Tellia apoda is almost certainly extinct in the wild. A small killifish endemic to a single spring-fed drainage in northeastern Algeria, it was last collected from nature in 1990 — when Dutch aquarist Rob Vonk found and preserved a small founder group from a stream south of Ain M'Lila. Every individual alive today descends from that one collection. The IUCN Red List assessed the species as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) in 2022, and field surveys since 1990 have failed to relocate any wild population. Its continued existence depends entirely on a network of dedicated killifish hobbyists maintaining captive lines — making it one of the most extreme cases of aquarium-based conservation in freshwater biology.

Taxonomy & naming

Tellia apoda was described by the French zoologist Henri Gervais in 1853, with the type locality recorded as a stream system south of Ain M'Lila, in the high plains of northeastern Algeria. Because the name has been moved to the genus Aphanius from the genus in which Gervais originally placed it, the authority is given in parentheses under standard zoological convention. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Tellia apoda (Gervais, 1853) as the valid combination.

The genus Aphanius belongs to the family Aphaniidae — the Old World toothcarps — a group separated from the broader Cyprinodontidae in modern classifications to reflect the distinct evolutionary history of Mediterranean and West Asian killifishes. The genus encompasses roughly twenty species distributed across the Mediterranean basin, the Middle East, and Central Asia, predominantly in hard, alkaline, often saline spring and coastal habitats. Tellia apoda sits within this group as an Algerian endemic with an extremely restricted historical range.

The specific epithet apodus is Latin for 'footless' or 'without feet' — the exact reasoning behind Gervais's choice is not documented in accessible sources, but apodus was applied to various animals with reduced or vestigial paired appendages; in context it may refer to the reduced pelvic fins characteristic of some Aphanius species. No widely used common name has been established for this species in the English-language literature or hobby.

This fish was long listed as Aphanius apodus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats that name as a synonym of Tellia apoda, the valid name followed here.

Morphology

Tellia apoda is a small killifish, reaching a maximum of around 2 in total length according to FishBase records — typical for the genus Aphanius, in which most species are compact, sexually dimorphic toothcarps adapted to open, often exposed water conditions. The body is stocky and moderately laterally compressed, with the relatively large scales and small, upturned mouth characteristic of surface-oriented feeders in the family Aphaniidae.

Sexual dimorphism is marked, as in essentially all Aphanius species. Males are smaller and more brightly coloured, displaying the banded or barred patterning typical of the genus — alternating pale and dark vertical bars across the flanks, often with iridescent blue or silvery highlights depending on angle and condition. Females are larger-bodied, plainer, and distinctly deeper in the belly when carrying eggs. The caudal fin in males may show distinct fin-ray patterning. Precise colour descriptions specific to apodus in the literature are sparse, and most observations derive from captive populations maintained since 1990.

Habitat

In nature, Tellia apoda occupied permanent or near-permanent spring-fed streams and wells in the semi-arid high plains of northeastern Algeria — a landscape defined by limestone karst geology, seasonal temperature extremes, and naturally hard, mineral-rich water. The Arizona Rivulin Keepers document the species as euryhaline, capable of tolerating fresh, brackish, and even marine-strength salinity — a trait shared by many Mediterranean Aphanius that inhabit coastal lagoons and salt-spring systems, though the Ain M'Lila locality is an interior one rather than a coastal site.

FishBase records a water temperature of approximately 73 °F and a near-neutral pH around 7 for the species, consistent with cool-to-warm karst spring conditions. The Deutsche Killifisch Gemeinschaft describes Aphanius as requiring hard, calcium-rich water typical of Mediterranean karst systems — the opposite of the soft, acidic blackwater favoured by many West African annual killies. The type locality stream appears to have been a relatively stable, permanent watercourse, classifying this as a non-annual species adapted to dependable water rather than ephemeral seasonal pools.

The site of the 1990 collection — a stream south of Ain M'Lila, east of Fourchi in the wilaya of Oum el Bouaghi — was a modest agricultural-region drainage. That the species has not been relocated since suggests either that the watercourse was heavily modified or dried during the subsequent decades of intensive groundwater extraction and land use change that affected much of northeastern Algeria's spring systems.

Feeding

Tellia apoda feeds in the manner typical of Old World toothcarps: an opportunistic surface and midwater feeder taking invertebrates, algae, plant matter, and detritus. The upturned mouth and position in exposed, shallow spring habitats favours surface feeding on small insects, zooplankton, and algal films. FishBase notes the species has minor commercial interest as an aquarium food source — a reference to its historical use as feeder material rather than to any commercial aquaculture of the species itself.

In captivity, the Arizona Rivulin Keepers describe Tellia apoda as undemanding and accepting of live, frozen, and flake foods. Small live or frozen invertebrates — Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, chironomid larvae — represent the closest approximation to the natural diet and maintain colour and condition. The species should not be kept with much larger tankmates that might outcompete it for food.

Mating

Tellia apoda is a non-annual killifish: it does not bury eggs in substrate and does not produce diapausing eggs. Instead, the pair engages in courtship in open water, and eggs are deposited on fine-leaved plants, algal mats, roots, or artificial spawning mops to which they adhere. This plant-spawner strategy is consistent with residence in permanent water where there is no seasonal desiccation to favour the annual egg-burying mode.

Males are territorial and display actively toward females, engaging in lateral displays and fin-spread courtship. The Arizona Rivulin Keepers note that in smaller groups males can be aggressive, and that the schooling tendency of the species moderates aggression at higher densities. Spawning occurs year-round in captivity, with a natural peak in spring and summer — the season of maximum water temperature and invertebrate abundance in the type locality's climate. The eggs are small, adhesive, and incubate in water with no diapause period.

Breeding

In the aquarium, Tellia apoda spawns readily and continuously throughout the year. The pair or small group deposits adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, Java moss, or synthetic spawning mops over a period of days to weeks; there is no single mass-spawning event. Eggs incubate in the water column attached to the spawning substrate and hatch within approximately two weeks depending on temperature — no buried peat or drying period is needed or appropriate for this non-annual species.

The Sixth Extinction Forum records that juveniles mature and are ready to spawn by their second summer — a relatively short generation time consistent with the small body size and warm-climate origin of the species. Because adults may eat eggs and small fry, many breeders remove spawning mops periodically and hatch eggs separately, or provide dense planting to allow fry to avoid predation. First foods for fry are appropriately sized live foods: infusoria, micro-worms, and Artemia nauplii. Growth is steady in clean, hard, warm water.

The captive population maintained since Rob Vonk's 1990 collection represents the entire genetic reservoir of the species. Breeders in the killifish hobby — particularly within German and European killifish societies — have maintained lines with care, but the genetic bottleneck inherent in a founder population of unknown size demands continued attention to avoid inbreeding depression. Coordinated management across hobbyist collections is the species' only buffer against total extinction.

In the aquarium

Tellia apoda is best kept in a species-only or near-species aquarium by hobbyists with a specific conservation commitment to the species — it is not an ornamental fish for the general trade. Its small size (to 2 in) makes it suitable for a modest tank of 16–21 US gal, but water chemistry must match its hard, alkaline, saline-tolerant profile. The Deutsche Killifisch Gemeinschaft recommends calcium-rich, hard water; the Arizona Rivulin Keepers suggest that some salt addition may benefit populations from brackish-tolerant lineages, though the type locality was a freshwater spring rather than a coastal site.

Temperature around 72–77 °F suits the species year-round; the Algerian high-plains origin means the fish tolerates cooler temperatures better than many tropical killies. Strong filtration and regular partial water changes maintain the clean, well-oxygenated conditions appropriate for a fish from spring-fed streams. Fine-leaved plants or spawning mops serve both as décor and as the spawning substrate the species requires. Males are territorial, so keeping one male to two or more females, or maintaining a larger group with sufficient cover, reduces harassment.

Given the precarious conservation status of the species, keepers are strongly encouraged to connect with the European Killifish Association (EKA), the Deutsche Killifisch Gemeinschaft (DKG), or the American Killifish Association (AKA) to source fish from established captive lines and to register their own populations. The aquarium community is the only reason this species still exists.

Conservation

Tellia apoda occupies one of the most extreme conservation positions of any freshwater fish: last recorded in the wild in 1990, assessed as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) on the IUCN Red List in 2022, and surviving today only through the efforts of killifish hobbyists. The entire known captive population descends from a single collection made by Dutch aquarist Rob Vonk from a stream south of Ain M'Lila, northeastern Algeria — a single founder event from which no subsequent wild backup has been available for over three decades.

The pressures that almost certainly eliminated the wild population are consistent with those affecting spring and small-stream endemics across North Africa: groundwater extraction and aquifer depletion reducing or eliminating spring flow; agricultural modification of drainage channels; and potential competition from or predation by introduced species such as mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), which have devastated native killifish populations across the Mediterranean basin. Field surveys have failed to relocate any wild population despite the known type locality.

The IUCN 2022 assessment — an upgrade in urgency from the earlier Data Deficient listing recorded in some older sources — reflects this reality. The species meets the criteria for Critically Endangered under criterion D (very small population size) at minimum, with the qualifier 'Possibly Extinct' applied given the absence of any wild record since 1990. Conservation action is effectively limited to captive maintenance within the killifish hobby, coordinated to preserve genetic diversity and prevent the loss of the captive lineage. A field survey of the type locality and surrounding spring systems in northeastern Algeria remains a conservation priority that has not, to available knowledge, been systematically undertaken in recent years.
