Taxonomy & naming

Ng and Kottelat described Caelatoglanis zonatus in 2005. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists it as valid, authority Ng & Kottelat, 2005, in Sisoridae, the Asian sisorid catfishes. The original description names the stream "Chon Son" in Kayin State, Myanmar, as the type locality. The store listing spells the species name zonata; the Latin ending zonatus agrees with the masculine genus Caelatoglanis and is the correct form.

Morphology

FishBase gives a maximum of 1.5 in SL. The genus name means carved catfish and the species name means banded. Detailed colour and body description are not included in the FishBase entry used here.

Habitat

FishBase records the species as freshwater and benthopelagic, from Myanmar. The type locality is a stream between Kyondaw and Phadaw about 12 mi northwest of Payathouzu, at the Thai border, in Kayin State. No temperature, pH or hardness range is recorded.

Feeding

FishBase records no diet. Small sisorids graze insect larvae and organic film on stones, and aquarium keepers use small live and frozen foods.

Mating

Courtship and spawning behaviour are not recorded in the available sources.

Breeding

No breeding record is available for this species.

In the aquarium

Little is documented about keeping this fish. At 1.5 in it is small, and a species tank with clean, well-oxygenated water, rocky cover and gentle flow is the setting that suits sisorids from hill streams. Water parameters are not recorded in FishBase. Keep it with calm small fish and offer small live or frozen foods near the bottom.

Conservation

No IUCN assessment is known to the atlas. The species is known from a single stream region in Kayin State, Myanmar.

Where it has been recorded

2 georeferenced records (GBIF). Each point is a field observation or museum specimen — pan and zoom to explore where this species turns up. The coordinates come straight from GBIF and are often rounded or tied to the nearest town or river landing, so a dot can sit just beside the actual water rather than in it.
