Gymnolebias gymnoventris was described by Amato in 1986, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Gymnolebias gymnoventris (Amato, 1986). The authority is presented in parentheses because the species was originally placed in a different genus before being moved to Austrolebias. The type locality is Arroyo India Muerta Creek, near Route 13 close to Velázquez, Rocha Department, eastern Uruguay.
Austrolebias is a large genus of South American annual killifishes within the family Rivulidae, concentrated in the subtropical drainage basins of the Pampas and Chaco — the Laguna dos Patos system, the Río de la Plata basin, and the upper Paraná. The genus contains some of the largest annual killifishes in the world as well as many diminutive species adapted to the flat, seasonally flooded grasslands of southern South America. Gymnoventris is a mid-sized representative of the group.
The specific epithet gymnoventris derives from the Greek gymnos (naked or bare) and the Latin venter (belly), referring to a reduced or unscaled ventral surface — a morphological character distinguishing it from related species in the genus. The name was applied by Amato on the basis of specimens from the Rocha Department pools.
This fish was long listed as Austrolebias gymnoventris; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Gymnolebias, and the current combination Gymnolebias gymnoventris is followed here.
Morphology
Gymnolebias gymnoventris reaches a maximum total length of approximately 2–2.4 in, with the upper figure reported by It Rains Fishes on the basis of meristic data. As is typical across Austrolebias, males are substantially more colourful than females. Males display the rich lateral patterning characteristic of the genus — iridescent blue-green to turquoise flanks overlaid with a pattern of spots or bars in darker pigment, the precise pattern varying among individuals. Fins are typically coloured, with the dorsal and anal fins bearing extension and pigmentation not seen in the female.
Females are cryptic, with a muted brown or olive-beige colouration and less-defined markings — a pattern that affords camouflage against the leaf litter and mud of the pool floor when the male is not present. The body form is typical for the genus: robust, somewhat laterally compressed, with a rounded head and an upturned mouth adapted to surface feeding.
The reduced ventral squamation that gives the species its name is a subtle but diagnostically useful feature distinguishing it from related Austrolebias congeners. As with most annual killifishes, the difference in size and colouration between the sexes is pronounced enough that males and females could be mistaken for different species by an unfamiliar observer.
Habitat
Gymnolebias gymnoventris is native to the Laguna dos Patos basin of eastern Uruguay, occurring in temporary pools near Lascano and Castello as well as the type locality near Velázquez in Rocha Department. These are shallow, seasonal depressions set within subtropical grassland and agricultural landscapes — pools that fill with winter and spring rains, persist for a few months as productive, insect-rich wetlands, and then dry completely as summer arrives.
The pools are typically shallow, warm, and turbid, with soft mud and peat-like substrates rich in decomposing organic matter. Water chemistry in these environments can be variable: FishBase records conditions of approximately 75 °F and pH 7 at 5 dGH hardness, suggesting moderately soft, near-neutral water rather than extreme acidity. The surrounding vegetation — grasses, sedges, and scattered woody shrubs — contributes leaf litter and detritus that shade the pools and enrich the substrate where eggs will be deposited.
The key ecological feature of the habitat is its impermanence. The entire life cycle of gymnoventris is timed around this seasonality: wild fish are known to live 8–11 months depending on temperature and water availability, with some populations in cooler southern localities persisting longer than those in warmer northern sites.
Feeding
Gymnolebias gymnoventris is a carnivore, as are all Austrolebias species. In the temporary pools where it lives, the diet is composed primarily of small invertebrates: aquatic insect larvae (particularly chironomid midge larvae and mosquito larvae), microcrustaceans such as daphnia and ostracods, and small worms. The upturned mouth is well suited to taking prey from the water surface as well as from mid-water, and the fish is an active, visual predator that responds readily to movement.
In the aquarium, gymnoventris strongly prefers live food, particularly when first established. It Rains Fishes notes that the species is slow to accept dry foods, and many hobbyists maintain cultures of daphnia, mosquito larvae (where legal), tubifex, and white worms (Enchytraeus) specifically to feed Austrolebias. Artemia nauplii are a useful supplement, especially for conditioning adults ahead of spawning. A diet composed predominantly of live and frozen meaty foods produces the best colouration in males and the best egg production in females.
Mating
Gymnolebias gymnoventris follows the mating system common to annual killifishes of the Rivulidae. Males are polygamous and actively court females with displays that involve lateral presentation, spread fins, and the flashing of iridescent flanks. Rival males are chased vigorously but overt fighting is uncommon in well-furnished aquaria; in the confined conditions of a temporary pool, hierarchies form quickly.
Spawning is initiated when a receptive female approaches the spawning substrate. The pair aligns side by side, with the male curving his body around the female in a brief lateral embrace. At the moment of embrace, both fish plunge headfirst into the soft substrate — a distinctive and unmistakable behaviour in which male and female submerge entirely into peat, sand, or coir — releasing eggs and sperm into the substrate material before surfacing. A single spawning session involves multiple such dives. Spawning begins very early in life: It Rains Fishes records that gymnoventris may begin reproducing at 5–6 weeks of age, reflecting the evolutionary pressure to complete reproduction as quickly as possible in a shrinking pool.
Breeding
The eggs of Gymnolebias gymnoventris are deposited directly into the substrate and undergo obligate diapause — a form of arrested embryonic development that allows the egg to survive the complete desiccation of its environment for months at a time. In nature, the eggs remain buried in the dried mud throughout the dry season, protected from desiccation by their tough chorion and by the insulating layer of soil and organic matter above them. When rains return and the pool refills, the eggs hatch and the new generation completes the cycle.
It Rains Fishes records an incubation period of approximately 6 weeks at around 77 °F, extending to 5–6 months when eggs are stored at cooler temperatures — a useful feature for the hobbyist managing a dry-storage programme. In the aquarium, the species is bred using peat moss or coconut-coir spawning medium laid 2–3.1 in deep on the aquarium floor. After a spawning period of several weeks, the peat is removed, lightly squeezed, placed in a sealed plastic bag, and stored in darkness at 68–75 °F for the incubation period. Re-wetting the peat over a shallow tray of soft, slightly acidic water triggers hatching, which typically occurs within hours of flooding. Fry are large for killifish and can take newly hatched Artemia nauplii almost immediately; growth to sexual maturity takes only a few weeks under good conditions.
The preferred breeding temperature range is 64–75 °F; warmer conditions accelerate development but may reduce egg viability and adult lifespan. Cooler temperatures — approximating the Uruguayan winter — produce the most robust breeding performance.
In the aquarium
Gymnolebias gymnoventris is maintained primarily by specialist killifish hobbyists and breeders. It is not a commonly traded species in the general aquarium hobby, and most specimens in the hobby circulate through killifish societies and dedicated breeders. A species tank or a small biotope setup is strongly recommended: males are aggressive toward one another, and any non-annual fish kept alongside them may be intimidated or outcompeted for food.
A tank of 11–16 US gal is adequate for a breeding trio (one male, two females). The essential requirement is a deep layer of fine peat or coconut coir on the floor — at least 2 in — into which the fish can dive to spawn. Floating plants or surface cover reduces stress, as the fish prefer subdued lighting. Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–7.2), moderately cool (64–75 °F), and well-maintained; despite the species' adaptation to variable wild conditions, clean water with low nitrate is necessary for good colouration and long-term health.
Live food should form the majority of the diet. Because the lifespan is short — wild fish often live only 8–11 months, and even well-kept aquarium specimens rarely exceed 18 months — breeders routinely maintain spawning programmes running continuously, refreshing the fish from stored eggs. The species rewards patient management: regular peat harvesting, careful dry-storage, and timed re-wetting produce steady hatches that keep a collection going across multiple dry seasons. For the dedicated annual-killifish enthusiast, gymnoventris is an accessible and rewarding representative of a biologically fascinating group.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Gymnolebias gymnoventris as Endangered (EN) in February 2021 under criteria B2ab(i,ii,iii), indicating a restricted area of occupancy combined with continuing decline in the extent of occurrence, area of occupancy, and quality of habitat. The species is confined to a small number of seasonal pool systems in eastern Uruguay — principally in Rocha and the Laguna dos Patos drainage — and its entire global range is encompassed within a landscape undergoing rapid agricultural intensification.
The principal threat is habitat loss through drainage. The seasonal pools that gymnoventris depends on are not valued as wetlands in conventional land-use frameworks; they are drained for pasture improvement and crop farming, or simply dry faster than they once did as surrounding vegetation is cleared and water tables fall. Introduced mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) have been widely released across South America and are known to compete with and predate upon annual killifish in pools where the two co-occur. Urban and road development near Lascano and Velázquez has also affected some localities.
Conservation of Gymnolebias gymnoventris and its relatives ultimately depends on the protection of temporary wetland complexes within the Uruguayan Pampas — habitats that have no charismatic megafauna or productive fishery value to motivate their preservation. The species is maintained in captivity by killifish societies in Uruguay, Argentina, and Europe, and the dried-egg storage method makes ex situ conservation practical: a colony occupying a few square metres of shelf space can preserve genetic diversity across multiple annual cycles. Coordination between hobbyist networks and Uruguayan conservation bodies represents the most realistic near-term safety net for this Endangered fish.
