Taxonomy & naming
Max Poll described this species in 1941 as Aphyosemion maeseni, based on the holotype MRAC P-66392, a 1.46 in TL specimen collected on 12–13 April 1939 at the confluence of the Masei River and the Bon de Boan, a tributary of the Nuon River on the Liberia–Ivory Coast border. The placement in Aphyosemion reflected the broad, catch-all use of that genus for West African killifishes common in mid-twentieth-century ichthyology. Killi-Data records an intermediate generic assignment as Archiaphyosemion maeseni before the current combination was established.
In 2009, Sonnenberg and Busch published a treatment reassigning the species to Epiplatys, placing it within the subfamily Epiplateinae alongside the other surface-oriented panchax killifishes. The 2009 revision identified morphological characteristics that separate the species from Aphyosemion sensu stricto, including features of the opercular region (the narrowing opercle borders characteristic of the Epiplatys clade) and snout shape. Sonnenberg and Busch also distinguished N. maeseni from the closely related E. olbrechtsi primarily on the basis of snout morphology — N. maeseni has a shorter, more rounded snout. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists Nimbapanchax maeseni (Poll, 1941) as the valid combination.
The genus Epiplatys comprises the panchax killifishes, a group of non-annual, surface-dwelling Aphyosemioninae relatives distributed across West and Central Africa. Unlike the annual killifishes of the genera Nothobranchius or Fundulopanchax, Epiplatys species inhabit permanent or near-permanent water bodies and do not undergo embryonic diapause.
This fish was long listed as Epiplatys maeseni; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Nimbapanchax, and the current combination Nimbapanchax maeseni is followed here.
Morphology
Nimbapanchax maeseni is a small, robustly built killifish reaching approximately 1.8 in standard length according to FishBase data derived from Poll's original material and subsequent records. The body form is typical of the panchax group: moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with a slightly dorso-ventrally flattened profile toward the head that reflects the surface-orientated lifestyle. The snout is notably short and rounded — one of the key diagnostic features separating this species from E. olbrechtsi — and the mouth is directed upward, well-suited to taking prey at the water surface.
Poll's original description notes a robust body and the presence of black or dark dots in the dorsal fin, a pigmentation pattern that may be taxonomically informative within the genus. The overall colouration of panchax-group Epiplatys is typically an olive to brownish-green base on the dorsum, with lighter flanks that in males often carry a pattern of red or orange spots or short bars in breeding condition. Detailed colour descriptions for N. maeseni specifically are limited in available sources; the species has not been extensively photographed in the aquarium literature.
Habitat
Nimbapanchax maeseni is native to a narrow region spanning northeastern Liberia, southeastern Guinea, and western Ivory Coast — the Upper Guinea forest zone, one of Africa's most biodiverse but threatened freshwater systems. The type locality, the confluence of the Masei River and the Bon de Boan (a tributary of the Nuon), lies near the three-country border at low to moderate elevation, in an area characterised by forest-savanna mosaic vegetation. FishBase records the species in brooks, pools, and small streams within forested savanna — relatively small, shaded water bodies that maintain permanent flow or standing water year-round.
Water chemistry at these sites is characteristically soft and mildly acidic, reflecting leaching through laterite and organic matter in the forest floor. FishBase records a temperature range of 68–75 °F and hardness of 4–12 dH — cool, soft conditions by West African standards. This contrasts with the warmer, often more mineralised water favoured by many lowland West African killifishes and confirms N. maeseni as a species adapted to permanent, shaded forest streams rather than the seasonal floodplain pools typical of annual killifishes in the region.
FishBase classifies the species as pelagic within its habitat — that is, oriented toward open water rather than the substrate — consistent with the surface-feeding panchax lifestyle. Its non-seasonal status (it does not rely on a dry-season resting phase) means it is found in the same permanent stream reaches throughout the year, though specific seasonal population data from the wild are sparse.
Feeding
Like other members of the Epiplatys panchax group, N. maeseni is a surface predator. The upturned mouth and dorsally flattened head are adaptations for snatching prey at or just below the water surface, including terrestrial insects that fall into the water, aquatic invertebrate larvae, and small crustaceans. The forested stream habitat provides a continuous rain of insect material from overhanging vegetation, and surface insects likely form a major component of the natural diet.
In captivity, panchax killifishes of this type are straightforward to feed: they accept live and frozen foods such as fruit flies (Drosophila), mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, daphnia, and small chironomid (bloodworm) larvae readily. Floating or slow-sinking dried foods are accepted by acclimatised specimens. A varied diet rich in small invertebrates supports good colouration and reproductive readiness.
Mating
Nimbapanchax maeseni is a non-annual killifish and, like all members of the panchax group, a plant-spawner rather than a soil-burying annual. In the wild, pairs locate fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, roots, or other submerged structure near the surface and deposit adhesive eggs individually or in small numbers over an extended period — a protracted, low-investment-per-spawn strategy suited to the stable, permanent water bodies the species inhabits.
Males of the panchax group are typically more vividly coloured than females and will court actively, displaying lateral colour patterns and fin postures to ripe females. Courtship in Epiplatys is generally brief; the male positions alongside or just beneath the female, and eggs and sperm are released with a body press or clasp. Pairs will spawn repeatedly over days or weeks without exhausting themselves, unlike the explosive, season-driven spawning of annual killifishes. The adhesive eggs are placed among plant material and left without parental attention.
Breeding
Eggs of non-annual Epiplatys incubate in water — there is no buried peat phase or diapause requirement. Incubation time depends on temperature; at the cool end of N. maeseni's natural range (around 72 °F) incubation takes approximately two to three weeks, with warmer conditions accelerating development. Eggs are small, adhesive, and relatively robust; they can be collected from spawning mops or fine-leaved plants and moved to a separate hatching vessel to protect them from adult predation.
Fry hatch at a small but feeding-capable size for killifish and can take appropriately sized live foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii or micro-worms from the outset. Growth is steady at the cooler temperatures preferred by the species. Because permanent-water Epiplatys do not require egg drying or storage in moist peat, the breeding cycle is more straightforward than for annual killifishes: a small, well-planted aquarium or a container with a synthetic spawning mop is sufficient, and fresh spawning attempts will continue as long as conditioning food and appropriate temperatures are maintained. Adults live considerably longer than annual killifishes — lifespans of two to four years are typical for the genus in captivity.
In the aquarium
Nimbapanchax maeseni is rarely encountered in the hobby; it lacks the vivid colour of popular annual killifishes such as Nothobranchius species and has not circulated widely in specialist killifish societies. Those who do maintain it report a quiet, surface-oriented fish that does well in small, well-covered aquaria with a dark substrate, subdued lighting, floating plants, and fine-leaved vegetation. The tight-fitting lid is essential — panchax killifishes are capable jumpers and will exploit any gap.
Water conditions should reflect the cool, soft origin: a temperature of 68–75 °F, soft water (4–12 dH), and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (approximately 6.0–7.0) reproduce the natural chemistry reasonably well. Filtration should be gentle; the small streams the species inhabits are not fast-flowing. Community companions must be chosen carefully — the small adult size of around 1.8 in SL means N. maeseni is itself vulnerable to larger tankmates, while its surface predator nature poses a risk to very small companions and fry.
Aquarium records of this species in the specialist literature are sparse, reflecting its limited availability. Killifish societies with a West African focus — particularly those maintaining contacts in the field — are the most likely source of material. The species' appeal to specialists lies in its taxonomic interest as a recently reclassified Epiplatys from an understudied river system, and in the challenge of maintaining cool, soft West African forest-stream conditions.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Nimbapanchax maeseni as Least Concern, reflecting that the species occupies permanent water bodies across a range spanning northeastern Liberia, southeastern Guinea, and western Ivory Coast, without evidence of rapid population decline at the time of assessment. Unlike single-locality endemic killifishes that depend on a single spring or seasonal pool, N. maeseni's occurrence across multiple river drainages in the Upper Guinea forest zone provides some buffer against localised habitat loss.
Nevertheless, the Upper Guinea biodiversity hotspot faces severe pressure. Liberia and Ivory Coast have experienced substantial deforestation over recent decades, driven by logging, agricultural conversion (particularly rubber and oil palm), and artisanal mining — all of which degrade the shaded forest-stream habitats N. maeseni depends on. Sedimentation from cleared land alters water chemistry and silts up the small brooks and pools the species favours. Unlike species dependent on seasonal or isolated water bodies, N. maeseni is not immediately threatened by water extraction or drought, but the quality and cover of its permanent forest-stream habitat are at risk wherever the surrounding forest is cleared.
The species has not been recorded as established in the aquarium trade in quantities that would raise collection pressure as a conservation concern. Continued monitoring of forest cover in the tri-border Liberia–Guinea–Ivory Coast region, and further field surveys to establish the full extent of the species' distribution within this region, would improve the accuracy of future IUCN assessments.
