Taxonomy & naming
Pantodon buchholzi was described by the German zoologist Wilhelm (Karl Hermann) Peters in 1876. It is the only species in the family Pantodontidae, which sits within Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, among the oldest surviving branches of the bony fishes (teleosts), united by a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against toothed plates on the roof. This is a genuinely deep-time lineage: it radiated across the continents long before they reached their present positions, and its living relict members are scattered today across South America (the arowanas and arapaima), Africa (the butterflyfish, the featherback knifefishes and the electric mormyrids), and Southeast Asia and Australasia (the Asian arowanas and saratogas). Millions of years of separate evolution divide these branches, but the family resemblance in body plan and biology traces back to that shared, ancient root.
The genus name Pantodon comes from the Greek pas/pantos ("all") and odous/odon ("tooth"), a reference to the fish's unusually extensive dentition — teeth are present not just on the jaws but scattered across the tongue, vomer and palate, an arrangement typical of the tongue-biting bonytongues generally and pronounced in this species. The epithet buchholzi honours Reinhold Buchholz, a German naturalist and collector active in Cameroon in the 1870s, whose material Peters used for the original description. With no close living relatives to compare it against, taxonomists still debate exactly where Pantodontidae sits among the early osteoglossiforms, but both FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes treat Pantodon buchholzi as the single valid species in a monotypic family.
Morphology
The African butterflyfish has a body built for one job: floating, motionless, at the surface. It is strongly flattened along the back, with a broad, upturned mouth, large eyes set high on the head, and a mottled olive-to-brown colour pattern that reads as a dead leaf drifting on the water — camouflage that works from above and below. Its most striking feature is the enormous, fan-like pectoral fins, which are held stiff and spread flat when the fish is resting at the surface, giving it a wing-shaped silhouette that inspired both its common name and an old nickname, "freshwater flying fish."
Maximum reported size is modest: around 4.7 in standard length, with aquarium-kept fish occasionally reaching up to about 5.9 in total length; most specimens seen in the hobby are smaller, in the 3.9–4.7 in range. The pelvic and anal fins sit far back on the body, and the tail is deeply forked with extended lower rays. Those big pectorals and the forceful tail beat behind them are also what let the fish launch clear of the water when startled or striking at prey; older accounts described this as true gliding flight, but closer study attributes the aerial escapes to a powerful leap rather than sustained gliding. Either way, it clears the surface with real force — enough that a loosely fitted aquarium lid is an open invitation for the fish to end up on the floor.
Habitat
Pantodon buchholzi is native to West and Central Africa, with a wide but patchy distribution recorded across the Niger basin and the Lake Chad drainage, Cameroon, the Ogooué basin of Gabon, the Congo basin, the upper Zambezi, the Ouémé basin in Benin, and the Jong River system in Sierra Leone. Across this range it occupies quiet, slow-moving or still water: forest creeks, swamps, floodplain lakes and calm backwaters and river margins, almost always where dense marginal or overhanging vegetation shelters the surface.
That still-water, heavily vegetated setting matters as much as the water chemistry: the butterflyfish is a surface ambush predator, and it needs a calm, undisturbed film of water and cover to hunt from and hide beneath. Typical water is soft, acidic to neutral, and warm, generally between 23 and 86 °F — reflecting the low-gradient forest drainages it inhabits rather than any single named lake or river system.
Feeding
This is a strict surface insectivore and ambush predator. In the wild it hangs just under the surface film and takes terrestrial insects that fall or land on the water — flies, moths, beetles, ants — along with surface-active aquatic invertebrates, striking upward with its large, oblique mouth. It essentially ignores food or activity anywhere below the top few centimetres of water.
In the aquarium it takes floating pellets and flakes readily once settled, and does best with some variety of live or fresh insect prey — crickets, flies, and similar foods — supplemented with frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp offered at the surface. Because it feeds exclusively at the top of the water column, it can be outcompeted by fast surface-feeding tankmates, and because its mouth easily engulfs anything bite-sized, it will just as readily eat small fish and fry that stray up to it. Feeding is really a tankmate-selection question as much as a diet question: give it floating or surface-delivered food and keep company it cannot swallow.
Mating
Courtship and fertilization in Pantodon buchholzi happen at the surface and are unusual for a fish of this kind: the male's anal fin is modified, with a thickened, adapted forward portion used during a brief close-contact embrace with the female, associated with a form of near-internal fertilization rather than the male simply broadcasting milt over eggs already in the water. This is one of the more distinctive reproductive behaviours documented in freshwater fish and is part of what makes captive breeding of the species notable rather than routine.
After this pairing contact, the female releases her eggs directly onto the surface rather than depositing them on a substrate or into a nest. No pair bond or brood-guarding behaviour follows; once the eggs are out, the adults take no further interest in them beyond the risk of eating them, which is the main reason egg-laying and fry-rearing are usually managed as separate, deliberate steps in the aquarium (see "Breeding").
Breeding
Pantodon buchholzi is a surface egg-scatterer: a conditioned pair releases buoyant, oil-droplet eggs directly onto the water's surface, often at a rate of upwards of a hundred eggs per day spread across several consecutive days rather than in a single clutch. The eggs float and are left completely unattended — there is no parental care of any kind, and both the parents and any tankmates will eat eggs on sight, so eggs (or the adults) need to be separated out promptly if fry are the goal.
Eggs hatch quickly, typically within about two days, and the fry are raised on infusoria followed by newly hatched brine shrimp and daphnia as they grow. Breeding tanks are generally set up soft and distinctly acidic — around pH 6.0–6.5 and 77–81 °F — with dim lighting, floating cover, and minimal surface disturbance, and are kept reasonably long and roomy (guides commonly cite a footprint on the order of 120 × 15 in/48 × 15 in) to give a spawning pair the calm surface area this species needs. It is bred in the hobby with some regularity by keepers who replicate these conditions, which makes it one of the more attainable captive-breeding projects among the true surface-dwelling bonytongues.
In the aquarium
A tight-fitting lid is not optional for this species — it is a committed jumper that will clear an open top the first time it is startled, and a butterflyfish out of water rarely survives long. Beyond that, its needs are shaped entirely by its surface-only lifestyle: give it a calm, spacious water surface with floating plants for cover, soft and acidic-to-neutral water in the low-to-mid 20s to high 20s °C, and dim, filtered lighting rather than bright open water. It largely ignores the mid and bottom of the tank, so vertical space matters less than surface area — a wide, shallow footprint suits it better than a tall, narrow one.
It is not the size trap that its bonytongue relatives can be — at 3.9–5.9 in it stays genuinely small — but it is still a predator with a mouth that opens wide relative to its body, and it will eat any tankmate small enough to fit, along with fry from other fish. Combine that with the fact that it competes directly, at the surface, with any other top-dwelling species, and the sensible approach is to choose companions that occupy the lower and middle water column and are too large to be eaten rather than true dither or surface fish. Strong surface agitation from powerful filter outflows or airstones is unwelcome and best minimised, since it disrupts the still surface film the species relies on to hunt and rest.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pantodon buchholzi as Least Concern, an assessment carried out in 2019. It is a widespread species across multiple river basins in West and Central Africa, and no major population-level threats are documented at the assessment's whole-range scale.
As with many broadly distributed forest-water fish, the picture is not necessarily uniform everywhere within that range — localised habitat loss, wetland drainage and water-quality decline are the kinds of pressures that could affect individual populations even where the species as a whole remains secure. The aquarium trade in this species draws on wild-collected stock from parts of its range, but there is no indication in the available conservation literature that this collection is driving range-wide decline.
