Taxonomy & naming
Xenomystus nigri was described by the ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1868, with the type locality given as the Niger River in West Africa. It is the sole member of its genus — a monotypic genus, meaning no other living species is currently classified within Xenomystus — placed in the family Notopteridae, the Old World featherback knifefishes, within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongue fishes. Osteoglossiformes is among the most ancient surviving lineages of teleost (ray-finned bony) fishes, its members named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a corresponding patch on the roof of the mouth, a genuinely primitive arrangement found nowhere else among modern fish groups.
The genus name Xenomystus is conventionally read as combining the Greek xenos ("strange" or "foreign") with mystus, itself a classical genus name once applied to whiskered catfishes (from mystax, "moustache", for their barbels) — together something close to "strange mystus", a nod to the fish's superficially catfish-like, elongate, barbelled profile. The species epithet nigri is Latinised for "of black" (niger, "black"), describing its uniformly dark, blackish-brown body. Notopteridae also contains the larger Asian featherbacks of the genera Chitala and Notopterus, plus the other African featherback genus, Papyrocranus; Xenomystus nigri is told apart from all of them by lacking a dorsal fin entirely, a feature unique among the family.
Morphology
Xenomystus nigri takes the classic featherback build to its extreme: a body strongly flattened from side to side and knife-shaped, deepest just behind the head and tapering to a fine point at the tail. Uniquely among the family it has no dorsal fin at all — the Asian featherbacks (Chitala, Notopterus) and its African cousin Papyrocranus all retain at least a small one. In its place, the anal and caudal fins are fused into a single, long, uniform "skirt" that runs unbroken from just behind the gill opening all the way around the tail, the fish's principal means of propulsion, driven by rippling waves passing along this ribbon fin while the body itself stays comparatively still.
Coloration is plain and functional: a uniform dark chocolate-brown to blackish-olive over the whole body and fins, fitting the species' Latin epithet nigri, "black". Reported maximum size is around 11.8 in total length, though most specimens seen in the trade are considerably smaller, commonly 3.9–5.9 in. The skin carries no obvious scale armour, and the species is generally regarded as effectively scaleless, a detail that matters for dosing medications (see "In the aquarium"). Like other Osteoglossiformes it has an accessory air-breathing organ — a vascularised swim bladder that lets it gulp air at the surface and tolerate poorly oxygenated water — and it is one of the few aquarium fish able to produce an audible sound, an odd "bark" made by forcibly expelling air through this structure.
Habitat
Xenomystus nigri is widespread across West and Central Africa, recorded from the Niger, Congo, Chad and Ogooué (Ogowe) basins, as well as a scatter of coastal West African rivers in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Togo, Benin and Cameroon. Rather than the open channel of a big river, it favours the stiller, more overgrown corners of that range: quiet, vegetated backwaters, flooded swamp forest, and slow, shaded creeks with plenty of submerged wood and leaf litter — precisely the low-oxygen, low-flow habitats its air-breathing lets it exploit.
Water there is soft and acidic to near-neutral, with the species tolerating a pH of roughly 5.8 to 7.5 and warm tropical temperatures of about 73–82 °F. This sits at the opposite end of the water-chemistry spectrum from a hard, alkaline rift-lake fish: dim, tannin-tinted, structurally cluttered water is the natural condition, and the fish is most active after dark, retreating into cover such as root tangles and submerged branches by day.
Feeding
In the wild Xenomystus nigri is carnivorous, foraging mostly by night over and among submerged wood and vegetation for aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms are the likely staples, located as much by scent and mechanoreception as by eyesight in the dim, structurally complex water it prefers.
In the aquarium it is an easy feeder once settled, readily taking sinking meaty foods: frozen bloodworm, chopped prawn or mysis, and good-quality sinking carnivore pellets or wafers are all accepted. Because it is nocturnal, condition is usually better if food is offered after the lights go out or the tank is dimmed, so it isn't repeatedly outcompeted by more visible, day-active tankmates.
Mating
Documented spawning behaviour in Xenomystus nigri follows the pattern typical of the family Notopteridae: this is a substrate egg-layer, not a mouthbrooder or an open-water scatterer. A spawning pair deposits an adhesive clutch directly onto a firm surface — submerged wood or rock — rather than dispersing eggs into the water column or building a bubble or plant nest.
Courtship itself — how pairs form, whether there is a distinct pairing ritual, and how territories are established in the wild — is not well documented for this species; most of what is known comes from the small number of successful aquarium spawnings rather than field observation, so the finer behavioural detail should be treated as data sparse.
Breeding
Where breeding has been recorded, the male takes on essentially all of the parental care. He guards a clutch of roughly 150–200 adhesive eggs laid on wood or rock, fanning them with his fins to keep them oxygenated and free of fungus, for around ten days until they hatch. There is no evidence of biparental care, or of the female remaining to help guard the brood.
Captive breeding is documented but genuinely infrequent — most Xenomystus nigri reaching the trade are wild-caught rather than tank-raised, and hobbyist accounts of successful spawns are comparatively rare. Soft, acidic water, dense cover, a large well-conditioned individual and a stable, undisturbed setup are the common threads in the handful of reported successes, but no repeatable, reliable protocol for inducing spawning in the home aquarium has been established.
In the aquarium
Xenomystus nigri has an unusual reputation within its family: while most of the larger featherback knifefishes are boisterous predators that outgrow all but the largest aquaria, this one stays modest — topping out around 11.8 in — and is genuinely one of the more peaceable Notopteridae once it is past the stage of swallowing bite-sized tankmates. That makes it the practical, community-friendly exception in a group otherwise built around size-trap warnings.
That said, its care still asks for commitment: soft, acidic-to-neutral water (roughly pH 5.8–7.5) at 73–82 °F, dim lighting, and plenty of cover — driftwood, root tangles, tubes or caves — since it is a nocturnal fish that spends daylight hours tucked out of sight and does much of its feeding after dark. It is best kept singly, or in a genuinely large group rather than as a pair or trio, since individuals housed in twos and threes tend to bicker, and it is generally not a good match for other knifefish species in the same tank. Two care points follow directly from its biology: it is effectively scaleless, so it is more sensitive than a scaled fish to copper-based medications and should be dosed conservatively; and, as an air-breathing fish, it needs reliable, unobstructed access to the surface to gulp air, so decor and floating cover shouldn't seal it off from the top of the tank. A secure, gap-free lid is still worth fitting, as with most Osteoglossiformes.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Xenomystus nigri as Least Concern, most recently in 2022. It is a widely distributed species across West and Central Africa, recorded from the Niger, Congo, Chad and Ogooué basins as well as scattered coastal rivers from Sierra Leone to Cameroon, and no significant range-wide threats have been documented.
That broad distribution and apparent tolerance of a range of still, vegetated freshwater habitats give it a more secure conservation footing than many of Africa's more narrowly endemic fishes. Its status is a reminder that not every wild-caught aquarium fish is under pressure — though as with any wide-ranging species, local habitat degradation such as clearing of swamp forest, pollution and damming could still affect regional populations even while the species as a whole remains unthreatened.
