Taxonomy & naming
Laimosemion amanapira was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2004, in a paper published in the journal Zootaxa (volume 465, pages 1–12) alongside a second new species, Rivulus uakti. Both species were originally placed in the genus Rivulus, then the broadly defined catch-all genus for Neotropical rivulines. The authority is therefore presented in parentheses — (Costa, 2004) — to signal that the species has since been reassigned to a different genus.
The 2011 reclassification by Costa (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, 22(3):233–249) dismembered the old Rivulus aggregate and transferred amanapira first to Laimosemion, then ultimately to Melanorivulus — a genus erected to accommodate a cluster of Amazonian and Cerrado rivulines with a shared morphological and molecular signature. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the valid name as Laimosemion amanapira (Costa, 2004). Killifish hobbyists may still encounter this fish labelled as Rivulus amanapira in older trade literature and some American Killifish Association records.
The specific epithet amanapira is derived from an indigenous Amazonian place name associated with the upper Rio Negro region, reflecting the type locality. The genus name Melanorivulus combines the Greek melas (black or dark) with the Latin rivulus (small stream), a reference to both the colouration and the shallow-stream habitat typical of the group.
This fish was long listed as Melanorivulus amanapira; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Laimosemion, and the current combination Laimosemion amanapira is followed here.
Morphology
Laimosemion amanapira is a small rivuline in the typical mould of its genus: a slender, slightly compressed body with a rounded caudal fin, a dorsally flattened head, and a slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface and near-surface feeding. Precise size data are sparse in the published literature — FishBase does not record a maximum length for this species — but genus-level information from killifische.info places Melanorivulus species generally in the range of 1.2–2.4 in standard length, consistent with other small Amazonian rivulines.
Colouration in males is typical for the South American rivuline guild: a brownish to olive base with varying amounts of red to orange spotting or banding on the flanks and a iridescent sheen on the unpaired fins. As with most rivulines, precise colouration varies with collection locality, light conditions, and reproductive state. Females are plainer, with a more uniformly brownish body and reduced fin coloration. Sexually mature males develop brighter fin patterns and more saturated body colours, the defining visual signal in pair-formation.
Habitat
The type locality of Laimosemion amanapira is the upper Rio Negro basin near São Gabriel da Cachoeira in Amazonas state, northwestern Brazil — a region of blackwater rivers draining Precambrian Guiana Shield terrain covered in dense Amazonian rainforest. The upper Rio Negro and its tributaries are characterised by extreme softness and acidity: water transparency is high but the strong tannin and humic acid load gives the rivers their characteristic tea-brown colour, pH values are typically well below 6.0, and dissolved mineral content is among the lowest of any large river on Earth.
Genus-level habitat data from killifische.info describes Melanorivulus species as inhabitants of shallow marginal aquatic habitats — often less than 7.9 in deep — in exposed or partially shaded settings on undulating terrain. These are the seepage pools, stream margins, and seasonally flooded forest-floor microhabitats that characterise rivuline ecology across South America. Because this species is non-annual, it inhabits areas where water persists through the dry season rather than pools that dry out completely, though the shallow nature of its typical habitat means water levels fluctuate considerably between wet and dry periods.
Feeding
Like most small rivulines, Laimosemion amanapira is an opportunistic micropredator. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.3 for this species — in the mid-range for small carnivorous freshwater fish — consistent with a diet based primarily on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates: insect larvae, small worms, crustaceans, and other small invertebrates that fall onto or live near the water surface in shallow forest habitats.
In the aquarium, the species accepts a broad range of small live and frozen foods including Drosophila (fruit flies), micro-worms, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and Daphnia. Prepared micro-pellets may be taken once the fish is settled, though live and frozen foods should form the core of the diet for optimal condition and colouration. As with all small rivulines, food items must be appropriately sized — the relatively small mouth of Melanorivulus limits acceptance to items well under 0.08 in in the wild.
Mating
Laimosemion amanapira is a non-annual killifish, meaning its reproductive strategy does not depend on the burial of diapausing eggs in substrate that dries out seasonally. Instead, the species is a plant or mop spawner, depositing small numbers of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged roots, or fibrous spawning mops over an extended period rather than in a single mass-spawning event. This continuous or semi-continuous pattern of egg production is characteristic of rivulines inhabiting permanent or near-permanent water bodies.
Male Melanorivulus court females with lateral displays that show off fin pattern and body colouration. The spawning act itself is brief: the male presses alongside the female, fertilisation occurs as eggs are shed singly or in small numbers into vegetation or mop fibres, and the pair separates to resume normal behaviour. Males may be persistently attentive to females, and it is advisable to provide visual barriers or maintain females in good condition with ample food to reduce harassment stress.
Breeding
Eggs of Laimosemion amanapira are small, adhesive, and incubated in water rather than in moist peat or dried substrate. At typical tropical temperatures of 72–79 °F, incubation takes approximately two to three weeks. The eggs should be checked and removed individually or in small batches to a separate hatching container, as adults will consume eggs they encounter. Fungused eggs should be removed promptly to prevent spread to healthy eggs.
Fry hatch at a very small size and require infusoria or commercially available fry foods for the first days of life before graduating to Artemia nauplii and micro-worms. Growth is reasonably rapid under good conditions. Because breeding occurs over an extended period rather than in a single seasonal event, a small colony in a well-planted or mop-equipped tank will produce a continuous trickle of fry that can be raised in a separate grow-out vessel. Sexual maturity is typically reached within three to four months at normal temperatures.
In the aquarium
Laimosemion amanapira is suited to a small, well-covered species aquarium of 8–16 US gal. The tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable: like all rivulines this species is a capable jumper and will exit through any gap. A single male with one or two females is a practical and visually rewarding arrangement; multiple males will quarrel in confined quarters unless the tank is large enough to hold defined territories with sight-line breaks provided by dense planting, floating plants, or surface clutter.
Water chemistry should reflect the blackwater origin: soft (hardness below 5 °dH), acidic (pH 5.5–6.5), and moderately warm (72–79 °F). Dark substrate and low or dappled lighting will bring out the best colouration and encourage natural behaviour. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter is ideal — as the species is accustomed to very slow-moving or still marginal waters. Peat filtration or blackwater extract can be used to achieve the characteristic tannin-stained water of the upper Rio Negro. The American Killifish Association lists this species as one of interest to specialist hobbyists, and it has appeared in JAKA literature in 2010, 2011, and 2023, indicating periodic circulation in the killifish keeping community.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessment of 2018, conducted by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), places Laimosemion amanapira in the Least Concern category. This assessment reflects the species' occurrence in the upper Rio Negro basin, a region of relatively intact Amazonian rainforest that has not yet experienced the large-scale deforestation affecting other parts of the Amazon. FishBase records the species as having high population resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of less than 15 months — a characteristic of small, fecund, short-generation rivulines.
Despite the current LC status, the upper Rio Negro region faces growing extractive and agricultural pressure, and the São Gabriel da Cachoeira area hosts a significant human population with associated land-use change. Small, shallow-water habitat specialists like Laimosemion amanapira are inherently vulnerable to localised habitat degradation: sedimentation from forest clearance, water chemistry alteration from catchment disturbance, and the introduction of exotic species (particularly tilapia and mosquitofish) pose the most direct threats to shallow-water rivulines across Amazonia. The very limited size and locality data available for this species means that population trends cannot currently be assessed with confidence.
