John McClelland described this fish in 1842 as Cobitis boutanensis, based on specimens gathered on the Griffith expedition into the Mishmee Mountains and the wider Bhutan region — hence the parentheses now placed around his name, which signal that the species has since been moved out of its original genus. Its taxonomic history is unusually tangled for such a small fish: the type locality was long mis-cited in the literature as Bolan Pass, Afghanistan, an error that stood for well over a century until a 2015 paper in Zootaxa ("Repatriating a lost name") traced the confusion back to McClelland and Griffith's original notes and restored the correct Bhutanese type locality.
The species has also moved between genera as the old wastebasket taxa Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart through the 20th and 21st centuries. Some regional treatments and databases list it under Aborichthys, a genus of small Himalayan nemacheilids with an anteriorly placed vent, rather than Paracobitis; this article follows the Paracobitis placement, but readers researching the species further should expect to encounter it under either name.
