Taxonomy & naming
Eleotris acanthopomus was described by Pieter Bleeker in 1853. It belongs to the family Eleotridae — the sleepers and gudgeons — and not to the true gobies of the family Gobiidae or their relatives. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the authority for valid names, places the genus Eleotris firmly in the Eleotridae, and the specific epithet acanthopoma is Greek for 'spiny opercle' or 'spiny gill cover', referring to the serrated preopercular margin that is a useful field character for the species.
The distinction from true gobies matters for the keeper: true gobies (Gobiidae and relatives) fuse their paired pelvic fins into a cup-shaped sucker disc used for clinging to rocks and substrates; sleepers and gudgeons keep the two pelvic fins separate. A glance at the underside resolves any confusion. Although the popular name 'Asian sleeper' and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listing use that vernacular, the fish is sometimes simply called 'sleeper goby' in the hobby, perpetuating the goby label — it is technically a gudgeon/sleeper. No synonyms in wide modern use are recorded in the cache, but the genus Eleotris has historically held numerous species described by Bleeker across the mid-nineteenth century, and historical combinations under Gobius or Eleotris sensu lato may appear in older literature.
This fish was long listed as Eleotris acanthopoma; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Eleotris, and the current combination Eleotris acanthopomus is followed here.
Morphology
Eleotris acanthopomus is a moderately large sleeper reaching up to 5.5 in standard length (SL). The body is elongate and cylindrical anteriorly, tapering to a laterally compressed caudal peduncle. The head is broad, flattened and large relative to the body, with a wide mouth set slightly inferior and suited for ambush predation. Coloration is cryptic — brownish to grey-brown above, paler below, often mottled or marbled with darker blotches that break up the outline against mud and leaf litter. The operculum bears the characteristic spiny serrations that gave the species its name.
The pelvic fins are free and separate, the definitive character distinguishing sleepers from the true gobies, in which the pelvic fins are fused into a sucker disc. Two separate dorsal fins are present, as in all eleotrids. Sexes are difficult to distinguish externally outside the breeding season; the male may be slightly more robust, but reliable sexing generally requires examination of the genital papilla.
Habitat
The Asian sleeper occupies a broad range of coastal and estuarine environments across the Indo-Pacific. FishBase records its occurrence in fresh, brackish and marine water, with a primary presence in the lower reaches of coastal rivers and streams, estuaries and mangrove creeks, typically over mud or soft-sediment bottoms. Its temperature range recorded in FishBase data spans approximately 76–85 °F (mean 83 °F), reflecting the warm tropical and subtropical climates it inhabits from southern Japan and Taiwan south through the Philippines and Indonesia to the islands of the southwestern Pacific and across to the Indian Ocean islands of Madagascar, the Comoros and Seychelles.
Its tolerance of both fresh and brackish water is characteristic of amphidromous Eleotris species: adults live and spawn in freshwater rivers or at the fresh-brackish interface, but the larvae develop in the sea before post-larvae return upriver. The species is strongly tied to lowland coastal drainages and is rarely recorded far from tidal influence.
Feeding
Eleotris acanthopomus is a carnivore with a trophic level of approximately 3.9 (FishBase), consistent with active predation on small aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, insect larvae and small fish. It is an ambush predator rather than an active hunter: the broad flattened head, wide gape and cryptic colouration are all adaptations for lying motionless on or near the substrate until prey passes within striking range.
In the aquarium E. acanthopomus is a micro- to meso-predator. It typically refuses dry flake entirely and responds poorly to pellets — its instinct is to react to movement. It should be offered meaty live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, small crustaceans, chironomid larvae and similar invertebrate prey. Larger individuals will readily take small feeder fish or earthworm pieces. Feeding with appropriate live or frozen food is non-negotiable for long-term health and condition.
Mating
Eleotris acanthopomus is amphidromous, and spawning takes place in freshwater rivers and streams. Field research on Okinawa Island (Teima River) and on Kyushu Island (Kitagawa and Sumiegawa Rivers) has documented spawning activity in freshwater reaches, confirming this amphidromous strategy. Eggs are deposited on the undersides of objects — stones, submerged wood, crevices — where they adhere sparsely across a hard surface rather than being laid in a compact mass.
Pre-spawning behaviour in the wild is poorly documented in the literature cached here. The male defends a territory around the chosen spawning site and presumably courts females, as is typical for the genus. Females mature at a small size — field data from the Okinawa study records maturation at approximately 1.1 in SL — suggesting multiple spawning events are possible across a season, each male guarding successive clutches on the substrate.
Breeding
After spawning, the male guards the adhesive eggs on the underside of the chosen object until they hatch. The larvae that emerge are pelagic; field data from the Okinawa River study records pelagic larvae at 0.38–0.52 in SL being recruited from the sea back into the freshwater river, having developed as marine plankton in the open ocean. This is the defining feature of amphidromy in Eleotris: the adults spawn in fresh water and guard the eggs there, but the larvae are swept downstream to the sea, where they develop and grow before the post-larvae find coastal and estuarine habitats and eventually ascend into rivers.
The consequence for the aquarist is unambiguous: Eleotris acanthopomus cannot be bred in captivity. Even if adults could be induced to spawn in an aquarium, the larvae require a marine pelagic phase to complete their development. All specimens in the trade are wild-collected from coastal rivers across their Indo-Pacific range. This should inform purchasing decisions, as collecting pressure on wild populations is the sole source of aquarium stock.
In the aquarium
Eleotris acanthopomus is an uncommonly kept species in the hobby, found more often as an incidental import than as a sought species, but it is occasionally available from importers dealing in unusual sleepers and gobies. It requires a spacious aquarium — a fish reaching 5.5 in SL needs at minimum a 47.2 in tank — with a soft or fine sand substrate into which it can partially settle. The tank should be covered tightly: sleepers are capable jumpers and will exploit any gap.
Water conditions should reflect the brackish estuarine habitat the species naturally inhabits: the addition of marine salt at low concentration (1–5 g/l as a starting point) is advisable and may improve long-term health, though some individuals are kept in fresh water. Temperature should be maintained in the range of approximately 77–84 °F. Decoration should include caves, overhangs and areas of low light where the fish can rest undisturbed. E. acanthopomus is a predator and will eat any fish or shrimp small enough to fit in its mouth; tankmates must be chosen accordingly — other robust fish of similar or larger size. It eats only live and frozen meaty foods and will ignore flake or pellets. Because all specimens are wild-caught, they may arrive stressed and require careful acclimatisation; quarantine before introduction to a display tank is strongly recommended.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Eleotris acanthopomus as Least Concern in May 2020, reflecting its wide Indo-Pacific distribution, tolerance of a range of coastal and estuarine conditions, and absence of evidence of major population decline. Its range spans some of the most biologically productive coastal systems on Earth — the Philippine archipelago, the Indonesian island arc, the SW Pacific — and the species appears adaptable to modified estuarine habitats.
Nonetheless, several pressures apply at the local level. Estuaries and mangrove systems across its range are subject to land reclamation, coastal development, water pollution and mangrove clearance. Because the species is amphidromous and the aquarium trade depends entirely on wild-collected adults and juveniles, sustained collection pressure could affect local populations in easily accessible rivers. The amphidromous lifecycle also makes populations inherently connected across large ocean distances — larvae dispersed by ocean currents can recolonise rivers after local depletion — which is one reason the species retains its LC status despite localised threats. Buyers of this species should be aware that every individual is wild-caught.
