Taxonomy & naming
Aphaniops stiassnyae was described by Abebe Getahun and Kenneth J. Lazara in 2001, published in Copeia (volume 2001, no. 1, pp. 150–153). The original description was based on a type series of just two females — a holotype and a single paratype — collected from the southwestern shore of Lake Afdera in the Afar Region of Ethiopia, at approximately 13°10'N, 40°50'E, at a depth of 80 metres below sea level where hot springs join the saline lake waters. The original genus placement was Lebias, a name with a complex synonymy in Old World toothcarp taxonomy; subsequent treatments have placed the species in Aphanius, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong).
The American Killifish Association has indexed the species under the combination Aphaniops stiassnyae, reflecting ongoing generic-level instability within the family Aphaniidae as molecular phylogenies continue to refine the boundaries between Aphanius, Aphaniops, and allied genera. The Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for valid nomenclature, and the combination recorded there is used here. The paucity of the type series — females only, no males, no juveniles — means that several characters routinely used in Aphanius taxonomy (male colouration, finnage pattern, tooth count) remain undescribed, and the species' placement within the genus rests on a narrower morphological diagnosis than is typical for the family.
The species is named in honour of Melanie L.J. Stiassny, the ichthyologist celebrated for her work on the freshwater fish faunas of Africa and whose contributions to African cichlid and killifish systematics have been substantial.

Morphology
The formal description of Aphaniops stiassnyae rests on two female specimens, limiting what can be said with certainty about the species' morphology across sexes. The type series gives a maximum recorded length of 3 in standard length — unusually large for the genus, where most species cap out at 2–2.4 in SL. This figure derives from FishBase, which cites the original description; because the type series comprised females only, whether males approach this size or are smaller (as is typical of sexually dimorphic Aphanius) is unrecorded.
In the Aphanius genus, females are generally larger and cryptically coloured, while males bear the vertical barring, metallic iridescence, and coloured finnage characteristic of the group. By analogy with congeners, the females of A. stiassnyae can be expected to be brownish or olive, with indistinct mottling or faint barring on the flanks, multicuspidate teeth arranged in multiple rows, an upturned mouth suited to surface-skimming, and moderately large scales — but no published description of the male plumage exists. The teeth in Aphanius are multicuspidate, allowing the fish to crop algae and process small crustaceans, worms, and insect larvae in its natural habitat. Without a description of breeding males, the diagnostic colouration and fin pattern remain a gap in the species' known morphology.
Habitat
Lake Afdera is a highly saline, geothermally influenced lake in the Afar Depression of northern Ethiopia, one of the world's most geologically active rift zones. The lake sits approximately 80 metres below sea level in a tectonic basin, and is fed by a combination of surface runoff and hot springs discharging from the floor and margins of the lake. The spring waters are markedly warmer than the ambient lake body, and the zone where they mix — along the southwestern shore, the type locality — creates a mosaic of temperatures and salinities that constitutes the known habitat of Aphaniops stiassnyae.
The IUCN assessment and original description both identify this spring-lake transition as the species' sole confirmed locality. Water chemistry at the type locality is harsh by most freshwater standards: the lake is brackish to saline, alkaline, and thermally elevated by geothermal input. FishBase records an ambient water temperature of approximately 68 °F, but the geothermal springs are considerably warmer, and the fish likely occupies a thermocline across a broad range. The pH recorded for the species is approximately 7.5, reflecting the alkaline character of geothermally influenced springs in carbonate-rich rift terrain.
The Afar Depression is one of the most inhospitable regions on earth for most organisms, but its geothermal springs harbour a disproportionate diversity of endemic microbes, invertebrates, and a small number of highly specialised vertebrates. A. stiassnyae appears to be the only killifish — and possibly the only fish of any kind — able to persist in the specific conditions of Lake Afdera's spring discharge zones.
Feeding
FishBase lists Aphaniops stiassnyae as omnivorous — a dietary classification consistent with the genus Aphanius as a whole, whose members are known to consume aquatic invertebrates (copepods, chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, worms) alongside algae and detritus in the saline and brackish habitats they occupy. Nothing specific to the diet of this species in the wild has been published; the type series was collected from the shoreline spring-discharge zone of Lake Afdera, an environment that, despite its extreme chemistry, likely supports microbial mats, filamentous algae, and small invertebrate communities in the areas where spring water dilutes and cools the saline lake water.
By analogy with the Mediterranean Aphanius species, the multicuspidate dentition of the genus enables a mixed strategy: cropping algal films and microbial mats with the outer tooth rows while processing small crustaceans and invertebrate larvae with the inner rows and strong jaw musculature. In captivity, were specimens available, the feeding regime appropriate for the genus — live and frozen daphnia, artemia, chironomid larvae, and algal-based foods — would be expected to maintain the fish in good condition.
Mating
No observations of the mating behaviour of Aphaniops stiassnyae have been published. The type series comprised only females, and the species has not been maintained in captivity to any documented extent. Reproductive behaviour must therefore be inferred from the genus Aphanius, all members of which are non-annual killifish: they inhabit permanent or near-permanent water bodies, and their eggs are laid on vegetation, algal mats, fine substrate, or artificial spawning mops and develop without diapause — unlike the soil-burying annual killifish of seasonal African and South American savannahs.
In other Aphanius species, males court females with lateral displays, spreading the dorsal and caudal fins to show the vertical barring pattern at its fullest extent. Pair spawning is the norm, with the male aligning alongside or curving around the female as adhesive eggs are deposited individually on fine-leaved plants or filamentous algae. Given the extreme isolation of Lake Afdera's spring zone, it is possible that the local population of A. stiassnyae exhibits adaptations to the specific substrate available — microbial mats, rocky margins, sparse aquatic vegetation — rather than the rooted macrophyte beds used by Mediterranean congeners, but this is speculation in the absence of direct observation.
Breeding
No breeding data specific to Aphaniops stiassnyae exists in the published literature. The species has not been kept or bred in captivity, and the original description does not address reproductive biology beyond recording that only females were collected at the type locality. Whether this reflects a genuine sex-ratio skew, seasonal segregation of the sexes, or simply the small sample size of the type series is unknown.
For aquarists or field biologists who might encounter or maintain this species in the future, the reproductive mode applicable to the genus provides the working template: non-annual plant- or mop-spawning, with adhesive eggs deposited over an extended season and incubated in water at ambient temperatures without a dry-season diapause phase. Eggs of Mediterranean Aphanius typically hatch in 10–15 days at temperatures of 68–79 °F. Given the geothermally elevated conditions of Lake Afdera's spring zone, the development rate in nature could be faster if the fish spawns in warmer water closer to the spring vents. These are, however, extrapolations from congeners; the breeding biology of A. stiassnyae remains an open research question.
In the aquarium
Aphaniops stiassnyae is not known to be established in the aquarium hobby. The species has been collected only once — the two-female type series in 2001 — and no subsequent aquarium importation or captive breeding has been documented. This is consistent with its remote and inhospitable type locality in the Afar Region of Ethiopia, where the extreme salinity and geothermal conditions of Lake Afdera would make live-fish collection and transport challenging.
Should specimens ever become available to specialist killifish keepers, the care requirements of the genus Aphanius provide the nearest model. Hard, alkaline water with significant salt tolerance is essential — not the soft, acidic conditions of South American and West African killifish, but alkaline, mineral-rich water with 2–5 g/L marine salt reflecting the brackish-saline conditions of the natural habitat. A temperature in the range of 68–82 °F is likely appropriate, though the geothermal spring character of the type locality suggests the upper end of this range may be better tolerated than the cooler end. Fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops would serve as spawning substrate if the species follows the Aphanius pattern of adhesive plant-spawning. The pronounced sexual dimorphism known in related species means that males, if obtained, would likely display vibrant barring that has never been described or photographed in A. stiassnyae.
Given the Endangered status of the species and its highly restricted single-locality range, any future captive holding should prioritise documentation of morphology — especially the male — and if possible the establishment of a managed ex situ population in coordination with Ethiopian conservation authorities.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphaniops stiassnyae as Endangered (EN) in 2009. The listing reflects the species' extreme range restriction: it is known from a single locality, the spring-discharge zone of Lake Afdera in the Afar Region of Ethiopia, and its entire global population exists within that narrow habitat band where geothermal springs meet the saline lake waters. Any event that alters the hydrology of Lake Afdera — changes to spring flow, lake-level fluctuation, increased extraction of spring water — would directly threaten the only population known to science.
The IUCN assessment identifies three categories of threat: residential and commercial development, energy production and mining, and geological events. The Afar Depression is geologically active and economically significant; geothermal energy extraction and mineral exploitation are potential sources of disruption to the spring systems that constitute the species' habitat. The region has historically been difficult to access, which has provided inadvertent protection, but increasing infrastructure development in the Afar Region brings new risks of habitat disturbance.
Conservation needs identified in the IUCN assessment include the enactment of protective legislation specific to the species and its habitat, and active restoration or safeguarding of the Lake Afdera spring zone. The species has not been recorded since the type collection in 2001, and its current population status is unknown. A targeted field survey to confirm the persistence of the population, assess its size, and document the still-undescribed male of the species would be a meaningful first step — both for its conservation and for completing the basic biological picture of one of Africa's most enigmatic killifish.
