Taxonomy & naming
Tatia concolor was described by Geraldus Fransciscus Mees in 1974, with the holotype (ZMA 106210) collected from the headwaters of the Coppename River, Suriname, at roughly 3°49'N, 56°57'W. It sits in the subfamily Centromochlinae within Auchenipteridae, the driftwood catfishes, a family long shuffled between Doradidae and Silurus-era classifications in older literature before settling into its current placement.
FishBase and some hobby sources still list the species as Tatia concolor, reflecting a period when several Centromochlus species were placed in the closely related genus Tatia; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Tatia concolor as the currently valid combination, and that is the name used here. Little has been published on the species beyond its original description and basic distribution records, so much of its biology is inferred from better-studied Auchenipteridae relatives.
This fish was long listed as Centromochlus concolor; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Tatia, and the current combination Tatia concolor is followed here.
Morphology
Like other driftwood cats, Tatia concolor has a small, laterally compressed body, a blunt head with barbels for feeling out crevices in submerged wood, and stiff pectoral and dorsal spines that can be locked erect — a genuine hazard to careless hands and to a soft aquarium net. The species name concolor ("of one/uniform colour") is somewhat misleading in practice, as fish are commonly described with dark circular spots scattered over the body rather than a truly plain ground colour.
The skin is scaleless, as in essentially all catfishes, which has direct consequences for medicating the species (see "In the aquarium"). Reported maximum size is about 3 in standard length for males; this is a genuinely small catfish by Siluriformes standards, but it should still be sized for as an adult fish rather than assumed to stay smaller.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Coppename River basin in central Suriname, part of the Guiana Shield drainage into the Atlantic. It is a freshwater, demersal fish of tropical lowland rivers, where driftwood cats characteristically shelter in submerged wood, root mats and leaf litter during the day.
Detailed water-chemistry data for the type locality has not been published in the sources available here, so specific temperature, pH and hardness figures are data sparse. As a lowland Guiana Shield river fish it is reasonable to expect warm, soft, tropical water broadly typical of the region, but no verified numbers should be asserted beyond that until better sourced.
Feeding
Auchenipteridae as a family are nocturnal benthic omnivores and micro-predators, foraging over the bottom and among submerged wood after dark for aquatic invertebrates, detritus and small prey items. Tatia concolor has not been specifically studied, but there is no reason to expect it departs from this family-wide pattern.
In the aquarium, driftwood cats of this type generally accept sinking pellets, frozen foods and other prepared foods once settled, and — as with most nocturnal catfish — do best when fed after the lights go out so they are not out-competed by more visible, day-active tankmates.
Mating
Driftwood catfishes of the family Auchenipteridae are one of the very few catfish groups that use internal fertilisation. In males the anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ used to transfer sperm directly to the female during mating, rather than the eggs being fertilised externally in open water. The female then stores the sperm internally and lays fertile eggs some time later, potentially weeks after mating — a reproductive strategy that is genuinely unusual among catfishes and worth stating plainly rather than assuming the more typical egg-scattering pattern seen in many other groups.
No published account of courtship or mating behaviour specific to Tatia concolor is available in the sources consulted here; the internal-fertilisation mechanism described is a well-documented trait of the family and subfamily this species belongs to, not a claim about this species' behaviour in particular.
Breeding
Because fertilisation is internal and delayed, breeding driftwood cats such as Tatia concolor in the aquarium is difficult to arrange deliberately and has not been documented for this species. There is no evidence of parental care beyond internal sperm storage by the female; once eggs are laid there is no indication of nest-building or guarding behaviour typical of the group.
Given how little is published on this species specifically, any aquarium breeding reports should be treated as anecdotal rather than an established protocol. It is honest to say this is not a species with a known, repeatable home-breeding method.
In the aquarium
At around 3 in SL, Tatia concolor is a genuinely small catfish suited to a modestly sized species or community tank, but it should still be given real cover — driftwood, root tangles and dim lighting — to mimic the submerged-wood habitat it hides in during the day. As a nocturnal fish it will be most active once the lights are off.
Being scaleless, like nearly all catfish, it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many standard treatments; a conservative, often half-strength dosing approach is the safer default. Its pectoral and dorsal spines are stiff and can lock, so the fish should be moved in a container rather than netted to avoid tangling and injury to both fish and keeper. Aquarium information on this specific species is very limited, so keepers should treat husbandry as provisional and modelled on better-known Auchenipteridae relatives rather than as a fully worked-out care sheet.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Tatia concolor as Least Concern, with the assessment dated December 2020. It is known from the Coppename River basin in Suriname, a Guiana Shield drainage that remains comparatively little developed relative to more heavily impacted South American river systems.
As with many narrowly distributed, poorly studied catfishes, the Least Concern rating reflects an absence of documented major threats rather than extensive population survey data; the species has essentially no footprint in the aquarium trade, and no wild-collection pressure specific to it has been reported in the sources available.
