Tatia punctata is a small, secretive driftwood catfish from the river drainages of northern South America, rarely topping 5–6 cm and easy to overlook among tank decor by day. It belongs to the family Auchenipteridae, the driftwood or wood catfishes, whose defining oddity is internal fertilisation: the male's anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ, mating happens internally, and the female stores sperm before laying fertile eggs weeks later — a reproductive strategy shared by almost no other catfish. Scaleless, nocturnal and unfussy about food once settled, it is a modest but genuinely distinctive addition for a well-established South American community tank.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by Johannes Mees in 1974 as Tatia punctata, based on material from Pará State, Brazil, and from Suriname. Subsequent revision of the driftwood catfish subfamily Centromochlinae moved it into the genus Centromochlus, and the Catalog of Fishes now treats Tatia punctata (Mees, 1974) as the valid combination — the parenthetical authority signals that original placement in a different genus. It belongs to the family Auchenipteridae, within the small subfamily Centromochlinae alongside genera such as Tatia and Gelanoglanis.

The genus name Centromochlus derives from Greek roots referring to a spine or bolt (kentron) and a bar or lever (mochlos), an old descriptive coinage for the group's fin-spine anatomy rather than a reference to this species specifically. The epithet punctatus is Latin for "spotted" or "dotted", describing the small dark markings scattered over the body that distinguish it from close relatives. Because the genus has been repeatedly revised, older literature and some aquarium-trade labels may still list this fish under Tatia; the current valid name is Tatia punctata.

This fish was long listed as Centromochlus punctatus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Tatia, and the current combination Tatia punctata is followed here.

Morphology

Tatia punctata is a small catfish, with related species in the genus (C. reticulatus, C. perugiae) topping out around 2–2.4 in standard length, and this species is expected to fall in the same modest size range. It has the typical driftwood-cat build: a flattened head, large eyes suited to nocturnal foraging, three pairs of barbels, and a slender body tapering to a forked tail. Like all catfishes in this family it is scaleless — naked skin rather than bony plates or scutes — which makes it more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many standard treatments; a conservative, often half-strength dose is the safer default.

The body carries the small dark spotting referenced in the species name, set against a pale to translucent ground colour, and the fins are largely clear or lightly marked. As in other Auchenipteridae, adult males can be recognised by the modified anterior rays of the anal fin, which form the intromittent organ used in internal fertilisation — a structural difference from the female's more conventional fin that is one of the more reliable ways to sex a mature pair.

Habitat

Tatia punctata is native to northern South America, with type material collected from Igarapé Kumadueni, a tributary of the Rio Paru in Pará State, Brazil, and from rivers between Kabel and Lombé in Suriname. The wider genus Centromochlus ranges across the Orinoco basin, the upper and lowland Amazon, the Rio Tocantins and Rio Xingu, and the coastal rivers of the Guiana Shield from the Essequibo in Guyana to Amapá in Brazil, though detailed distribution data for this particular species remains sparse.

It is a fish of flowing, well-oxygenated South American rivers and streams, typically found around submerged wood, root tangles and leaf litter where it can hide by day. As with most driftwood cats, it favours moderate current and structure-rich habitat over open water, sheltering in crevices until dark.

Feeding

This is a nocturnal, benthic micro-predator and omnivore. In the wild it forages after dark over the riverbed and among submerged wood for small invertebrates, insect larvae and detritus, using its barbels to locate food in low light rather than relying on sight alone.

In the aquarium it adapts readily to sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, and other small prepared foods, though it does best when fed after the lights go out — a daytime feeding regime in a mixed community tends to leave this shy nocturnal fish out-competed and underfed. Live or frozen foods offered near its driftwood retreat in the evening give the most reliable results.

Mating

Tatia punctata reproduces by internal fertilisation, the signature trait of the family Auchenipteridae and a genuine rarity among catfishes. The male's anal fin is modified into an intromittent, gonopodium-like structure used to transfer sperm directly to the female during a brief internal mating event, rather than the external egg-and-milt release typical of most siluriforms.

Following mating, the female stores the sperm internally and does not lay eggs immediately; fertile eggs are released only weeks later, once conditions are suitable. This delayed-release strategy means a female can produce a fertile spawn well after any contact with a male, a pattern that has occasionally surprised aquarists who assumed a lone female could not produce viable eggs.

Breeding

Breeding in the home aquarium is rarely documented for Tatia punctata specifically, though the family's internal-fertilisation strategy is well characterised. Once the female releases her stored-sperm-fertilised eggs, there is little to no parental care from either parent — the eggs are typically scattered rather than guarded, consistent with the low parental investment seen elsewhere in the subfamily once mating itself is complete.

Given the scarcity of aquarium-breeding reports, this should be treated as an occasional, largely unplanned event rather than a repeatable home-breeding project; hobbyists keeping a mixed-sex group in a stable, well-furnished river-style tank offer the best chance of witnessing it, but should not expect predictable spawns.

In the aquarium

Tatia punctata is a small fish — realistically 2–2.4 in as an adult based on its closest relatives — so it does not present the classic catfish size trap, but it does need a tank with real current, dissolved oxygen and structure rather than a static, bare setup. Driftwood, root tangles, rocky crevices and leaf litter give it the cover it needs to feel secure by day; it emerges mostly after dark.

Being scaleless, it is medication-sensitive: dose copper-based treatments and many standard medications conservatively, often at half strength, as is standard practice for naked-skinned catfishes. It has none of the locking venomous spines or aggressive size of larger catfish families, making it a genuinely peaceful, easy-to-net fish for handling and tank transfers, though it should still be moved gently given its small size and delicate skin. Keep it with small, peaceful South American tankmates and avoid pairing it with anything large enough to see it as food.

Conservation

Tatia punctata has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no formal conservation status is available. Data on population trends and threats specific to this species are sparse.

It inhabits river systems across the Amazon, Orinoco and Guiana Shield drainages that face broader regional pressures — deforestation, sedimentation, damming and mining runoff — but nothing specific to this species' status can be stated without a formal assessment. As with many small, poorly studied driftwood catfish, the aquarium trade likely relies on wild collection rather than captive breeding.
