Taxonomy & naming

Anablepsoides xanthonotus was originally described by Ernst Ahl in 1926 from material collected in the Amazon basin of Brazil, with the type locality recorded simply as 'Amazonas'. The species has passed through multiple generic placements reflecting decades of revision in the family Rivulidae (now often treated within the broader Aplocheilidae or Cynolebiidae framework under differing classifications). FishBase currently catalogues it as Anablepsoides xanthonotus (Ahl, 1926), placing it in the large and taxonomically complex genus Anablepsoides. The name Anablepsoides xanthonotus, with authority attributed to Huber (1979), follows Huber's reclassification of the South American rivuline assemblage, and is used here as the operational name pending further molecular resolution. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing reference for the valid combination at any given point in the ongoing revision of this group.

Laimosemion is a genus of small South American rivulines distributed across the Guianas, Venezuela, and the northern Amazon basin. The group is characterised by a plesiomorphic, generalised rivuline body plan, non-annual reproduction, and occupation of shaded forest streams — ecological traits shared with Anablepsoides xanthonotus. The genus sits within a broader assemblage of non-annual South American killies that have historically been shuffled between Rivulus, Anablepsoides, and several smaller segregate genera as morphological and molecular data have accumulated.

This fish was long listed as Laimosemion xanthonotus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Anablepsoides, and the current combination Anablepsoides xanthonotus is followed here.

Morphology

Anablepsoides xanthonotus is a slender, moderately elongate killifish reaching a maximum recorded total length of 3 in, though most individuals encountered in the wild are likely smaller. The body shape is typical of non-annual rivulines: laterally compressed with a rounded caudal fin, a slightly upturned mouth positioned for surface or near-surface feeding, and relatively large eyes.

The species' most distinctive feature is the yellowish to golden-yellow suffusion of the dorsal surface — back and upper flanks — from which the scientific name is drawn. The base body colouration is otherwise brownish or olive, often with faint iridescent scales on the flanks. Males typically show brighter and more defined colouration than females, which are generally plainer and may appear more uniformly brown or olive. Specific pigment patterns such as spot rows, vermiculations, or bar markings are not detailed in the available literature, and the full chromatic description awaits formal revision.

Habitat

Anablepsoides xanthonotus is a benthic to near-benthic species of the Amazon basin in Brazil. Feeding

Like most small rivuline killies, Anablepsoides xanthonotus is presumed to be a generalist micropredator in the wild, feeding on small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and other zooplankton-scale prey — that it encounters along the substrate and at the water surface. The upturned mouth configuration typical of the genus facilitates the capture of prey at or just below the water film.

In the aquarium, small non-annual rivulines of this group are generally straightforward to feed, accepting live and frozen prey such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Cyclops, micro-worms, and bloodworm. Varied live and frozen foods maintain colour and condition and support reproductive behaviour. Prepared micro-pellets may be accepted by established fish, but meaty live or frozen prey should form the bulk of the diet.

Mating

As a non-annual killifish, Anablepsoides xanthonotus spawns not in a single season-triggered event but on a more or less continuous basis throughout the year, provided water quality and feeding remain adequate. The species is a plant or mop spawner: pairs deposit small batches of adhesive eggs individually onto fine-leaved aquatic plants, roots, filamentous algae, or synthetic spawning mops near the substrate or along the water column over days and weeks.

In typical rivuline fashion, the male courts the female with lateral displays and colour intensification. Pairs spawn in brief side-by-side embraces at the chosen plant or mop surface, releasing one or a small number of eggs per embrace. Eggs are deposited over extended periods rather than in a single mass release, and both sexes may spawn with multiple partners in a community setting. The eggs are small, adhesive, and relatively resistant to fungal infection compared with annual species.

Breeding

Eggs deposited on plants or spawning mops incubate in water at the ambient temperature — there is no diapause, no buried peat phase, and no requirement for a dry period. At 73–77 °F, incubation typically spans two to four weeks for non-annual South American rivulines of similar size, after which fry hatch as miniature but fully formed juveniles capable of taking Artemia nauplii immediately.

In the aquarium, the most practical breeding method is the regular harvesting of mops or plant clumps to a separate, covered incubation container. Adults will consume eggs and fry if they encounter them. Once fry hatch, they grow relatively quickly with regular small feedings. Because FishBase notes this species is not easily maintained in the aquarium, hobbyist documentation of captive breeding is sparse, and details of clutch size and specific incubation times for this species in particular remain poorly recorded in accessible sources.

In the aquarium

Anablepsoides xanthonotus is described by FishBase as difficult to maintain in the aquarium (reference 27139), which likely reflects the sensitivity of non-annual Amazonian rivulines to water quality, particularly dissolved oxygen, temperature stability, and absence of organic pollutants. A small, species-dedicated tank of 11–16 US gal is appropriate, densely planted or equipped with spawning mops, a tight-fitting lid (killies are accomplished jumpers), and gentle filtration that does not generate strong current.

Water parameters should replicate the soft, near-neutral Amazonian conditions from which this species comes: pH around 6.5–7.0, moderate softness (hardness below 10 dH), and temperature held steadily between 22 and 77 °F. This is not a beginner's fish — stable water chemistry, attentive maintenance, and a varied live food diet are prerequisites. Given the species' Endangered status and restricted range, captive populations kept by specialist hobbyists could have conservation relevance if managed as a documented collection rather than casual stock.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Anablepsoides xanthonotus (as Anablepsoides xanthonotus) as Endangered in December 2020, applying criterion B1ab(iii) — meaning its extent of occurrence is estimated to be under 5,0 mi², the range is severely fragmented or restricted to a small number of locations, and there is a continuing decline in the area, extent, or quality of its habitat. The assessment date is 10 December 2020.

The primary threats driving this status are habitat loss and degradation in the Amazon basin: deforestation for agriculture and cattle ranching, logging operations, and associated siltation and warming of forest streams all diminish the shaded, cool, clean-water microhabitats on which this and other forest rivulines depend. The species' restricted range within the Amazon basin means that localised degradation can eliminate populations entirely. Unlike the more charismatic Amazonian megafauna, small endemic killies rarely attract dedicated conservation programmes, and the monitoring of population trends for species like A. xanthonotus remains limited. Its maintenance in specialist killifish collections represents one of the few practical conservation safety nets available.
