Marcusenius nyasensis is a weakly electric mormyrid described from Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa) and also recorded from the Zambezi basin, one of roughly 35 species in the largely African genus Marcusenius. Like every member of the bonytongues, order Osteoglossiformes — among the oldest surviving lineages of ray-finned fish, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a matching pad above — it carries an electric organ in the tail that fires a pulsed, species-specific discharge, used to electrolocate prey and to read the dark, sediment-laden water of its home lake and rivers. It is essentially unrecorded in the aquarium hobby: undocumented as a captive-bred fish, and much of its basic biology remains sparsely described in the available literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Marcusenius nyasensis was described in 1933 by the British limnologist Edgar Barton Worthington, who worked extensively on the East African Great Lakes, originally as Gnathonemus nyasensis before later authors moved it into the genus Marcusenius. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, an ancient lineage of ray-finned fish scattered by deep time across South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia. The genus Marcusenius itself holds around 35 recognised species across West, Central and East Africa, many of them difficult to separate on external appearance alone; taxonomists increasingly rely on the electric-organ discharge (EOD) waveform rather than colour or shape to tell similar species apart, a detail that has not been specifically studied for this species.

The epithet nyasensis refers to Lake Nyasa, the colonial-era and still-used alternate name for Lake Malawi, reflecting the species' type locality in that lake's drainage. Taxonomic records also flag an unresolved question about this species' relationship to the geographically overlapping Marcusenius livingstonii, another Lake Malawi-region mormyrid described by Boulenger a few years earlier; the exact nature of that relationship is not fully documented in the sources available here, so this account treats Marcusenius nyasensis as currently recognised rather than asserting a settled taxonomic picture.

Morphology

Marcusenius nyasensis has the build typical of the genus: a laterally compressed body, a small, downturned mouth suited to picking invertebrates off the bottom, and an elongated dorsal fin set opposite a similarly long anal fin, with a deeply forked tail. At the base of the tail sits the electric organ, a modified muscle mass that produces the fish's pulse-type discharge — the signal it uses both to electrolocate and, in mormyrids generally, to communicate with others of its kind.

No species-specific maximum length is reported in the available sources for Marcusenius nyasensis. Water in this region, and in the habitat generally favoured by mormyrids of this type, runs soft, slightly acidic to neutral and often tannin-stained, with reported temperatures of roughly 75–82 °F (optimal nearer 79–82 °F) and a pH around 6.5–7.4, typically closer to 6.8–7.2. This is dim, sediment- or tannin-darkened water where vision is of limited use and the electric sense does the work eyes cannot, whether reading the lake floor or the murk of a flooded tributary.

Feeding

Specific dietary studies for Marcusenius nyasensis are not available, but its build and habitat are consistent with the generalist, bottom-picking invertebrate diet reported across the genus: aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates taken from the substrate. As in other mormyrids, feeding is thought to be largely a nocturnal activity, with the fish relying on electrolocation — reading distortions in its own electric field — to find prey buried or hidden in dark water rather than hunting by sight.

Mormyrids as a group are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to many common medications, and are best kept in a stable, well-matured tank with minimal chemical intervention. They generally do poorly kept singly and should not be kept alone, though a lone individual with its own kind can become aggressive toward conspecifics in a tank that is too small; tankmates should be chosen carefully, since electric fish can be sensitive to disturbance from boisterous or fin-nipping species. Anyone considering this species should treat it as a specialist's fish rather than a community option, and should assume any specimen offered is wild-caught.
