Beaufortia zebroida is a miniature hillstream loach from fast-flowing rivers of subtropical China, reaching barely 2.7 cm in standard length — one of the smallest members of the family Gastromyzontidae. Described by P. W. Fang in 1930, it belongs to a genus of flattened, sucker-like rheophiles that cling to rock in churning torrent water, rasping biofilm from stone surfaces. Everything about its biology — the disc-shaped body, the demand for cold, oxygen-saturated, racing water, the utter dependence on a mature algal crust — reflects a life spent plastered to boulders in mountain streams. It is a fish for experienced keepers who can sustain the demanding flow and biofilm conditions it requires, not a beginner's algae-eater.

Taxonomy & naming

Beaufortia zebroida was described by the Chinese ichthyologist P. W. Fang in 1930. The parentheses around the authority name signal that Fang placed it in a different genus at the time of description; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) now lists it under Beaufortia. The genus Beaufortia, named in honour of the Dutch naturalist H. C. de Beaufort, contains a small number of gastromyzontid hillstream loaches endemic to southern and central China.

Historically the family containing this group was placed within the broad river-loach family Balitoridae, but modern phylogenetic work has separated the East and Southeast Asian torrent loaches into Gastromyzontidae — the family that now correctly houses Beaufortia. FishBase records the family accordingly. In the trade the species is sometimes sold simply as a 'zebra hillstream loach' or 'Chinese hillstream loach', but such names are applied loosely across several similar species, and scientific identification to species level is needed for certainty.

This fish was long listed as Beaufortia zebroidus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Beaufortia, and the current combination Beaufortia zebroida is followed here.

Morphology

Beaufortia zebroida is strikingly flattened dorso-ventrally, with a broad, depressed head and a body that tapers toward a slender tail — a form tuned by evolution for life on the underside of rocks in racing current. The paired pectoral and pelvic fins spread horizontally and, together with the flattened belly, create a suction effect that locks the fish to hard substrate. The result is a fish that can hold its position against flows that would sweep most species away.

It is tiny: the maximum recorded standard length is 1.1 in, making it one of the smallest loaches kept in the hobby. The body is patterned with zebra-like dark bars or blotches on a pale background — the markings that give the species its epithet. Like other gastromyzontids it has a relatively reduced scale cover, leaving the skin somewhat vulnerable to chemical treatments. There is no suborbital spine; that feature is characteristic of the botiid loaches (Botiidae), not the hillstream loaches of Gastromyzontidae.

Habitat

Beaufortia zebroida is native to subtropical China, inhabiting fast-moving, shallow hill streams and rocky torrents where water temperature remains relatively cool and dissolved oxygen is close to saturation. The natural habitat is stony, with a substrate of bare rock, coarse gravel and occasional sand pockets; silt and fine sediment are swept away by current, leaving hard surfaces clean and covered in the thin algal and diatom crust — biofilm — that forms the basis of the fish's diet.

This is unambiguously a rheophilic, high-oxygen specialist. Water in its home streams is clear, moderately hard to moderately soft, and generally neutral to slightly acidic. It is not a warm-water tropical fish: the subtropical latitude and high-flow, well-shaded stream habitat keep water temperatures moderate, typically in the 68–75 °F range. Still or warm water means low dissolved oxygen, and low dissolved oxygen means a slow decline in a fish that has evolved for near-saturation conditions.

Feeding

Beaufortia zebroida is an aufwuchs grazer: it rasps biofilm, diatoms and microalgae from hard rock surfaces using a subterminal, sucker-like mouth adapted for scraping. In the wild this film is constantly renewed by well-lit, fast, clear water — conditions that keep diatom and green algal growth continuous. The fish grazes almost constantly, moving across rock faces with small, rhythmic mouth movements.

In the aquarium, biofilm is the core of the diet and the single most important thing to provide. A fish placed into a bare or newly set-up tank will find nothing to graze and will slowly starve even if algae wafers are offered, because it does not readily learn to forage from open substrate without the cue of an established biofilm. The tank must be mature — at least several months old, ideally older — with algae-covered rocks before Beaufortia zebroida is introduced. Once biofilm is established, it can be supplemented with high-quality sinking algae wafers, spirulina discs, and thinly blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach. Occasional small protein items — baby brine shrimp, micro worms, frozen daphnia — round out the diet and support condition.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Beaufortia zebroida is subtle and reliable sexing is difficult. In related gastromyzontids, females in breeding condition tend to be noticeably rounder in the abdomen than males, but outside the breeding season the two sexes can be almost indistinguishable by eye. Some sources note slight differences in head shape or facial tubercle development between males and females in mature specimens of Beaufortia species, but this requires close comparison of multiple fish.

Spawning in the wild is presumably linked to the seasonal hydrological cycle of hill streams — rising water levels, slightly changed temperatures or chemistry, and increased current in the wet season providing spawning cues. The specific mating behaviour of Beaufortia zebroida in the wild has not been documented in detail; the pattern inferred from the genus and from closely related gastromyzontids is that males compete for access to females on and around suitable spawning substrate — rocky areas with clean, fast-flowing water and fine gravel or sand pockets.

Breeding

Beaufortia zebroida is an egg-scatterer with no parental care. The pattern established for Beaufortia species is that eggs are released into the water column during spawning, drift with the current, and settle or are carried into the interstices of the gravel substrate, where they develop over a few days. Newly hatched larvae, only around 0.08 in long, remain sheltered between gravel particles before gradually dispersing to feed on biofilm.

Verified captive breeding of Beaufortia zebroida specifically is sparsely documented, but spawning has been achieved with Beaufortia and related gastromyzontid species in mature, strongly-flowing aquaria that closely replicate river conditions — meaning excellent water quality, heavy flow, cool temperature, high oxygenation, and an established biofilm and fine-gravel spawning substrate. It is not a species that breeds routinely in home tanks, and most available fish are wild-collected. Keepers who wish to attempt breeding should focus first on providing optimal conditions for long-term health; spawning, if it occurs, follows from that baseline rather than from deliberate manipulation.

In the aquarium

Beaufortia zebroida is not a fish for beginners, and it is emphatically not a generic algae-eater to be added to a community tank for tank-cleaning duty. Its core requirements — strong flow, cool temperature, high dissolved oxygen, and a mature biofilm — are specific and non-negotiable, and a keeper who cannot sustain them should not keep this species.

The tank should be sized at a minimum of around 20–29 US gal, but the critical parameter is flow: a turnover of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour is the target, delivered by a powerful canister or river-manifold filter rather than a simple powerhead. Rocks and smooth river pebbles should form the primary hardscape, allowed to mature under bright lighting before the fish are introduced so that a proper algal and diatom crust develops. Temperature should be kept in the 68–75 °F range (68–75 °F); sustained warmth above 75–77 °F reduces dissolved oxygen and stresses the fish. A tight-fitting lid is essential — hillstream loaches are capable climbers and will escape through any gap.

Beaufortia zebroida is peaceful toward other species and does well with fast-water companions that tolerate the same conditions: white cloud mountain minnows, smaller danios, hillstream gobies, and temperate invertebrates. It should not be kept with fish that require warm, still water. A group of three or more individuals is preferable to a single fish, as the species appears more settled and active in company. Because the skin has reduced scale cover, avoid copper-based treatments and use half-doses of medications cautiously if disease treatment becomes necessary.

Conservation

Beaufortia zebroida is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (LC), reflecting that it is not currently considered at elevated risk of extinction across its range in subtropical China. The assessment, most recently confirmed in 2024, takes into account the species' occurrence in hill-stream drainages where it presumably has a broad enough distribution to buffer local pressures.

Nonetheless, the fish's reliance on clean, fast, cool, low-silt stream water makes it inherently vulnerable to catchment disturbance. Deforestation and changes in land use in southern China alter run-off, increase sediment loads, and raise water temperatures in hill streams — all of which degrade the biofilm-covered rocky habitat that Beaufortia zebroida depends on. River channelisation and impoundments change flow regimes in ways that can eliminate torrent habitat. Most fish in the aquarium trade are wild-collected; sustainable collection practices and reduction of habitat pressures in the native range are the relevant conservation levers for this species.
