Taxonomy & naming
Marcusenius kosi belongs to the family Mormyridae within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — a lineage that branched off extremely early in teleost fish evolution and takes its name from a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a toothed pad on the roof, in place of true jaw teeth. Marcusenius (Gill, 1862) is one of the largest mormyrid genera, spread across river and lake systems throughout sub-Saharan Africa, and its species are notoriously difficult to tell apart on external appearance alone.
The Kosi Lake System population was for a time flagged as a distinct but provisional or undescribed form before being formally distinguished from the geographically close Marcusenius pongolensis on morphological and genetic grounds, part of a broader wave of South African mormyrid taxonomy in the 2010s that also produced the Limpopo endemic Marcusenius krameri. Because this account was written without direct access to the primary description, no formal describer/year citation is given here — the taxonomic authority should be treated as unconfirmed pending that source. As in other mormyrids, the electric organ discharge (EOD) itself functions almost like a fingerprint and is used alongside morphology and genetics to separate look-alike species within the genus.
Morphology
Marcusenius kosi has the compact, laterally compressed build typical of small mormyrids: a short, blunt head, a small mouth, reduced eyes, and a body that tapers to a slender caudal peduncle housing the electric organ just ahead of the tail. The dorsal and anal fins sit far back on the body, roughly opposite one another, and the caudal fin is small and forked — the classic mormyrid silhouette that lets the fish hold a near-motionless posture in the water while it scans its surroundings electrically rather than visually.
Published length data specific to this narrow endemic are sparse. Close South African relatives in the same species complex are modest fish, commonly cited in the region of 3.9–5.9 in total length, and aquarium specimens of small Marcusenius species tend to run smaller still; that figure should be read as an estimate drawn from congeners rather than a confirmed record for M. kosi. Like other mormyrids, it carries a disproportionately large brain for its body size, with an enlarged cerebellum devoted to processing the constant stream of information from its electric sense — one of the highest brain-to-body-mass ratios recorded in any fish.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Kosi Lake System, a chain of shallow, sand-based coastal lakes — Lake Amanzimnyama, Mpungwini, Nhlange and Sifungwe — linked to the Indian Ocean by the Kosi Mouth estuary, on the Maputaland coastal plain of far northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is a landscape of swamp forest, raffia palms and coastal dune vegetation now protected within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. As is typical across much of this system, the water runs naturally dark and tea-coloured, stained by tannins leaching from the surrounding swamp-forest leaf litter, over sandy substrates rather than rock or mud.
SANBI's Red List assessment records an area of occupancy of only 12–15 mi² spread across five locations — an extremely small range for any freshwater fish — under pressure from a growing human population around the lakes, pollution and eutrophication, and invasive aquatic plants that alter the shallow habitat the fish depends on.
Feeding
As in other mormyrids, Marcusenius kosi is thought to forage mainly after dark, using its electric sense to locate small invertebrates hidden in sand and leaf litter rather than relying on its weak eyesight. Across the genus this typically means aquatic insect larvae (particularly chironomid midge larvae), small crustaceans and worms picked from the substrate.
No species-specific dietary study is available for M. kosi; the account above follows the well-documented pattern for small, benthic-foraging mormyrids in general rather than data collected on this species itself.
Mating
Courtship in mormyrids generally runs through the electric channel rather than sight or sound: each species — and often each sex — produces a distinct pulse-type electric organ discharge, and pairs are thought to use these signals for species and mate recognition, and possibly for dominance and courtship displays, in dark or turbid water where visual cues are of little use.
The mating behaviour of Marcusenius kosi itself has not been documented in the sources available for this account. Many African mormyrids are seasonal, rain- or flood-triggered spawners, and it is plausible that seasonal water-level change in the Kosi Lake System plays a similar cueing role here — but that is an inference from the wider family rather than a confirmed observation for this species. Breeding
Mormyrids as a group are essentially unbred in the aquarium hobby, and Marcusenius kosi is no exception — there is no record of captive spawning for this species, and even its wild breeding biology is poorly known. What little is understood of the family points to seasonal, flood-associated spawning, with the electric organ discharge playing some role in courtship, and some mormyrids are thought to scatter or deposit eggs among submerged vegetation with little further attention from either parent. The details for this genus, and for this species in particular, remain largely unrecorded.
Given the tiny range, Endangered status and near-total absence of husbandry information, any prospective breeder should treat this species as a conservation concern rather than a project fish, and should rely on documented close relatives for general technique rather than assume specifics that have not actually been observed in M. kosi.
In the aquarium
Marcusenius kosi is not an established aquarium fish. SANBI's assessment notes collection pressure from the ornamental trade, where Kosi system mormyrids are sometimes sold locally under the informal nickname "Little Dolphins" — a further stressor on a population already confined to barely 12–15 mi² of habitat, and a strong argument against buying wild-caught stock sourced from this system.
Where any small Marcusenius from tannin-stained African water is kept, general genus-level guidance applies: soft, dim, sediment-toned water, a sand substrate, and secure hiding places such as PVC pipe or driftwood caves reduce stress in a fish that reads its world electrically rather than visually. Mormyrids are usually poor candidates for a lone-specimen tank and do better in a same-species group in a roomy aquarium — elephantnoses of this scale in the trade are typically recommended tanks of 39.4 in/40 in or more — and they are sensitive to poor water quality and to some medications, so water stability and gentle dosing matter more than with hardier community fish. None of this is species-specific husbandry data for M. kosi, which essentially does not appear in the organised hobby.
Conservation
The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) assesses Marcusenius kosi as Endangered (EN) on its Red List of South African species, applying IUCN Red List criteria; the species does not yet have its own individual entry in the global IUCN Red List database. The assessment records an area of occupancy of only 12–15 mi² across five locations within the Kosi Lake System — a range small enough that a single pollution event or habitat change could affect a large share of the total population.
Documented threats include growth of the human population around the lakes, pollution and nutrient enrichment (eutrophication), and invasive aquatic plants altering the shallow, tannin-stained habitat the fish depends on; collection for the aquarium trade adds further pressure. The lakes sit within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which affords the system a degree of formal protection — but that has not been enough on its own to remove the extinction risk recorded for this narrow endemic.
