Taxonomy & naming
Tatia reticulata was described by Cornelis Mees in 1974. It belongs to the family Auchenipteridae, the driftwood catfishes, within the genus Centromochlus. The species has previously been placed in the genus Tatia, and aquarium literature and older references sometimes still list it as Tatia reticulatus; the Catalog of Fishes treats Tatia reticulata as the currently valid combination.
The genus name Centromochlus derives from Greek roots referring to a spine or lever, a nod to the prominent, mobile pectoral-fin spines shared across the genus. The species epithet reticulatus is Latin for "net-like" or "reticulated", describing the fine mesh-like pattern on the body that gives the fish its common trade name.
This fish was long listed as Centromochlus reticulatus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Tatia, and the current combination Tatia reticulata is followed here.
Morphology
This is a genuinely small catfish: FishBase records a maximum of about 1.6 in standard length, with some literature specimens as small as 1.06 in. Like other driftwood cats it has a slender, somewhat compressed body, a broad flattened head, and long, prominent barbels used to feel out food and cover in the dark. The skin is scaleless (naked), as in all catfishes, which matters for medication dosing.
The body carries a fine, net-like reticulated pattern of dark markings over a paler ground colour, the source of both its scientific epithet and its "Violet Spotted Woodcat" trade name. As in the wider genus, the pectoral fins bear stiff, serrated spines that can be locked erect — small on this species compared to larger catfishes, but still capable of snagging a net.
Habitat
Tatia reticulata is native to northern South America, recorded from the Rupununi River basin in Guyana (the type locality), the rio Preto da Eva in Brazil, and river systems in Peru. It inhabits forest streams and river-margin habitats typical of the region, often around submerged wood, root tangles and leaf litter, which give the species its "driftwood cat" and "woodcat" names.
Water in these habitats tends to be soft and can range from acidic to fairly neutral; Seriously Fish gives a pH range of roughly 5.0–7.5 and a hardness of about 18–215 ppm, indicating tolerance across a range of soft-to-moderately mineralised water rather than a strict blackwater specialist. Temperatures in the wild and recommended for the aquarium run about 72–82 °F. Flow tends to be present in these stream habitats, and the species does well with some current simulated in the tank.
Feeding
Tatia reticulata is a nocturnal benthic forager, active mainly after dark, picking small invertebrates and other food items from wood, leaf litter and the substrate. It is not a strict bottom-dweller in captivity, however — PlanetCatfish notes that once acclimated it will feed actively even at the surface.
In the aquarium it accepts sinking dried and pelleted foods but clearly prefers small live or frozen foods such as bloodworm and Tubifex, which it relishes. Because it is most active at night, offering food after lights-out helps ensure this small, retiring catfish gets its share in a mixed tank rather than being outcompeted by more active daytime feeders.
Mating
As a member of the driftwood catfish family Auchenipteridae, Tatia reticulata breeds by internal fertilisation, a strategy rare among catfishes. The male's anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ used to transfer sperm directly to the female during mating, rather than the pair releasing eggs and milt together into open water.
Following mating, the female stores the sperm internally and does not lay fertilised eggs immediately. Eggs are released and spawned later, sometimes well after the mating event, once conditions are favourable — a reproductive pattern closer to some sharks and livebearing fishes than to the broadcast- or nest-spawning typical of most other catfish groups.
Breeding
Because fertilisation is internal and sperm storage delays spawning, breeding this species in the aquarium is unpredictable and it is not a routinely captive-bred fish in the hobby. PlanetCatfish notes that a hard water change together with soft, slightly acidic water (around pH 6.5) and cover from floating plants or java moss has been associated with breeding activity, but detailed, repeatable spawning accounts are scarce.
There is no parental care once eggs are laid — the female's role ends with releasing the stored, fertilised eggs, and there is no nest-guarding or brooding behaviour reported for this species. Aquarists interested in breeding driftwood cats should treat any spawn as opportunistic rather than something reliably triggered on demand.
In the aquarium
Tatia reticulata stays genuinely tiny, at only around 1.6 in, so it is well suited to smaller aquaria — PlanetCatfish suggests a footprint of about 60 x 11.8 in as a minimum. Even so, it should be kept in a mature, well-established tank with plenty of wood, roots and plant cover to replicate the driftwood tangles it shelters in during the day; it is a shy, nocturnal fish that needs those hiding places to feel secure.
As with all catfish, its scaleless skin makes it more sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard treatments than scaled fish, so any medicating should be done conservatively and with caution. Its pectoral spines, while modest for the family, can still lock and catch in a net, so scooping it out with a container rather than netting reduces stress and injury risk. Water should be kept soft to moderately hard and mildly acidic to neutral (roughly pH 5.0–7.5) at 72–82 °F, with some water movement. It is peaceful and suits quiet, soft-water community setups alongside similarly small, non-aggressive tankmates.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessment for Tatia reticulata is not directly accessible via search, but FishBase reports the species as Least Concern, referencing the 2022.2 IUCN Red List update. It has a fairly broad recorded range across Guyana, Brazil and Peru, spanning multiple river drainages, which is consistent with a lower-risk status.
As with many small, wide-ranging Amazonian and Guianan stream fishes, region-specific pressures such as deforestation, mining-related sedimentation and habitat degradation are the main long-term concerns even where the overall IUCN category is not elevated. The aquarium trade for this species draws on wild-collected fish rather than commercial captive breeding, given the unpredictability of its internal-fertilisation reproductive strategy.
