Paramormyrops tavernei is a small, weakly electric mormyrid known only from the Upper Lualaba basin, a headwater stretch of the Congo River system in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Like every member of the family Mormyridae it belongs to Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongue fishes — one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleosts, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a matching pad on the roof of the mouth. It generates a species-specific pulse discharge from an electric organ in the tail, which it uses to read its dim, sediment-stained home water and, almost certainly, to communicate with others of its kind. It is a narrow-range, little-studied fish with essentially no presence in the aquarium trade, and much about its biology remains undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

The Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll described this species in 1972 as Brienomyrus tavernei, from material collected at Masombwe on the Kipepe River, a tributary of the Tumbwe in the Upper Lualaba basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was later transferred to the genus Paramormyrops, within the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — inside the order Osteoglossiformes, the ancient bonytongue fishes that also include the arowanas, arapaima and African butterflyfish on other continents. Mormyrid classification has been revised repeatedly as DNA sequencing and electric-organ-discharge (EOD) waveforms are compared against the older, skeleton-based system Poll and his contemporaries worked from; FishBase notes a recent proposal to move this species again, to the genus Heteromormyrus, and the genus-level picture for Paramormyrops as a whole is still being sorted out.

The genus name Paramormyrops combines the Greek para, "beside" or "near", with Mormyrus, the family's type genus — "near Mormyrus", flagging a close but distinct relationship to that older genus. The species epithet tavernei honors Louis Taverne, a Belgian ichthyologist at the Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale whose detailed osteological work on mormyrid skulls and skeletons underpins much of the family's modern classification.

Morphology

Paramormyrops tavernei is a small mormyrid, reaching a reported maximum of about 5.5 in total length. Like other members of the family it has a laterally compressed body, small eyes, and a small mouth without the elongated, trunk-like chin appendage (the schnauzenorgan) that characterizes the better-known elephantnose, Gnathonemus petersii — that structure is confined to a handful of genera, and species-level illustration of the head shape in P. tavernei is not documented in the sources consulted here.

The defining feature of the family, shared by this species, is an electric organ near the base of the tail, made of modified muscle cells (electrocytes) that fire a weak, pulse-type electric-organ discharge.
