Taxonomy & naming
Amatolebias patriciae was described by Jean H. Huber in 1995, originally placed in the genus Cynolebias, then transferred to the newly erected Austrolebias as phylogenetic understanding of the South American annual killifish clade was refined. The authority is therefore presented in parentheses. The IUCN Red List assessment records two synonyms reflecting earlier generic assignments: Amatolebias patriciae and Cynolebias patriciae. The 2023 revision published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society re-evaluated generic boundaries within the Austrolebias complex and proposed the currently valid genus Amatolebias for this species and its closest relatives; Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) remains the governing authority for the valid combination used here.
The specific epithet patriciae is a Latinised feminine genitive honouring an individual named Patricia, following the long-standing tradition in killifish taxonomy of naming species after collectors, researchers, or their family members. The name is unchanged across the generic reassignments.

Morphology
Patriciae's killifish is a small, compact species reaching 1.2–1.6 in total length, placing it among the dwarf members of the annual killifish assemblage of the Chaco and Pampas. The body plan is typical of Austrolebias: a robust, slightly laterally compressed form, a rounded caudal fin, and a moderately upturned mouth angled to intercept surface and near-surface prey. Males are the more colourful sex, as in virtually all annual killifish, displaying the vivid lateral pigmentation that makes the group a staple of specialist collections.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Males carry the brighter body colouration used in courtship and territorial signalling; females are cryptically coloured, with a plainer, often brownish or olive ground colour that provides camouflage in the murky, organic-rich pool water. Females become noticeably deeper-bodied when carrying eggs. The male's body and fin coloration are essential for species identification in the field, since multiple annual killifish species may co-occur in the same pools.
Habitat
The species inhabits the wet Chaco region, occupying seasonal and intermittent inland wetlands and marshes within the Paraguayan River Basin. Its confirmed range spans two locations in the Chaco province of Argentina and Paraguay, with a possible occurrence in Formosa (Argentina). The IUCN records an Extent of Occurrence of 6,464 mi² and an Area of Occupancy of just 413 mi², reflecting a naturally restricted and now severely fragmented distribution.
The pools these killifish occupy are shallow, warm, and heavily vegetated with aquatic and emergent plants during the flood season. Water is soft and moderately acidic: the hobby literature records a temperature range of 63–72 °F and pH 5.5–6.0, with a general hardness of GH 1–2, consistent with the rainwater-fed, peat-influenced pools typical of the Chacoan lowlands. These are not permanent water bodies — they exist only when seasonal rains bring standing water to the otherwise dry or semiarid landscape, and they may hold water for only a few months before drying completely.
Feeding
Amatolebias patriciae is a carnivore, as are all members of the South American annual killifish guild. In the wild, the diet consists of small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, zooplankton, and any other animal matter accessible in the shallow seasonal pool. The upturned mouth is well adapted for intercepting invertebrates at and just below the water surface.
In captivity the fish feeds readily on live and frozen foods. Artemia nauplii, daphnia, cyclops, and small chironomid larvae are all accepted; frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and small worms form the backbone of most hobby diets. The species' small size means food items must be appropriately scaled — oversized foods are refused or ignored. A varied carnivorous diet keeps adults in breeding condition and is particularly important for females, whose egg production places a high metabolic demand on the body.
Mating
Courtship in Amatolebias patriciae follows the classic annual killifish pattern. The male approaches the female with lateral displays — fanning his coloured fins, flexing his body, and manoeuvring alongside her to show his full flank pattern. Females are selective: the male must sustain the display without triggering flight before she consents to approach the substrate together. Because males in captivity sometimes outnumber females — a sex-ratio skew reported by UK breeders — management of group ratios matters for reducing harassment pressure on individual females.
Once a female is receptive, the pair move together to the softest, deepest part of the substrate — in nature the loose peat, mud, and detritus layer at the pool bottom; in the aquarium a peat or coir spawning medium. They align side by side, and the male curves his body around the female in a spawning embrace that drives them briefly into the substrate as eggs and sperm are released simultaneously.
Breeding
Amatolebias patriciae is a confirmed 'deep diver' — the pair plunge into the soft substrate together, burying each egg well below the surface as it is laid. The eggs are large, yolk-rich, and encased in a tough chorion that protects them through the months of desiccation that follow as the seasonal pool dries. Within the buried egg, the embryo enters diapause — a phase of arrested development synchronized with the dry season. When rains return and the pool refills, or when the hobbyist re-wets the dried peat, the diapause is broken and hatching follows within days.
In the hobby, the standard method is to use a dark peat or coir substrate 2–3.1 in deep in a small breeding tank. After a spawning session of several weeks, the peat is removed, lightly dried, bagged, and stored at room temperature for four to six months before re-wetting over warm, soft water. Fry are large enough relative to the egg size to accept newly hatched Artemia nauplii almost immediately after becoming free-swimming. Growth is rapid: fish can reach sexual maturity within two to three months under good conditions. The wild generation time is compressed to match the flood season, and most individuals likely live under one year in nature. In the aquarium
Amatolebias patriciae is maintained almost exclusively by specialist killifish hobbyists; it is rare in general trade and is most reliably obtained through killifish society networks. Its small size — 1.2–1.6 in — makes it suitable for modest-sized tanks; a 25-litre species tank accommodates a pair or trio comfortably. The aquarium should have a soft, deep substrate layer of peat or coir for spawning, a tight-fitting lid (all killifish are capable jumpers), and subdued lighting consistent with the dark, tannin-stained pools of the Chaco.
Water chemistry should reflect the soft, acidic conditions of the natural habitat: pH 5.5–6.0, very soft (GH 1–2), temperature 61–72 °F. The species is not suited to warm tropical temperatures; cooler conditions in the 63–68 °F range appear to produce the best results for both adult longevity and egg viability. Because wild fish are short-lived annuals, adults in captivity should be regarded as productive for one to two seasons at most, and maintaining a peat-egg reserve is essential continuity practice.
Hobby strains maintained in the UK killifish community include 'Camino Tejerina' (collection code GAK 6-05) and 'Ruta 11, Las Palmas' (GAK 7-05). Keeping these strains labelled and separate preserves the geographic provenance data that is increasingly valuable as the wild populations decline.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List classifies Amatolebias patriciae as Vulnerable (assessed 2020, published 2022), based on an Extent of Occurrence of 6,464 mi² and an Area of Occupancy of just 413 mi², with the population known from only two locations and considered severely fragmented. Population trend is unknown but inferred to be declining. No protected areas cover any part of its range, and no active conservation measures are in place.
The primary threat is agricultural expansion across the wet Chaco: deforestation for livestock grazing, drainage and canalization of seasonal wetlands, filling of pools, and contamination from herbicide and pesticide runoff all degrade or eliminate the seasonal pools on which the species depends. Fire and increasing drought frequency associated with climate change are listed as secondary threats. The combination of a naturally narrow range, dependence on temporary water bodies that are structurally simple and easily destroyed, and intense agricultural pressure across the Chacoan lowlands places this species in a precarious position.
The aquarium hobby provides a small but meaningful buffer: living cultures derived from wild-collected material in the early 2000s are maintained by killifish societies in the UK and elsewhere, and the annotated strain records (collection location, year, collector) kept by organisations such as the British Killifish Association preserve provenance data that may be essential if ex situ conservation measures are ever coordinated for this species.
