Taxonomy & naming
Paraphanius mento was first described by the Austrian naturalist Jakob Heckel in 1843, giving it the authority (Heckel, 1843) — the parentheses indicating that the species has since been removed from the original genus in which Heckel placed it. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the currently valid combination Paraphanius mento, within the family Aphaniidae, the Old World toothcarps of the order Cyprinodontiformes.
The taxonomy carries a recent complication. A 2020 reclassification recognised the genus Paraphanius for a subset of species previously within Aphanius, and for a period Paraphanius mento appeared in the literature and in British Killifish Association publications under the name Paraphanius mento. Subsequent molecular and phylogenetic analyses — together with Catalog of Fishes treatment — retain mento within Aphanius, but older care sheets and BKA pamphlet No. 27 (1967) will be found under Paraphanius mento; they describe the same fish. The species is phylogenetically old: molecular work places its divergence from the Aphanius dispar group at roughly 25–28 million years ago, making it one of the most ancient lineages in the genus.
Locality-level variation is marked. Named aquarium populations such as 'Kirkgöz' (a karst spring in the Antalya province of Turkey) and 'Elbistan' (upper Euphrates drainage) differ subtly in colour pattern and body proportions, and hobbyists maintain these strains separately to preserve their integrity. No formal subspecific or varietal names are currently recognised under Catalog of Fishes treatment.

Morphology
Paraphanius mento is a compact, somewhat deep-bodied killifish. FishBase gives a maximum total length of around 2 in for males, with some literature references reaching 3.1 in; Seriously Fish records most wild and captive adults at 1.97–2.76 in standard length depending on population, with females typically running slightly smaller than males — the reverse of the condition in many killifish genera. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed, with an underslung, upturned jaw adapted for surface-feeding — the specific epithet mento is Latin for 'chin' or 'one with a prominent chin', a direct nod to this protruding lower jaw that characterises the species.
Sexual dichromatism is striking and among the most pronounced in the genus. Breeding males are olive-brown to steel-grey across the flanks, their sides covered in regular rows of iridescent blue-silver spots that concentrate around the gill plates and form crescent-shaped arcs on the caudal fin; dorsal, ventral, and anal fins flush dark bluish-purple with neat rows of lighter blue specks along the fin rays. In peak spawning condition the body darkens dramatically to near-black or deep bluish-purple, with the spots intensifying against the darkened ground colour. Females are cryptic by comparison: a light tan to cream ground colour, similar rows of steel-blue spots, a white ventrum, and wholly hyaline (transparent) fins. Some populations show faint vertical barring along the posterior flank in both sexes.
Habitat
Paraphanius mento inhabits a belt of fresh to slightly brackish water bodies across the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. The Seriously Fish account details its native distribution: Turkish coastal provinces (Antalya, Mersin, Adana, Hatay) and the associated Ceyhan and Seyhan river basins; the Tigris–Euphrates headwaters in Turkey, extending into Iraq; the Orontes River system in Syria and Lebanon; and the Jordan Rift Valley in Israel, including areas near the Dead Sea basin. Both flowing and standing waters are occupied: first-order streams, karst springs and their outflows, coastal lagoons, marshes, shallow lake margins, and irrigation canals. The species colonises marginal zones dense in submerged and emergent vegetation and filamentous algae.
Water chemistry throughout this range is hard and alkaline. Seriously Fish records pH 7.5–9.0 — the species will not survive in acidic water — and hardness of 179–536 ppm. Some populations occur in naturally saline or brackish springs, giving it a tolerance for elevated conductivity unusual among killifish. Temperature records span 36–86 °F across the full seasonal cycle of Anatolian and Levantine climates, though the thermal optimum for captive maintenance sits between 64–75 °F (British Killifish Association gives 65–75 °F). Winter cooling is actively beneficial: Seriously Fish notes that the species profits from a period of low-temperature dormancy mimicking the cold Anatolian winters, and that artificial heating is unnecessary in most temperate-climate fish rooms.
The species is a habitat generalist within the hard-water, alkaline-spring ecosystem type, but that ecosystem type is itself under severe and accelerating pressure across the eastern Mediterranean — making the fish ecologically common enough to reach Least Concern assessment while simultaneously vulnerable to local extirpation as individual spring systems are modified or drained.
Feeding
In the wild, Paraphanius mento is an omnivore with a marked vegetarian tendency. Seriously Fish describes the diet as including filamentous algae, plant material, and small invertebrates; FishBase additionally records insect larvae and small crustaceans. The upturned jaw, positioned for surface and near-surface feeding, suits a diet that combines surface-drifting invertebrates, algae grazed from rocks and submerged vegetation, and whatever zooplankton is present in warm-season pulses. The teeth — as in all Aphaniidae — are tricuspid, well-suited to cropping algae as well as seizing invertebrate prey.
In captivity, the British Killifish Association notes that dried and flake foods are accepted less readily than live and frozen items, and that the fish are heavy, enthusiastic eaters when properly stimulated. Live or frozen Artemia, Daphnia, and bloodworm are the preferred foods; small amounts of vegetable-based foods (algae wafers, blanched greens, spirulina-enriched flake) round out the diet and are consistent with the species' natural omnivory. Conditioning breeders on a high-protein, varied diet produces the most intense male colouration and the best egg production.
Mating
Paraphanius mento is a non-annual killifish. It inhabits permanent or near-permanent water bodies and does not produce diapausing eggs; instead it is a fractional, continuous spawner that distributes its reproductive effort across a long season rather than concentrating it into a single mass event timed to seasonal flooding. In the wild, breeding runs from approximately April through September as temperatures rise and day-length increases. Males are territorial and aggressive — Seriously Fish describes Paraphanius mento males as the most aggressive within the genus — and form temporary courtship territories that are hotly contested.
Males at peak breeding condition deepen to near-black with brilliantly iridescent spots; they display aggressively to rival males and display laterally toward females, erecting their fins to show the full extent of their colouration. The British Killifish Association account notes that the species spawns in small groups — trios of one male and two females are productive — and that males drive females persistently. Fertilisation follows a brief spawning embrace typical of Aphaniidae, and eggs are deposited individually or in small batches at the spawning site.
Breeding
Eggs of Paraphanius mento are adhesive and are attached singly or in small batches to fine-leaved plants, filamentous algae, or floating synthetic spawning mops by short sticky filaments — the classic plant-spawner strategy of non-annual killifish. The British Killifish Association records incubation at 7–10 days at 72 °F (approximately 72 °F); Seriously Fish gives 6–14 days depending on temperature. Fry are robust and immediately free-swimming, accepting newly hatched Artemia (brine shrimp) nauplii as a first food from day one; Seriously Fish additionally recommends microworms or commercial fry powder as an alternative. Growth is fast: the BKA notes sexual maturity is reached at 12–16 weeks.
In captivity, spawning is typically conducted in small dedicated tanks of 2–3 gallons (the BKA's suggestion), furnished with floating spawning mops or Java moss. A good trio at peak production yields upward of 300 eggs per week. Mops or egg-laden plants should be checked every two to three days, with eggs transferred to a hatching container of hard, alkaline water at the same temperature. Fry rearing water should be alkaline — consistent with the hard-water chemistry of the natural habitat — to promote development. Given the species' value in the hobby and its conservation context, Seriously Fish emphasises captive reproduction as a priority; maintaining pure locality strains rather than mixing populations is strongly encouraged by specialist organisations.
In the aquarium
Paraphanius mento is an excellent but uncompromising specialist's fish. It is not demanding in its water requirements provided the fundamental chemistry is correct: it must have hard, alkaline water (pH 7.5–9.0, hardness in excess of 150 ppm) and will not survive acidic or soft conditions that are typical of West African or South American killifish setups. Temperature is flexible — 64–75 °F suits most populations well — and the species is genuinely cold-tolerant, benefiting from a cool-to-cold winter period rather than year-round tropical temperatures. No artificial heating is required in most temperate fish rooms.
Male aggression is the principal husbandry challenge. Males are highly combative with one another and persistent drivers of females; a single male with two or three females in a species-only tank of 23.6 in or more is a safer arrangement than multiple males. Line-of-sight breaks — fine-leaved plants (Myriophyllum, Ceratophyllum), Java moss, spawning mops — reduce male-on-female harassment and give females retreat options. A tight-fitting lid is advisable as the species can jump. Tankmates should be species of similar size and chemistry preference; keeping Paraphanius mento with other hard-water fish of the Rift Valley or Mediterranean/Asian killi community is natural, but mixing with conspecific strains from different localities is discouraged by specialist breeders working to maintain the integrity of named populations.
The fish's rarity in the hobby is a function of its limited commercial appeal rather than any difficulty of maintenance. Serious hobbyists and killifish societies are the primary custodians of captive stock, and obtaining fish through the British Killifish Association, American Killifish Association, or specialist European killi clubs is the recommended route.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Paraphanius mento as Least Concern (assessed 11 March 2013), based on a sufficiently wide range and stable population estimate at the time of assessment. However, this headline status masks real and ongoing fragility at the level of individual water bodies. The species' range — eastern Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and the Tigris–Euphrates headwaters — spans one of the world's most water-stressed regions. Coastal lagoons are drained or modified for agriculture and tourism; spring systems are over-pumped for irrigation and municipal water supply; wadis and first-order streams are diverted or channelled. The introduction of non-native species, particularly eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki), poses a well-documented predation and competition threat to Aphanius populations throughout the Mediterranean basin.
Some Paraphanius mento populations are landlocked — the result of historical or anthropogenic water management — and therefore unable to recolonise lost habitat from adjacent systems. Named aquarium populations such as 'Kirkgöz' are tied to specific spring systems; if a spring is capped or its flow reduced, the local population has no refuge. Seriously Fish flags habitat degradation as a key threat across the species' range, and notes that captive breeding is therefore not merely an aquarist's project but a genuine conservation backstop for the loss of individual locality stocks.
In the aquarium hobby, the species is maintained almost exclusively by dedicated killifish hobbyists through national societies — the British Killifish Association and American Killifish Association both maintain records of captive-held locality strains. These networks represent the primary insurance against the loss of genetic diversity in the event that specific natural populations collapse. Maintaining, documenting, and exchanging pure locality strains — rather than mixing populations into untraceable hybrids — is therefore the most meaningful conservation action available to hobbyists keeping this species.
