Taxonomy & naming
Brachyplatystoma platynema was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898. It belongs to the family Pimelodidae, the long-whiskered catfishes of South America, within the genus Brachyplatystoma, a group of large, migratory, commercially important river catfishes that also includes the piraíba (B. filamentosum) and the dourada (B. rousseauxii). The Catalog of Fishes treats Brachyplatystoma platynema as the currently valid combination, and it has not required a genus change since its description.
The genus name Brachyplatystoma is built from Greek roots — brachys (short), platys (broad/flat) and stoma (mouth) — describing the short, broad-mouthed head typical of the genus. The species epithet platynemum likewise draws on platys (broad/flat) combined with nema (thread), a reference to the flattened barbels or fin filaments of the species. The common name "slobbering catfish" refers to the large, loose-lipped mouth typical of these big pimelodids.

Morphology
This is a large, elongate pimelodid catfish with a flattened head, a wide terminal mouth and three pairs of long barbels used to feel out prey and surroundings in murky river water. The body is scaleless and smooth-skinned, silvery to grey along the flanks, typical of the genus's open-water, migratory build. A stiff, serrated spine anchors the leading edge of the dorsal fin and each pectoral fin; these spines lock erect and can jab or tangle in a net.
Reported sizes range from around 19.7 in up to a maximum of about 39.4 in SL, with exceptional Orinoco basin specimens documented to roughly 46.1 in. Growth is fast and sustained — this is not a fish that plateaus at aquarium-friendly dimensions. Males and females both reach large size, with some data suggesting females run somewhat larger than males in bigger individuals, though this is not a reliable field character.
Habitat
Brachyplatystoma platynema is native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America, with its type locality in Pará, Brazil. It occupies the main channels and larger tributaries of these river systems rather than small streams or still backwaters, consistent with the genus's long-distance migratory habits.
Water in its native range is warm and ranges from soft to moderately hard, roughly 72–82 °F with pH spanning about 6.0–8.0 and hardness up to around 357 ppm depending on the specific river reach and season — a reminder that Amazon and Orinoco mainstem water is not uniformly soft and acidic the way blackwater tributaries are. Genetic studies of the species across the Amazon basin point to historical population structuring tied to the basin's river geography, underscoring how tightly this fish is bound to its river system.
Feeding
This is a large nocturnal piscivore. In the wild it hunts other fish, particularly bottom-dwelling species, using its barbels to locate prey in low light and turbid water, and its size allows it to take substantial meals relative to its own body length.
In captivity it readily accepts dead and prepared foods in place of live prey — whole fish, prawns, mussels, squid and fish strips are all taken. Adult specimens do not need to be fed daily; roughly one substantial meal a week is typical for a fish of this size and metabolism. Any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth should be assumed to be food, not company.
Mating
Brachyplatystoma platynema belongs to a genus whose reproductive biology is built around long-distance river migration rather than aquarium-style pairing or courtship. Adults are believed to migrate upstream to headwater regions of the Amazon and Orinoco to spawn, mirroring the well-studied migratory spawning runs documented in its relative B. rousseauxii (the dourada), after which larvae and juveniles drift or migrate back downstream, with an extended estuarine and lower-river development phase lasting roughly three years before individuals take up life in the main channels.
No courtship or pairing behaviour has been documented in aquarium settings, and none should be expected: this is not a species anyone keeps in conditions that would permit natural spawning behaviour to be observed, let alone induced.
Breeding
Reproduction in this species is unrecorded in captivity. Large commercial pimelodids of this kind are occasionally propagated at fish-farming or hatchery scale using hormone-induced spawning for food-fish production or restocking purposes, but Brachyplatystoma platynema is not bred in home aquaria, and given its adult size and migratory biology it is not realistic to expect that to change. Anyone encountering claims of home-bred fry of this species should treat them with strong scepticism.
Parental care, to the extent it exists at all in this genus, is not documented — there is no evidence of nest-building, guarding or brooding behaviour. Its entire reproductive strategy relies on open-river spawning migrations and drifting larval/juvenile development that simply cannot be replicated in a tank.
In the aquarium
Brachyplatystoma platynema is a size-trap fish in the fullest sense: it is occasionally offered as an attractive juvenile a few centimetres long, but it grows to around 39.4 in SL, with some individuals documented past 45.3 in. No home aquarium can responsibly house an adult of this species — it belongs strictly to public aquaria, very large pond systems, or exceptional dedicated collections with the space, filtration and budget to match. Prospective keepers should assume they are committing to a fish the length of a bathtub, not a display specimen.
Water should be kept warm (roughly 72–82 °F) with pH in the 6.0–8.0 range, matching its Amazon/Orinoco mainstem origins. Its skin is scaleless, so it is sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard treatments — dose conservatively, as with loaches, puffers and other naked-skinned catfish. It carries stiff, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that can jab the keeper and snag badly in a net; move it in a large, rigid container rather than netting it. As a strict piscivore it will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, so companions must be too large to be prey — in practice, few community fish qualify. It is primarily nocturnal and appreciates dim lighting and open swimming space over ornate decor.
Conservation
Brachyplatystoma platynema has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is listed as Not Evaluated. It is a commercially fished species across much of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, taken as food fish alongside its larger relatives in the genus, and the aquarium trade sources it incidentally from this same wild fishery rather than from any dedicated collection or captive-breeding effort.
Peer-reviewed genetic research on the species has examined population structuring across the Amazon basin with an eye to conservation and fisheries management, reflecting concern about the sustainability of large-bodied migratory catfish harvests generally in the region. Because it depends on long-distance river migration to spawn, dams and other barriers across the Amazon and Orinoco systems are a plausible long-term threat to its life cycle, even though no formal Red List assessment yet exists to quantify that risk.
