like most mormyrids, feeds most confidently after the lights go down or under dim tank lighting, where it is not out-competed by faster diurnal tankmates. It does not adapt well to dry pellets alone; a diet centred on live or frozen invertebrate foods best matches its natural, nocturnal, sediment-probing feeding style.

Mating

Courtship and mate choice in mormyrids run largely through the electric channel that defines the family. Each species, and each individual, produces a distinctive electric organ discharge, and in several better-studied mormyrids that signal is known to carry information used in species recognition and courtship — males and females can apparently distinguish potential mates, and assess condition, partly by "listening" to each other's EOD. Whether Hippopotamyrus wilverthi uses its discharge in courtship the same way has not been specifically documented; the behaviour is inferred from better-studied relatives rather than confirmed for this species (data sparse).

What is documented is that wild mormyrids, this species included, are seasonal spawners tied to the rains and to the annual flood pulse of Congo basin rivers, when rising water opens up flooded margins and vegetation that may serve as spawning and nursery habitat. Beyond that broad pattern, the courtship and pairing behaviour of Hippopotamyrus wilverthi in the wild has not been closely studied, and no detailed account of pair formation or spawning behaviour for the species could be confirmed here.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Hippopotamyrus wilverthi is essentially unreported. Across the genus and the wider family, mormyrids are notoriously difficult to spawn in aquaria — the flood-triggered cues that appear to synchronise wild spawning are hard to replicate in a tank, and successful captive breeding of any Hippopotamyrus species is rare enough to be noteworthy when it happens. Aquarium supply of this species is understood to come from wild collection rather than any established captive-breeding programme.

What little is known of mormyrid reproduction generally suggests egg-scattering over vegetation or fine substrate in flooded margin habitat, with some species thought to show a degree of egg-guarding, but the details for wilverthi specifically have not been documented. Parental care, if any, is poorly known for this species, and prospective keepers should not expect to breed it as a matter of course.

In the aquarium

Documented aquarium experience with Hippopotamyrus wilverthi specifically is thin — much of the general mormyrid care advice available in the hobby press describes elephantnoses as a group rather than this species by name. What does carry across the family, and is reasonable to apply here, is dim lighting, a soft sediment substrate the fish can probe with its low-set mouth, and stable water chemistry close to its home range's Pool Malebo conditions: soft, only mildly mineralised water around neutral pH (roughly 6.5–7.2) and a steady temperature near 77–79 °F. Plenty of cover — driftwood, roots, plants — lets a naturally nocturnal, cover-seeking fish feel secure enough to come out and forage.

Mormyrids as a family are unusually sensitive aquarium fish: their electroreceptor-rich skin makes many species intolerant of copper-based medications and of salt, so any treatment needs to be chosen and dosed with particular care, and some keepers avoid strong magnetic-drive equipment near the tank on the theory that it may interfere with the fish's electric sense. Because Hippopotamyrus species are frequently confused with one another and are best told apart by their electric discharge rather than by eye, buyers should treat the identification on any wild-caught import with some caution. Temperament toward other H. wilverthi has not been specifically documented, but intraspecific aggression is common enough elsewhere in the genus that a new fish is best introduced watchfully rather than assumed to be sociable.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Hippopotamyrus wilverthi as Least Concern. It carries no CITES listing, and no specific aquarium-trade restrictions are noted for the species.

As with many mormyrids, the species is not a headline conservation concern in isolation, but its best-documented range is tied closely to the lower Congo River and Pool Malebo, an area under real pressure from the growth of Kinshasa and Brazzaville on its shores, along with the broader threats facing Congo basin freshwater systems — sedimentation, water-quality decline and habitat modification near two rapidly growing capital cities. The current Least Concern rating reflects the best available assessment rather than a guarantee that local populations near the Pool are immune to those pressures.
