Taxonomy & naming
Kosswigichthys asquamatus was described by the Turkish zoologist Sözer in 1942 from material collected in Lake Hazar, southeastern Anatolia. For much of its nomenclatural history the species was placed in the monotypic genus Kosswigichthys, erected to accommodate its supposedly unique combination of characters; the American Killifish Association and older literature therefore refer to it under the synonym Kosswigichthys asquamatus. A further synonym, Lebias asquamatus, reflects early attempts to align it with the broadly defined Lebias assemblage used before the current Aphanius circumscription stabilised. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) now treats the valid combination as Kosswigichthys asquamatus (Sözer, 1942), placing it within the genus Aphanius alongside the other Old World tooth-carps of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern arid belt.
The genus name Aphanius derives from the Greek aphanēs, meaning 'obscure' or 'inconspicuous', a reference to the comparatively drab colouration of the group relative to more ornamental killifishes. The specific epithet asquamatus is Latin meaning 'without scales' or 'scaleless', which in practice refers to the reduced or irregular scalation that distinguishes this species from relatives — a feature notable enough for Sözer to encode it in the name. The parenthetical authority notation is not used here because the species has remained in the same generic combination as originally described by the convention adopted in the killifish literature, though some sources do parenthesise Sözer; Catalog of Fishes is the arbiter.

Morphology
Kosswigichthys asquamatus is a compact, deep-bodied killifish reaching a maximum of 1.6 in total length (FishBase), with Seriously Fish recording the practical adult size at 1.38–1.57 in. Like other Aphanius, the body is moderately laterally compressed, the head rounded and short-snouted, and the dorsal fin set far back, giving the fish a blunt-fronted silhouette characteristic of the genus.
The scalation is irregular and reduced in parts of the body — the defining character encoded in the species name — distinguishing it from the more uniformly scaled Aphanius species of Anatolia and Iran. Males in breeding condition display the banded patterning typical of the genus: alternating dark and pale vertical bars on the flanks, with the pale interspaces often showing a silvery or bluish iridescence. Females are generally larger-bodied, rounder in profile, and cryptically patterned with spotted or mottled flanks rather than the bold barring of males. Sexual dimorphism in size and colour is pronounced, as is typical across Aphanius.
Habitat
Lake Hazar occupies a tectonic basin in the eastern Taurus mountains of southeastern Anatolia at roughly 1,820 ft elevation, in Elazığ Province, Turkey. The lake is fed by springs and streams draining carbonate geology and holds water of exceptional hardness: Seriously Fish records 268 °dH with a pH of 8.3 and a chemistry dominated by magnesium chloride. These extreme ionic conditions — among the hardest encountered by any Aphanius — reflect the carbonate-rich bedrock and the high evaporation-to-input ratio of the semi-arid basin. Kosswigichthys asquamatus is the only killifish in the lake and shares the water with very few other native fish species.
FishBase records the temperature tolerance as 50–77 °F, consistent with the lake's montane setting, which produces cold winters and warm summers. The species is described as pelagic and schooling outside the breeding season, moving in open water rather than hugging littoral vegetation as many small killifishes do. This open-water habit is unusual for Aphanius and may reflect the limited availability of dense submerged macrophyte beds in the hard, alkaline water. The lake has experienced some water-level fluctuation due to hydroelectric operations on the Euphrates system, but assessors noted at the time of the 2013 IUCN evaluation that levels had stabilised.
Feeding
Kosswigichthys asquamatus is a micropredator in the wild, feeding on the small invertebrates available in the hard-water lake environment. Seriously Fish notes the diet encompasses crustaceans, worms, insect larvae, and zooplankton, with some algal material also consumed — a diet typical of the genus, which occupies a generalist insectivore-crustacivore niche across its range.
In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen foods readily: Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, bloodworm, and small chironomid larvae are all appropriate. Dried and prepared foods are generally taken once the fish has settled in. Variety is important for long-term condition, and because the lake water contains abundant phytoplankton and algae, some plant-based or spirulina-enriched foods are a useful supplement to the protein-rich base diet.
Mating
Kosswigichthys asquamatus is a non-annual killifish that inhabits permanent water and does not undergo the diapause-egg dormancy of soil-spawning annuals. Seriously Fish records that males form temporary territories during the breeding season, which extends from April through September in the lake — a protracted warm-water season corresponding to the species' fractional, extended spawning strategy.
Male colouration intensifies during courtship, with the barred flank pattern becoming more vivid and contrast-rich. Males pursue females through their held territories, performing lateral displays to advertise condition. Spawning pairs align briefly and the male wraps alongside the female during egg deposition. Eggs are attached to algae and fine-leaved substrates by adhesive filaments — a characteristic non-annual plant-spawner strategy — rather than buried in substrate. The protracted April–September window means spawning events are distributed across many weeks rather than concentrated in a single seasonal pulse.
Breeding
As a non-annual plant spawner, Kosswigichthys asquamatus deposits small batches of adhesive eggs over an extended period throughout the warm months. Eggs are attached individually by filaments to algal mats, submerged plant debris, or artificial mop substrates in the aquarium; there is no parental care after deposition. Incubation takes place in water with no diapause or drying period required — a fundamental contrast with the peat-spawning annual killifishes.
In aquarium practice, the eggs can be collected from spawning mops or fine-leaved plants and transferred to a separate hatching container. Water must be kept hard and alkaline to match the extreme chemistry of Lake Hazar; soft or acidic conditions stress both adults and eggs. Fry are small on hatching and require infusoria or very fine commercial fry foods initially, graduating to Artemia nauplii within the first week or two. FishBase notes that maintaining this species in captivity is considered difficult, likely because of the demanding water-chemistry requirements — replicating 268 °dH at pH 8.3 is not straightforward in most tap-water regions and requires significant mineralisation of prepared water.
In the aquarium
Kosswigichthys asquamatus presents one of the more demanding water-chemistry challenges among kept killifishes. The species requires hard, alkaline water — ideally pH 8.0–8.5 with very high total hardness — and should be maintained in water that approximates the magnesium-chloride-rich chemistry of Lake Hazar. For hobbyists with naturally soft tap water, achieving these conditions requires deliberate mineralisation with appropriate salts; calcium and magnesium supplements used for African cichlid or marine systems are a practical starting point.
The fish is small, relatively peaceful, and suited to a species tank of modest size — a well-filtered 16–21 US gal aquarium with hard alkaline water, a sand or fine gravel substrate, some algae growth on rocks, and spawning mops provides appropriate conditions. Cohabitation with other hard-water species of similar size is possible but the specialist water requirements tend to restrict natural pairing options. Temperature should track the lake's seasonal range: 64–75 °F is appropriate for most of the year, with a cooler winter period at 54–59 °F beneficial for conditioning and seasonal cycling.
The species is infrequently encountered in the hobby outside specialist killifish circles, partly because of the demanding water-chemistry requirements and partly because it lacks the bold colouration of some congeners. Hobbyists already keeping hard-water Aphanius species — such as the more widely kept A. mento or A. fasciatus — will find the husbandry broadly transferable, though the extreme hardness of Lake Hazar sets K. asquamatus apart even within the genus.
Conservation
Kosswigichthys asquamatus is endemic to a single body of water — Lake Hazar — which makes it inherently vulnerable to any disruption of that lake's ecology or hydrology. Despite this, the IUCN Red List assessed the species as Least Concern in 2013, with assessors noting that water levels in Lake Hazar had stabilised following earlier fluctuations linked to hydroelectric management on the Euphrates system downstream. The assessment carries a Red List ID of 11057.
The threats facing single-lake endemics in the Middle East are well established: water extraction for agriculture and urban use, pollution from expanding settlements and agricultural run-off, introduced species (particularly mosquitofish Gambusia, which have disrupted Aphanius populations across the region), and climate-driven changes to the hydrological balance of closed basins. Lake Hazar has so far escaped the most severe of these pressures, but the small geographic range of the species leaves no buffer — a significant pollution event, introduction of a competitor, or sustained drawdown of the lake could threaten the entire population. Continued monitoring of the lake's ecology and water balance is the appropriate conservation priority for this species.
