Hellner's annual killifish is a small, seasonally brilliant species from the São Francisco River basin of Minas Gerais, Brazil — a region of central Brazil where the cerrado savanna meets a network of temporary pools that fill with the summer rains and vanish entirely in the dry season. The species belongs to a genus whose taxonomy has been revised repeatedly in recent decades, variously placed in Simpsonichthys, Hypsolebias, and Moema depending on the authority consulted. It is Endangered under IUCN criteria, its highly restricted range limited to just a handful of known collection localities in Minas Gerais, all under pressure from agricultural expansion, water abstraction, and habitat degradation in the cerrado.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa and Giovana T. Brasil in 1990, the authority therefore presented in parentheses — indicating the combination has since changed — as (Costa & Brasil, 1990). The original placement was in the genus Simpsonichthys, but subsequent phylogenetic revisions have proposed reassignment. The American Killifish Association and FishBase both treat the valid current name as Hypsolebias hellneri, while some sources use Moema hellneri; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid combination and should be consulted for the current treatment. The slug simpsonichthys-hellneri persists in the killifish hobby, reflecting the original description and the name under which the species was long traded.

The specific epithet hellneri honours an individual surnamed Hellner, consistent with the longstanding killi-hobby tradition of naming new species after collectors, enthusiasts, or persons who assisted in field work. The genus Simpsonichthys (in its traditional sense) is named after the British aquarist Rodney Simpson, a prominent figure in the history of annual killifish keeping in the UK.

The broader genus complex — Simpsonichthys, Hypsolebias, Ophthalmolebias, Spectrolebias, Stenolebias, and Xenurolebias — represents a radiation of South American annual killifishes in the seasonal pools of Brazil's interior drainages. The systematics of this group have been actively revised since the 1990s. The American Killifish Association places hellneri in its Class 3 (South American Annuals) for competitive judging purposes.

This fish was long listed as Simpsonichthys hellneri; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Hypsolebias, and the current combination Hypsolebias hellneri is followed here.

Morphology

Like other members of the Simpsonichthys/Hypsolebias complex, this is a small-bodied, laterally compressed annual killifish adapted for life in shallow, often turbid temporary pools. The body shape is typical of the group: a rounded snout, upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding, moderately large eyes, and a relatively deep body tapering to a rounded caudal fin. Males are considerably more colourful than females — the norm in annual South American killifishes — displaying iridescent patterning on the flanks and unpaired fins during the breeding season. Females are cryptically coloured, with a plainer, brownish or olive body that provides camouflage among leaf litter and detritus.

Detailed meristic data for this species are sparse in accessible hobbyist literature. Body size falls within the typical range for the genus; the species is kept and shown by AKA members, consistent with a compact, manageable fish well under 2 in standard length for both sexes. The caudal fin in males may show extension or colouration that is diagnostically useful, though a full morphological comparison with congeners is not available from the sources at hand.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, within the São Francisco River basin. The type locality, recorded by PlanetCatfish and the AKA, is a pond situated alongside the road from Manga to Itacarambi, approximately 7 mi before the town of Itacarambi in northern Minas Gerais. The AKA records four collection localities in Minas Gerais, all within a restricted area of this semi-arid to sub-humid cerrado landscape.

The cerrado is Brazil's interior savanna — a seasonally dry biome characterised by a pronounced dry season during which the shallow pools and low-lying wetland depressions that annual killifishes inhabit evaporate completely. The pools refill with the summer rainy season (roughly October–March), triggering hatching, rapid growth, spawning, and the deposition of the next generation of diapausing eggs before the habitat disappears again. Water chemistry in these temporary pools reflects the underlying geology: the killi.co.uk profile records pH 7.5 and hardness of 10 dGH, suggesting moderately soft, near-neutral water typical of cerrado pools underlain by sandy or laterite soils rather than limestone. Temperature in the profile is given as 78 °F, consistent with the warm lowland conditions of Minas Gerais.

The highly localised distribution — a small cluster of sites in a single river sub-basin — makes this species extremely vulnerable to any habitat change or development in its restricted range.

Feeding

Annual killifishes of the Simpsonichthys/Hypsolebias complex are micro-predators in the wild, exploiting the dense invertebrate community that blooms rapidly in temporary pools following inundation. The diet consists primarily of small aquatic invertebrates — copepods, cladocerans, midge larvae, worms, and similar organisms — and probably extends to surface insects and zooplankton in season. The upturned mouth is adapted for feeding at the water surface and in the upper water column, where invertebrate prey is most concentrated in the early weeks of the pool's seasonal existence.

In captivity the species is maintained on live and frozen small invertebrates: Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, micro-worms, and similar foods form the staple diet. Dry foods may be accepted but should not be the sole component of the diet; condition and breeding success improve markedly with regular live or frozen food. Feeding rate needs to be managed in the aquarium given the short natural lifespan — fish should be in excellent nutritional condition at all times to maximise reproductive output during their brief adult phase.

Mating

Hellner's killifish follows the annual killifish reproductive pattern: males court females with intense colour display and lateral presentation, using the bright patterning of the flanks and fins as signal. Competition between males in overlapping territories is common, and in temporary pools with multiple males, the social hierarchy is established through visual and physical interactions.

Courting males approach females and display alongside them; if the female is receptive, the pair move toward the substrate. The defining character of South American annual killifish mating — and the feature that separates this ecological guild from plant-spawning killifishes — is that spawning occurs in physical contact with the substrate: the pair plunge together into the soft mud, peat, or fine detritus at the pool bottom, releasing eggs and sperm while briefly buried. Each dive deposits one or a small number of eggs, and the sequence is repeated across multiple dives over the course of a spawning session. The eggs are thus physically deposited within the substrate, protected from desiccation and predation during the dry season by the surrounding soil matrix.

Breeding

The eggs are drought-resistant and capable of surviving prolonged desiccation through a process of arrested embryonic development known as diapause. After the pool dries and the adult fish perish — as they do without exception in an annual species — the eggs lie dormant in the damp or dry substrate through the dry season, which may last several months. When the rains return and the pool refills, the eggs hatch within days to weeks, producing a new generation that must grow, mature, spawn, and complete the cycle before the pool dries again.

In the aquarium, the annual cycle is simulated using a peat or coconut coir spawning substrate. A layer of peat is placed in a container or tray in the breeding tank; the pair spawn in it over several sessions. The peat is then removed, lightly pressed or squeezed, sealed in a plastic bag labelled with the date, and stored in a warm, dark place for a period of two to four months (or longer if hatching does not occur immediately). The re-wetting process — adding aged soft water to the stored peat — triggers hatching. Fry are tiny and require infusoria or paramecia as first foods, graduating to Artemia nauplii within days as growth is rapid. As with all annual killifishes, the adult fish have a naturally short lifespan; most individuals will not survive beyond one to one and a half years even under optimal aquarium conditions, making consistent spawning record-keeping essential for the hobbyist who wishes to maintain the lineage.

In the aquarium

Hellner's killifish is a specialist's fish, held primarily by dedicated annual killifish hobbyists rather than the general aquarium trade. It is maintained and exhibited by American Killifish Association members under Class 3 (South American Annuals). A small, tightly covered aquarium is appropriate — a 8–16 US gal tank is sufficient for a pair or trio. The lid must be secure, as killifishes are active jumpers. Dark substrate and subdued lighting, with floating plants or a surface cover of Indian fern, help the fish feel secure and encourage spawning behaviour.

Water should be kept warm (around 75–79 °F), near-neutral to mildly acidic (pH around 7.0–7.5), and soft to moderately soft, consistent with the parameters recorded from its natural pools in Minas Gerais. Regular small water changes with aged, dechlorinated water are important. The species should not be mixed with boisterous or fin-nipping tankmates; a species-only setup or a pairing with small, peaceful co-inhabitants that do not compete with the killifish is advisable.

Because this is an Endangered species with a very restricted wild range, responsible captive husbandry — maintaining healthy breeding populations and exchanging eggs or juveniles through organised killi clubs and the AKA — has genuine conservation value as an insurance population. Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hellner's killifish as Endangered (EN) in 2018, the assessment conducted under the authority of the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) of Brazil. The assessment reflects the species' extremely restricted range — limited to a small cluster of localities in northern Minas Gerais — and the ongoing threats to cerrado seasonal pool habitats throughout the São Francisco basin.

The cerrado is one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots. Large-scale agricultural conversion, particularly soybean and cattle ranching expansion, has eliminated or degraded enormous areas of native cerrado vegetation. The temporary pools and seasonal wetlands that annual killifishes depend on are particularly vulnerable: they are often treated as wasteland suitable for drainage and conversion, are heavily affected by altered hydrology from surrounding land use, and receive run-off of agricultural chemicals. Water abstraction for irrigation and domestic use reduces the extent and duration of seasonal flooding, compressing or eliminating the annual killifish life cycle.

With only four known collection localities in Minas Gerais, any single land-use change event could eliminate a significant portion of the known population. The species has no protected range in any formally gazetted reserve based on available sources. Captive populations held by killifish hobbyists through networks such as the AKA represent an important but informal insurance against total loss, underlining the conservation significance of specialised killifish keeping as a practice.
