Cypholebias robustus is a small annual killifish endemic to the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, where it inhabits the ephemeral seasonal pools and flooded grasslands of its restricted type locality. Like all members of the genus Austrolebias, it is an obligate annual species whose entire life cycle is calibrated to the rhythm of fill and desiccation: adults spawn into the soft substrate before the dry season claims the pool, and their buried eggs pass the drought in a state of arrested development, hatching only when rains return. Reaching roughly 4–5 cm standard length and preferring cool, soft, acidic water, this little Pampas killi has attracted a modest following among specialist hobbyists drawn to the genus's striking sexual dichromatism and the fascinating annual breeding method it demands in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Cypholebias robustus was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa and Marcelo M. Cheffe in 2005. The genus Austrolebias belongs to the family Rivulidae (South American killifishes) and encompasses the annual killifish of the Pampas and Chaco regions of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil — a biogeographically coherent radiation of seasonal-pool specialists. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Cypholebias robustus (Costa & Cheffe, 2005), and the authority is presented in parentheses, indicating the name has not been moved since its original placement but following the convention used for the genus.

The species epithet nonoiuliensis is a toponym — a name derived from the type locality, the stream pools in the vicinity of Nonoiuliensis in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The genus name Austrolebias combines the Latin australis (southern) with the Greek lebias, a historical term applied to small killifish-like fishes, signalling both the Southern Hemisphere distribution and the family affinities of the group. Costa has been the primary author behind the modern revision of South American annual killifishes, and the 2005 description of this species falls within an active period of taxonomic clarification for Rivulidae.

This fish was long listed as Austrolebias nonoiuliensis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats that name as a synonym of Cypholebias robustus, the valid name followed here.

Morphology

Cypholebias robustus is a small fish, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of approximately 1.6–2 in. In body plan it follows the typical Austrolebias template: a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, a slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface and near-surface feeding, and the strongly dichromatic colouration that characterises males of the genus. Males display vivid iridescent patterning — typically blue-green or blue-grey flanks with dark barring or reticulation — while females are cryptic, brownish-olive with variable spotting, a pattern that affords camouflage in the leaf-litter and detritus of the pools they inhabit.

The fins of males are often elaborately coloured, with the unpaired fins extending the body patterning in bands or ocellate spots. Females have shorter, plainer fins. The size difference between sexes is modest; both are small animals by any measure, and the compressed, deep-bodied shape — shared across the genus — is well suited to navigating the shallow, weed-choked margins of temporary pools. The caudal fin is rounded, the dorsal and anal fins are set well back on the body and are roughly symmetrical in position, another diagnostic feature of the Rivulidae.

Habitat

Cypholebias robustus is known from Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, where it occupies temporary pools and seasonally flooded areas within the subtropical grassland and savanna landscape of the Pampas. These pools form during the wet season — typically autumn and winter in this subtropical latitude — and dry out completely during the warmer dry months, leaving no permanent water body for fish to persist in. The substrate is typically soft mud, peat, or detritus-rich sediment into which the fish can spawn.

Water chemistry in these seasonal systems tends toward the soft and acidic end of the spectrum, consistent with the FishBase data for this species: pH 5.5–6.5, low to moderate hardness, and temperatures in the cool range of approximately 68–75 °F. Rio Grande do Sul experiences genuine cool winters, and Austrolebias species from the region are adapted to temperatures that would stress more tropical killies. The temporary nature of these pools means there are no large predatory fish to contend with during most of the season, though wading birds, invertebrates, and amphibian larvae can exert predation pressure.

Feeding

Cypholebias robustus is a carnivore, as are all members of the genus. In the wild, temporary Pampas pools are rich in small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae (chironomids, mosquito larvae, daphnia, ostracods), small worms, and other microcrustaceans — and these form the primary diet. The upturned mouth is well adapted for snatching prey at or near the surface, and the fish will also take prey from the mid-water and substrate. Cannibalism of smaller conspecifics and fry can occur when food is scarce, which is ecologically relevant in the dense, temporary pools of this region.

In captivity the species accepts a broad range of live and frozen invertebrate foods: daphnia, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), white worm, grindal worm, and blackworm are all suitable. Dry foods may be accepted over time but should not form the dietary basis for a fish accustomed to live prey. Regular, varied feeding with appropriately sized invertebrate items maintains condition and supports the colour intensity of males.

Mating

As an annual Austrolebias species, C. robustus follows the substrate-spawning reproductive mode universal in the genus. Courtship is conducted by the male, whose brilliant iridescent livery functions as a visual signal to females and as a competitive display to rival males. Males will pursue females actively and display laterally, fanning their fins to show full colouration. A receptive female is led by the male to the substrate — typically the softest, most detritus-rich area of the pool bottom — where the spawning act takes place.

The pair dive into the substrate together in a characteristic embrace, the male wrapping around the female, and eggs are deposited several centimetres below the surface. Each dive typically results in the fertilisation and burial of one to a few eggs. The pair surfaces and may repeat the dive many times across a spawning session. This behaviour is not optional or incidental — the burial of eggs in the substrate is the mechanism that protects them from desiccation as the pool dries, and it is the defining feature of the annual life-history strategy.

Breeding

The eggs of Cypholebias robustus are drought-resistant, desiccation-tolerant structures that enter diapause — a state of suspended development — when the pool dries. In nature, the adults die as desiccation progresses through the late wet season and early dry season; the eggs remain buried in the moist substrate and progress through their developmental programme on a timescale measured in months, not days. Hatching is triggered by rewetting when the rains return, and the fry must grow to sexual maturity and reproduce before the next dry season eliminates the pool again, typically within six to eight months.

In the aquarium, hobbyists replicate this biology using a peat or coconut-coir substrate spawning medium. After a spawning period of several weeks, the substrate is removed, gently squeezed to remove excess water, and stored in a sealed bag or container at room temperature — mimicking the dry season in the soil. The incubation period varies but is typically two to four months before rewetting is attempted; some populations or individual clutches benefit from longer storage. Rewetting the peat with soft, slightly acidic water triggers hatching within hours to days. Fry are large enough at hatching to accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii immediately, and growth is rapid. Because the entire cohort hatches close together, size grading may be necessary to prevent cannibalism among fry of different sizes.

Aquarium water for this cool-adapted Pampas species should be kept in the range of 68–75 °F; temperatures above 79 °F shorten the lifespan of a fish already calibrated to live less than a year. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 5.5–6.5) matches the natural conditions documented for Rio Grande do Sul populations.

In the aquarium

Cypholebias robustus is kept almost exclusively by specialist killifish hobbyists, principally those with an interest in South American annuals and the genus Austrolebias. It is not a fish for community tanks: males are territorial and will fight, and the species' temperature and water chemistry requirements are specific enough that mixing with tropical community fish is impractical. A dedicated species tank or a pairing with one or two females per male is the standard approach.

Tank size can be modest — a 11–16 US gal aquarium is sufficient for a pair or a trio — but the setup requires thought. A soft, deep substrate (peat, fine sand mixed with coir, or a commercial substrate spawning tray) is essential for natural spawning behaviour. Floating plants or surface cover provide security. Filtration should be gentle, as these fish come from still or very slow-moving seasonal pools; a small sponge filter is appropriate. Hiding spots reduce stress in females, which can be harassed by persistent males.

The appeal of this and related Austrolebias species for the specialist lies in the vivid male colouration, the intellectually engaging annual breeding cycle, and the satisfaction of timing the diapause correctly and achieving successful hatchings. The short lifespan is both a challenge and part of the biology: a well-maintained pair completing a full breeding cycle within a single season is a rewarding outcome. The species is maintained by killifish clubs and societies in Brazil and internationally, where peat spawning collections are exchanged between enthusiasts.

Conservation

No formal IUCN Red List assessment has been located for Cypholebias robustus; the species is recorded as Not Evaluated (NE). This is not unusual for the genus: many South American annual killifishes, particularly those from the Pampas and southern Brazilian highlands, have not been formally assessed despite being geographically restricted and ecologically vulnerable. The restricted known range in Rio Grande do Sul and dependence on intact seasonal pool habitats place the species in a precarious position relative to land-use change.

The principal threats to annual killies of this region are the drainage, conversion, and infilling of seasonal wetlands for agriculture and infrastructure. The subtropical grasslands of Rio Grande do Sul have experienced substantial agricultural intensification over recent decades — soy cultivation, cattle pasture management, and irrigated rice production all alter the hydrology of floodplains and seasonal depressions that annual killies depend upon. Introduction of exotic mosquitofish (Gambusia) and other small predatory exotics into seasonal pools is an additional pressure documented for Austrolebias species across the region. Because the entire population of any annual killi pool exists as buried eggs during the dry season, a single drainage event or agricultural disturbance during that period can eliminate a local population permanently.

Conservation of C. robustus depends on the persistence of intact seasonal grassland pools in Rio Grande do Sul and on formal assessment of its status and range. The killifish hobbyist community maintains an informal captive reservoir of many Austrolebias species, and peat-spawning exchanges through killifish clubs have preserved genetic material for species that may be reduced or extirpated in the wild — a role the hobby has played for other highly threatened members of the genus.
