Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by Jacques Mees in 1988 as Tatia romani, based on material from the Río Guarapiche, an affluent of the Río San Juan near Maturín in Monagas state, Venezuela. It was subsequently moved into the genus Centromochlus, where FishBase currently lists it as the valid combination Duringlanis romani (Mees, 1988); some recent literature has proposed splitting part of Centromochlus into a resurrected genus Duringlanis, under which this species appears in aquarium references as Duringlanis romani. This article follows the FishBase-recognised placement in Centromochlus.
Duringlanis romani belongs to the family Auchenipteridae, the driftwood catfishes, a large Neotropical group best known among aquarists for its unusual internal-fertilisation breeding biology (see Mating and Breeding). Within the family it sits among the small, slender-bodied "woodcat" genera — Tatia, Centromochlus and their relatives — that shelter in submerged wood and leaf litter rather than the larger, more heavily armoured auchenipterids of open river channels.
This fish was long listed as Centromochlus romani; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Duringlanis, and the current combination Duringlanis romani is followed here.
Morphology
This is a genuinely small catfish: FishBase records a maximum of 1.3 in standard length, and hobbyist sources give a similar 1.2 in total length, making it one of the smallest driftwood cats commonly discussed in the aquarium literature. The body is slender and compressed, with the typical auchenipterid profile — three pairs of barbels, a short-based adipose fin, and translucent to lightly pigmented fins.
Like essentially all catfishes it is scaleless, with naked skin rather than the bony plating seen in armoured groups such as the corydoradine cories or loricariid plecos. That skin makes it sensitive to copper and many other medications, so any treatment should be dosed conservatively, as with loaches, puffers and eels. It also carries the stiff, serrated pectoral spines typical of catfishes generally; on a fish this size the spines are modest but can still snag in net mesh, so scooping the fish out with a small container rather than a net is the safer handling method.
Habitat
Duringlanis romani is known from the San Juan River basin of eastern Venezuela, with its type locality at the Río Guarapiche near Maturín, Monagas state — a warm, lowland tropical river system rather than a blackwater or highland stream. Water there runs mildly acidic to near-neutral and warm, and aquarium sources recommend replicating roughly 72–77 °F and pH 6.0–7.0.
As a small driftwood cat it is a bottom- and structure-oriented fish, sheltering by day among submerged wood, root tangles and leaf litter and emerging to forage after dark. It is not a fish of open, current-swept water; cover is a functional need, not just aquascaping.
Feeding
In nature Duringlanis romani forages the substrate and cover at night for small aquatic invertebrates — the diet of a nocturnal benthic micro-predator rather than a specialist. In the aquarium it readily accepts frozen bloodworm, daphnia and similar small frozen foods, along with sinking pellets and other prepared foods sized appropriately for a 1.2 in fish.
Because it is strictly nocturnal, it forages poorly against diurnal tankmates in a lit, active community. Offering food after the lights go out, or specifically once the fish are seen emerging from cover at dusk, gives this small cat a fair chance to feed without being outcompeted.
Mating
Duringlanis romani breeds by internal fertilisation, the defining reproductive trait of the driftwood catfish family Auchenipteridae and one of the more unusual mating systems among catfishes generally. The male's anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ used to transfer sperm directly into the female during a brief mating contact, rather than the eggs and milt being released together into open water as in most catfishes.
Following internal fertilisation the female can store sperm and does not need to lay immediately; she may deposit fertile eggs some time after mating, on her own timetable. This decoupling of mating from spawning is rare among catfishes and is worth stating plainly rather than assuming the more familiar open-water egg-scattering pattern seen in most Siluriformes.
Breeding
Spawning has been observed in aquaria: the female deposits a gelatinous mass of fertilised eggs, typically tucked under a stone, piece of bogwood or similar cover, some time after internal mating has taken place. This makes Duringlanis romani one of the more genuinely home-breedable driftwood cats, in contrast to many larger Auchenipteridae and most catfish groups generally, which are rarely if ever spawned by hobbyists.
Parental care beyond placing the egg mass in a sheltered spot is not well documented for this species; the eggs are left in their gelatinous covering rather than actively guarded by a parent in the way a bubble-nesting callichthyid or a cavity-spawning ictalurid would guard a clutch. Given the fish's small size and cryptic, nocturnal habits, a well-planted or wood-furnished tank with stable, clean water gives the best chance of witnessing a spawn.
In the aquarium
At a genuine adult maximum of around 1.2 in, Duringlanis romani is one of the true small catfishes and needs no more than a modest tank — PlanetCatfish notes it suits a 10–30 gallon setup — but that small size cuts both ways: it is easily outcompeted for food by larger or more boisterous tankmates and can disappear into filter intakes or wide substrate gaps, so tankmates and hardscape should be chosen with its size in mind rather than assuming small automatically means undemanding.
Water quality matters more than volume: PlanetCatfish stresses clean water as critical, and a sponge filter or hang-on-back filter is recommended over anything with strong intake suction. Provide driftwood, leaf litter and other cover for daytime shelter, since this is a strictly nocturnal fish that will rarely be seen foraging in a brightly lit tank. As with all scaleless catfishes, dose copper-based and other medications conservatively — its naked skin is more sensitive than that of scaled fishes. A planted tank with plenty of hiding space suits it well.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Duringlanis romani as Least Concern in 2020. It is known from a specific river system in eastern Venezuela — the San Juan basin, including the Río Guarapiche near Maturín — rather than being a wide-ranging Amazonian species, but no major threats have driven a higher-risk listing to date.
As with many small, range-restricted South American catfishes, long-term conservation depends on the health of its home river system; habitat degradation or pollution in the San Juan basin would be the most relevant local pressure, though no current data cited in the assessment suggest a change in status is imminent.
