Megalebias wolterstorffi was described by Ernst Ahl in 1924, with the authority therefore presented in parentheses to reflect subsequent generic transfers. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats the valid combination as Megalebias wolterstorffi (Ahl, 1924), placed within the family Rivulidae. The species has accumulated a notable nomenclatural history: it has at times been treated as the type-species of the subgenus Megalebias, and some recent reclassifications list it as Megalebias wolterstorffi; FishBase notes this alternate placement. The Catalog of Fishes remains the governing authority for the valid name used here.
Within Austrolebias — a diverse genus of South American annual killifish radiating across the Rio de la Plata drainage, Pampas coastal lagoons, and adjacent Uruguayan and southern Brazilian river systems — wolterstorffi sits among the larger-bodied species and is distinguished by its pronounced molluscivory, a trophic specialisation exceptional within the genus. The species epithet honours a person of the surname Wolterstorff, following a long tradition in ichthyological nomenclature of commemorating naturalists, aquarists, and museum workers active in the study of freshwater fish.

Morphology
Megalebias wolterstorffi reaches approximately 3.07 in standard length, making it a medium-sized representative of Rivulidae; FishBase also records up to 3.9 in total length. The body follows the compressed, robust plan typical of annual Austrolebias: a deep caudal peduncle, a relatively large mouth adapted for crushing prey, and scales that can display intense colouration in males during the breeding season.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, as in all annual killifish of this group. Males are more brightly coloured, typically displaying iridescent blues, greens, and reddish or orange-red fin margins — the common name 'red-fin killifish' reflects the latter feature — against a darker body background. Females are cryptically coloured in olive-brown tones with less vivid patterning, an adaptation that reduces predation risk for the sex responsible for egg deposition into substrate. The jaw musculature is notably developed relative to other Austrolebias, consistent with the molluscivorous diet that requires crushing hard-shelled prey.
Habitat
The species is native to the Laguna dos Patos hydrographic basin and adjacent coastal drainages of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, with range extensions into eastern Uruguay. Within this area it occupies shallow temporary wetlands — seasonal pools and swamps that fill during winter and spring rains and dry completely during the summer and autumn drought season. A 2010 field survey by Lanés and Maltchik documented the species within the Lagoa do Peixe National Park (a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve), with water samples taken from the Pai João swamp in June 2008 recording a pH of 6.52 ± 0.1, dissolved oxygen of 9.36 ± 0.91 mg/L, conductivity of 41.17 ± 10.83 mS/cm, and water temperature of 15.69 ± 33 °F.
The broader habitat range recorded for the species spans pH 6.0–7.5 and temperatures from approximately 59 °F in winter field conditions to 77 °F under summer breeding conditions, with water hardness variable but often relatively low. The substrate is soft — peat, mud, and accumulated organic detritus — and this is critical: it is into this substrate that the fish spawns and within which the eggs must survive the annual desiccation. The temporary pools are surrounded by Pampas grassland and coastal restinga vegetation, and are naturally embedded in a matrix of wetland habitats now severely diminished by agricultural conversion.
Feeding
Megalebias wolterstorffi is documented as the most specialised molluscivore within its genus (Lanés & Maltchik, 2010). Its diet centres on mollusks — gastropods and bivalves present in the shallow sediment-rich pools it inhabits — and the robust jaw apparatus of this species, larger and more heavily muscled than in less-specialised Austrolebias, is consistent with the mechanical demands of crushing shelled prey.
This trophic specialisation sets wolterstorffi apart from the majority of annual killifish, which are generalist carnivores taking invertebrates, zooplankton, and small insects. In the aquarium, the fish will accept meaty foods including earthworms, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and small invertebrates; some keepers report it can be trained to take quality pellets over time. The dietary preference for hard-shelled prey suggests that offering a variety of small crustaceans and invertebrates best replicates natural intake and supports condition.
Mating
Like all members of Austrolebias, wolterstorffi is an annual killifish with a substrate-spawning mating system in which the pair dives together into soft sediment to deposit eggs. Courtship involves the male displaying his brightest colours — the vivid blue-green iridescence and red-tipped fins — to the female, with lateral displays and close following before the pair aligns side by side at the substrate surface and plunges downward, burying themselves briefly in the peat or mud as the eggs are fertilised and deposited.
This spawning dive is the defining behavioural event of the annual killie life cycle: the eggs are left sealed within the substrate as the adults continue feeding, displaying, and spawning repeatedly throughout the wet season. Males in a community will compete for females, and physical condition, fin integrity, and colouration intensity all factor in female mate choice. In small or overcrowded tanks, subordinate males can be harassed, and keepers of this species typically maintain pairs or trios (one male, two females) rather than groups.
Breeding
The reproductive strategy of Megalebias wolterstorffi is defined by egg diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development that allows the eggs to survive the complete desiccation of their natal pool, sometimes for months, until rains return and trigger hatching. After the pair spawns in soft substrate, the fertilised eggs remain buried as the wet season progresses. As the pool dries, the eggs enter diapause — a multi-phase physiological suspension confirmed by embryonic development studies published in both Brazilian and international peer-reviewed journals — and persist in the dry peat through the drought.
In the aquarium hobby, this biology is managed by providing a peat moss or coco-fibre spawning medium in a container at the bottom of the tank. After approximately two to three months of spawning activity, the keeper removes the medium, gently squeezes out excess water, seals it in a labelled plastic bag or container, and stores it at room temperature for three to six months — the dry period. Megalebias wolterstorffi is an uncommon species in the hobby, encountered primarily through specialist killifish societies and breeders rather than retail channels, which reflects both its conservation status and the niche nature of annual killie keeping. It is not a demanding fish in terms of water chemistry — a pH of 6.0–7.5, temperatures of 68–77 °F, and soft to moderately hard water all suit it — but the annual life cycle imposes a management discipline that differs substantially from conventional aquarium fish.
The tank should be a shallow, covered species or duo setup (pair or one male with two females). A dark substrate of fine sand topped with a separate peat- or coco-fibre-filled spawning container is essential. Lighting should be subdued; tankmates are not appropriate for a species as rare and specialised as this one. Water changes of 10–20% weekly maintain quality, and a cover on the tank prevents jumping — annual killifish are active at the surface and escape readily through gaps.
Because wild populations are Critically Endangered, any captive stock of wolterstorffi represents genetic material of genuine conservation value. Keepers who acquire this species are encouraged to maintain proper pedigree records, share surplus eggs with other specialist breeders, and co-ordinate through killifish associations to preserve genetic diversity in ex-situ populations. Conservation
Megalebias wolterstorffi is assessed as Critically Endangered, a status supported by the Red Books of Threatened Fauna of both Rio Grande do Sul state and Brazil (Reis et al. 2003; Rosa & Lima 2008), reflecting its highly restricted range within a severely degraded wetland landscape. The Laguna dos Patos coastal wetland system has lost more than 90% of its natural wetlands to conversion for irrigated rice cultivation, soybean agriculture, exotic forestry (Eucalyptus, Acacia, Pinus plantations), and drainage infrastructure. The temporary pools this species requires have disappeared at landscape scale, leaving the remaining populations isolated in remnant patches.
The 2010 rediscovery of the species within Lagoa do Peixe National Park — a site that carries both Ramsar Wetland designation and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status — was a significant finding, as it confirmed the survival of a population within a legally protected area. Other known records include the Delta do Jacuí State Park and Private Natural Heritage Reserve Pontal da Barra. However, protected-area coverage is insufficient when the threats include hydrological modification (changes to water tables affecting temporary pool persistence), invasive species pressure (introduced exotic fish competing with or preying on killifish), and the continued encroachment of agriculture even near protected boundaries.
The species' annual life cycle, while elegantly adapted to seasonal drought, is a conservation liability: a single failed wet season at a key site — whether from drought, pollution, or drainage — eliminates the entire above-ground population, leaving survival dependent entirely on egg banks in the sediment. This vulnerability underscores the importance of both habitat protection and the hobby-maintained ex-situ breeding populations that collectively constitute a distributed insurance reservoir for this Critically Endangered fish.
