Taxonomy & naming
Schilthuis described the species in 1891, and the parentheses around the authority show it was first placed in another genus. The Catalog of Fishes lists Euchilichthys guentheri as valid, with the type locality at Kinshasa, Stanley Pool, in the upper Congo near Brazzaville. It belongs to Mochokidae.
Morphology
FishBase gives a maximum length of 7.5 in TL. Euchilichthys species are mochokids with thick, fleshy lips, which the genus name records, and the usual mochokid spines and head shield.
Habitat
FishBase lists the Congo River basin from the lower course up to the Bangweulu drainage in Zambia, and gives a temperature of 73–79 °F. No pH or hardness range is given.
Feeding
FishBase has no diet entry for this species.
Mating
FishBase records distinct pairing during breeding, as for other mochokids.
Breeding
FishBase records the species as an egg-layer (oviparous). No captive spawning is recorded.
In the aquarium
It needs a large tank with strong current and rocky cover, if it is available at all. Few aquarists have kept it, and no husbandry record is available for it.
Conservation
IUCN lists the species as Least Concern, assessed in 2009, on the strength of its wide Congo range.
