Kapuasia maculiceps is a small, sand-loving stone loach known only from the Kapuas drainage of Borneo, where it lives half-buried in soft river sand and hunts small invertebrates by ambush. It is a slender, eel-bodied nemacheilid best known in the trade by its striking red tail — the feature behind the name "redtail sand loach." Genuinely obscure outside a narrow circle of specialist keepers and researchers, it has just been reassigned taxonomically: in 2024 Kottelat & Tan moved it out of Nemacheilus into a new, monotypic genus, Kapuasia, created specifically for this fish. Data on its biology remains sparse, and it carries a Data Deficient rating from the IUCN — an honest reflection of how little has been studied about a fish confined to a single Bornean drainage.

Taxonomy & naming

Kapuasia maculiceps was described by Tyson Roberts in 1989, placed at the time in the genus Nemacheilus, part of the broad stone-loach assemblage that has been repeatedly split and reshuffled as the family Nemacheilidae has come under closer taxonomic scrutiny. In early 2024, Maurice Kottelat and Heok Hui Tan published a reclassification erecting a new genus, Kapuasia, specifically for this species — distinguished by a large suprapectoral flap above the pectoral fin and a distinctive lip morphology not shared with other Nemacheilus-group loaches. Under that revision the current valid combination is Kapuasia maculiceps.

This article follows the working name Kapuasia maculiceps, reflecting the genus placement most familiar to the hobby and much of the recent literature, while flagging the 2024 change: Catalog of Fishes users and anyone cross-referencing older sources should be aware the species has moved from Nemacheilus to the monotypic genus Kapuasia. The type locality is the Kapuas drainage of West Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia — the only place the species is currently known from.

This fish was long listed as Schistura maculiceps; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Kapuasia, and the current combination Kapuasia maculiceps is followed here.

Morphology

This is a slender, elongated, almost eel-like loach, reaching a modest maximum size of around 2.53 in standard length — a genuinely small fish even by nemacheilid standards. The body shape reflects a life spent moving through and over loose sand: a low-slung, streamlined profile suited to hugging the substrate rather than swimming freely in open water.

The standout feature, and the source of its trade name, is a bright red tail that stands out sharply against the fish's more muted body tones — a visual cue distinctive enough that aquarium suppliers market the species simply as the "redtail sand loach." Like other members of the stone-loach family Nemacheilidae, it has a small, erectile suborbital spine below the eye and near-scaleless skin, both typical family traits that carry real husbandry consequences. Beyond these points the cache holds no further detail on fin counts, barbel number or precise patterning, and rather than guess at specifics, we leave that description sparse.

Habitat

Kapuasia maculiceps is endemic to the Kapuas drainage on the island of Borneo, Indonesia — one of Southeast Asia's largest river systems and a centre of freshwater fish diversity found nowhere else. Within that system it is a benthic sand specialist, living on and within soft, sandy river substrate rather than among rock or cobble, a niche distinct from many of its stone-loach relatives that prefer harder stream beds.

Detailed water-chemistry data for its native habitat has not been captured in available sources, which is common for a narrow-range, poorly studied stream endemic. What is documented is its substrate preference and its habit of spending time partially buried in sand, an ambush posture from which it strikes at passing invertebrates. Given its family and habitat, it is reasonable to expect the clear, flowing, well-oxygenated water typical of Bornean lowland and foothill rivers, but specific temperature and pH figures are not available and are not asserted here.

Feeding

Kapuasia maculiceps is a micro-predator, taking small invertebrates from the sand and water column rather than grazing algae or biofilm. Sources describe it as an ambush hunter: it lies partially buried in soft sand and strikes at small prey that come within range, a strategy well suited to its sand-specialist habitat in the Kapuas system.

In the aquarium this predatory habit points toward small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, small aquatic invertebrates and similar sinking fare — rather than flake or plant-based foods, which this species is unlikely to take with much enthusiasm. As with much of its biology, detailed dietary study is lacking, and keepers should expect to feed to the general micro-predator template for sand-dwelling nemacheilids rather than to species-specific data.

Mating

No information on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour for Kapuasia maculiceps has been captured in available sources. This is unsurprising for a narrow-range Bornean endemic that is, by the trade's own account, rarely imported and rarely observed even by specialists. Nothing here should be inferred beyond what stone and brook loaches typically do.

Breeding

As with the wider Nemacheilidae, Kapuasia maculiceps is best understood as an egg-scatterer: stone and brook loaches in this family typically release eggs over gravel or sand in flowing water, with no parental care afterward. There is no record of aquarium spawning for this species specifically, and the German loach society IG BSSW's coverage of the Kapuasia group notes these Bornean sand-dwelling nemacheilids are rarely imported or bred in captivity — a pattern consistent with most stone loaches, which remain essentially unbred at home even where the family's general reproductive mode is well understood.

Keepers should not expect to breed this species. It should not be confused with the cave-guarding, male-tending spawning seen in some gobies, or with any form of mouthbrooding — neither behaviour occurs in this family. The honest picture is a data-sparse species from a single river system that is occasionally scattered through the trade but essentially unstudied in captive reproduction.

In the aquarium

Given its small adult size — around 2.53 in SL — Kapuasia maculiceps does not need a large tank, but its sand-specialist habits set firm requirements on substrate: fine, soft sand deep enough to allow the burying behaviour this fish relies on in the wild is essential, not optional. A bare-bottom or coarse-gravel setup denies it its core natural behaviour and is likely to produce a stressed, hidden fish rather than the active sand-dweller seen in habitat photos and trade descriptions.

As a nemacheilid, it shares the family's near-scaleless skin, which makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally — half-doses and gentle, targeted products are the safer route if disease treatment becomes necessary. Being an ambush micro-predator, it should be offered small live or frozen foods rather than relying on flake. Beyond substrate, feeding and medication caution, detailed aquarium care data for this specific species is sparse; keepers taking it on should treat it as a specialist fish for a dedicated sand-bottomed setup rather than a general community loach, and should expect an uncommon, narrow-range import rather than a staple of the trade.

Conservation

Kapuasia maculiceps is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient — there is not enough information available to determine whether it is threatened, and this reflects genuine scientific uncertainty rather than an absence of concern. The species is known only from the Kapuas drainage of Borneo, a narrow, single-river range that leaves it inherently vulnerable to any localised habitat pressure even though no specific threat has been documented.

As with many range-restricted Southeast Asian stream endemics, the honest conservation story here is that too little study has been done to say more. The species does appear in the aquarium trade under the redtail sand loach name, but is described as rarely imported; there is no evidence in available sources of trade-driven population pressure, though any collection from a single-drainage endemic warrants caution until better data exists.
