Mucurilebias leitaoi — now transferred to the monotypic genus Mucurilebias by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2014 — is a miniature annual killifish endemic to the Mucurí River basin in Bahia and Espírito Santo, south-eastern Brazil. Among the most range-restricted of all cynopoeciline killifishes, it inhabits shallow seasonal pools within the Atlantic Forest lowlands, passing the annual dry season as desiccation-resistant buried eggs. The species is assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, but its tiny area of occupancy — now heavily degraded by cellulose plantations and cattle pasture — places it in a conservation position considerably more precarious than that status implies.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was formally described by Cruz & Peixoto in 1992 from material collected in the Mucurí River basin, and originally placed in the genus Leptolebias. Wilson J. E. M. Costa reclassified it to Cynopoecilus in 2002 as part of a broader revision of cynopoeciline killifishes. In 2014 Costa again revisited the lineage through phylogenetic analysis, erecting the monotypic genus Mucurilebias to accommodate what he identified as the sister group to all remaining cynopoecilines — a deeply divergent position supported by seven morphological autapomorphies. The valid combination under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is therefore Mucurilebias leitaoi (Cruz & Peixoto, 1992), though the species is frequently listed in hobby databases and earlier literature under its previous genus-placements.

The seven autapomorphies distinguishing Mucurilebias within the cynopoeciline clade include a proportionally large eye occupying a substantial portion of the head, a vivid red bar passing through the opercle in males, a pale to white stripe along the dorsal-fin base in males, and a red stripe running the length of the anal fin in males. These characters collectively make leitaoi diagnosable at a glance in life, despite its diminutive size.

The specific epithet leitaoi honours a collector or contributor involved in securing the type series; the type series itself was reportedly lost after 1988, a circumstance that has complicated subsequent taxonomic work and adds urgency to any future field surveys within the known range.

This fish was long listed as Cynopoecilus leitaoi; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Mucurilebias, and the current combination Mucurilebias leitaoi is followed here. The name Leptolebias leitaoi has also been used for this fish, reflecting an intermediate generic placement before the 2014 transfer to Mucurilebias; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats it as a synonym of Mucurilebias leitaoi.

Meristics recorded from the type series include 13 dorsal fin rays, 16 anal fin rays, a dorsal/anal fin overlap ratio of 6.0, and approximately 25 lateral-line scales — counts consistent with the slender, miniature body plan of the clade. Only one specimen from the original type series is known to survive in a scientific collection; the remainder was lost after the 1988 collecting event.

Morphology

Mucurilebias leitaoi is a small fish, with males reaching approximately 1.2 in total length according to FishBase. The body plan is typical of cynopoeciline annuals: moderately compressed, fairly deep-bodied relative to length, with the rounded finnage and upturned mouth angle associated with near-surface position in shallow pools.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Males carry the suite of colour characters that define the genus: the bold red opercular bar, a white to pale stripe along the dorsal fin, and a red stripe on the anal fin. The eye is notably large in proportion to the head, a feature that is both a taxonomic character and likely an adaptation to dim, tannin-stained shallow water. Females are cryptically coloured as in other annual killifishes, lacking the bright markings of males and showing a more uniform, brownish body that provides camouflage in leaf-litter substrate. Data on meristic counts and other proportional measurements are sparse in the accessible literature, reflecting the rarity of museum material and the apparent loss of the original type series.

Habitat

The species is known only from the Mucurí River basin on the border of Bahia and Espírito Santo states in south-eastern Brazil, within the Atlantic Forest biome. It inhabits small, shallow seasonal pools — typically embedded in lowland Atlantic Forest or forest-edge environments — that fill during the rainy season and dry completely in the dry season. These pools are characterised by soft, dark substrate rich in leaf litter and organic detritus, and water that may be lightly acidic and tea-coloured from humic acids, though FishBase records a midpoint pH around 7 and temperatures around 75 °F.

The Atlantic Forest pools that Mucurilebias leitaoi occupies are among the most threatened wetland microhabitats in Brazil. The cellulose industry — eucalyptus and paper-pulp plantations — and conversion to cattle pasture have dramatically reduced the area and connectivity of suitable habitat within the Mucurí basin. The It Rains Fishes resource notes explicitly that the habitat has been destroyed by these industries, making the known range not merely small but actively shrinking.

Feeding

No detailed dietary studies are available for Mucurilebias leitaoi specifically. By analogy with related cynopoeciline and aplocheiloid annual killifishes of similar size and habitat, the species almost certainly feeds opportunistically on small invertebrates — chironomid midge larvae, microcrustaceans, zooplankton, and surface-fallen terrestrial insects — available within the shallow seasonal pools it inhabits. The upturned mouth is consistent with surface and mid-water feeding.

In aquarium care, hobbyists keeping related cynopoecilines report that small live and frozen foods — artemia nauplii, micro-worms, daphnia, and whiteworm — are taken readily and are important for conditioning breeding pairs. Dry prepared foods are generally accepted by established fish but should not form the bulk of the diet for a species this size.

Mating

Mucurilebias leitaoi is an annual killifish and employs the characteristic annual-killifish mating system: males display intensely to females using the vivid colour pattern — the red opercular bar and the striped fins — in short, rapid courtship bouts. The male positions himself alongside or beneath the female and the pair move in close proximity before the spawning act.

A key distinction flagged in the It Rains Fishes account is that spawning in this species occurs on top of the soil surface rather than through the peat-diving behaviour seen in many other annual killis. The pair press together at the substrate surface rather than burying themselves before egg release. This behavioural variant — surface deposition rather than active substrate penetration — is noted as a characteristic of the cynopoeciline lineage and should be reflected in aquarium husbandry: a soft, fine-grained substrate that eggs can press into slightly, rather than deep peat into which fish actively dive.

Breeding

Eggs are deposited singly or in small numbers on or just at the surface of the substrate. The eggs are approximately 0.05 in in diameter with a reticulated (net-like patterned) chorion — a surface texture that helps anchor them in substrate particles. Development follows the annual killifish pattern: the embryos enter diapause (developmental arrest) and are capable of surviving complete desiccation of the pool substrate through the dry season, resuming development and hatching when the pool refills with rain. At 73 °F and above, egg development outside diapause takes approximately 6–8 weeks according to the It Rains Fishes account.

In the aquarium, the standard annual-killifish peat-storage protocol is used: after a spawning period, the peat or coir medium carrying the eggs is removed, lightly squeezed to remove excess water, and stored in a sealed bag or container at room temperature for 6–10 weeks (following the guidance for related species, adjusted toward the 6–8 week development time). The medium is then re-wetted with aged water to trigger hatching. Fry are tiny at hatching but grow rapidly; the species lives less than one year in the wild, and aquarium specimens should reach sexual maturity within 2–3 months. Lifespan is short by aquarium standards — typically under 12 months — and pairs should be bred promptly once mature.

In the aquarium

Mucurilebias leitaoi is a rare species in the hobby, seldom seen outside specialist killifish circles and the American Killifish Association's distribution network. Its care follows the pattern for small South American annual killifishes: a small, covered aquarium with a soft, dark substrate (fine peat-sand mix or plain peat), minimal or gentle filtration, and subdued lighting that suits the species' shallow, tannin-coloured forest-pool home. FishBase records temperatures around 75 °F and pH around 7, though the species' Atlantic Forest habitat suggests tolerance of mildly acidic conditions.

Because males are brightly coloured and territorial toward one another, a species tank with one male and one or two females is the standard approach. The tight-fitting lid is essential, as with all killifishes. The AKA classifies the species under Class 3: South American Annuals, a grouping familiar to killifish hobbyists. Given the conservation situation in the wild — a narrow endemic in heavily degraded habitat — maintenance of captive populations through the killifish hobbyist community and regular peat-storage breeding cycles has genuine conservation value.

Conservation

The IUCN assessed Mucurilebias leitaoi as Data Deficient (DD) in 2022. The DD designation reflects an absence of robust population survey data rather than any indication of stability; for a species known from a single small river basin whose habitat has been heavily converted, Data Deficient is not reassuring. The American Killifish Association's species account explicitly records the IUCN status as DD from the 2022 assessment.

The principal threat is habitat destruction. The Mucurí River basin lies within the Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot, one of the most deforested and fragmented ecosystems on Earth. The It Rains Fishes account documents that the specific habitat of this species has been destroyed by the cellulose industry (eucalyptus pulp plantation expansion) and conversion to cattle pasture — two drivers that have erased the shallow seasonal pools and forest-floor microhabitats that annual killifishes of this lineage require. The loss of the type series after 1988 further complicates future research. Any field surveys to relocate extant populations, characterise remaining habitat, and formally assess population size would be a meaningful conservation contribution. Maintenance of captive lines within the killifish hobbyist community is currently the principal safeguard against the total loss of the species.
