Parabotia fasciatus is a peaceable, boldly patterned botiid loach from the rivers of China — one of the most visually striking members of the family and, according to FishBase, one of the most desirable Chinese loaches in the hobby. It grows to about 18–19 cm and favours fast-to-medium-flow streams with good oxygenation. Like all botiids it carries an erectile suborbital spine, is near-scaleless and sensitive to medications, and demands the company of its own kind to thrive. In trade it is a rarity, occasionally arriving as an accidental contaminant in consignments of other Chinese species, and it has not been bred in home aquaria.

Taxonomy & naming

Parabotia fasciatus was described by the French naturalist Pierre Dabry de Thiersant in 1872, based on specimens collected from Chinese rivers. The genus Parabotia belongs to the family Botiidae — the botiid loaches, a group that also encompasses Botia, Chromobotia, Yasuhikotakia and the Chinese genera Sinibotia and Leptobotia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the global authority for valid fish names, lists the current combination as Parabotia fasciatus (Dabry de Thiersant, 1872), with Cobitidae sometimes cited as the family in older references; the genus is correctly placed in Botiidae.

FishBase records the species under Parabotia fasciatus (with the masculine-adjectival ending), but the feminine form Parabotia fasciatus reflects the gender agreement of the genus name as treated by the Catalog of Fishes, and is the form used here. The specific epithet fasciata derives from the Latin fascia, meaning band or stripe, referring to the species' distinctive lateral banding.

This fish was long listed as Parabotia fasciata; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Parabotia, and the current combination Parabotia fasciatus is followed here.

Morphology

Parabotia fasciatus is a moderately elongate, somewhat laterally compressed loach with a pointed snout and an arched dorsal profile. It reaches a standard length of around 7.1–7.5 in — a substantial size for a Chinese botiid, making it one of the larger members of the genus. The body is cream to pale golden on the flanks and decorated with a series of dark brown to blackish vertical bands or blotches running from the dorsal surface partway down the sides, giving rise to the epithet fasciata and its common name "banded loach."

Like every member of the family Botiidae, Parabotia fasciatus carries a sharp, erectile spine set in a groove beneath each eye — the suborbital spine that can be flicked outward as a defence against predators, that readily snags nets, and that can nick an incautious hand. The skin is near-scaleless: tiny, deeply embedded scales leave the surface effectively smooth to the touch. This last feature is of direct practical significance because it greatly reduces the fish's capacity to resist chemical uptake, making it sensitive to copper and to full-strength dosing of many aquarium medications.

Habitat

Parabotia fasciatus is native to China, where it inhabits flowing freshwater rivers and streams. The species favours fast-to-medium-flow watercourses with good aeration, rocky substrates and the shelter of submerged stones and debris. Loaches Online records preferred conditions of 68–75 °F, pH 7.0–8.0 and medium hardness up to around 12 dH — placing it firmly in the subtropical rather than tropical zone, consistent with its Chinese highland and lowland river habitats.

FishBase lists the temperature range as 68–79 °F, confirming that Parabotia fasciatus is a cool-to-warm subtropical fish rather than a tropical one. It is not a brackish-water species, nor is it a warm lowland fish requiring the consistently high temperatures of Borneo or Mekong valley loaches. Clean, well-oxygenated, moderately flowing fresh water is essential — this is not a fish for stagnant, poorly aerated aquaria.

Feeding

As a botiid loach, Parabotia fasciatus is an omnivore that forages primarily for small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and molluscs, including snails. Like other loaches it uses its sensitive barbels to probe the substrate for food and is most active during the twilight and nocturnal hours. In the aquarium it will accept a wide range of sinking prepared foods, including pellets and wafers, and benefits from regular offerings of frozen or live bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp.

Its taste for snails makes it a genuinely useful member of a community that struggles with pest snail infestations. Where a group of Parabotia fasciatus is kept, snail populations tend to be kept in check by the fish's persistent nocturnal foraging. Feeding generously enough for all fish in a social group to get their share is important; a post-lights-out feed suits the species' partly nocturnal habits and ensures subordinate fish are not outcompeted by bolder tank mates.

Mating

Little is documented about the reproductive behaviour of Parabotia fasciatus in detail, but as a botiid loach it conforms to the broad pattern of the family. Sexing is likely to be difficult: botiids generally show subtle external dimorphism at best, with ripe females becoming noticeably fuller-bodied when in breeding condition, while the two sexes are otherwise very similar in outward appearance. In the wild, spawning in botiids is tied to seasonal flood cycles: rising water levels, increased flow and associated changes in temperature and water chemistry cue upstream breeding migrations.

For a subtropical Chinese river fish like Parabotia fasciatus, seasonal temperature fluctuations — cooler winters and warmer summers — likely serve as an additional spawning trigger on top of the hydrological cues. Recreating these conditions in a home aquarium is essentially not achievable with standard equipment, which is part of why the species has not been bred in captivity.

Breeding

Parabotia fasciatus has not been bred in home aquaria. Like other botiids it is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: spawning fish scatter eggs into flowing water during seasonal flood migrations, and neither parent guards eggs or larvae. The combination of the species' large adult size, difficulty in determining sex, need for a seasonal flood-migration trigger, and its overall rarity in the trade means verified captive spawnings are unknown.

The commercial supply of Chinese botiid loaches is not derived from deliberate aquaculture of this species; Parabotia fasciatus reaches the trade only sporadically, as accidental inclusions in collections of other Chinese fish. Keepers should not expect to breed this species under normal aquarium conditions. The correct picture is: egg-scatterer, no parental care, not bred in home aquaria.

In the aquarium

Parabotia fasciatus is described by those who have kept it as a peaceable, sociable loach that does well when given companions of its own kind. Like all botiids it is obligate-social: kept alone or in pairs it becomes withdrawn or anxious, and a group of five or more is needed for normal behaviour — in a group the fish form a hierarchy, forage together and make use of the whole tank. An aquarium of 26–32 US gal or more is appropriate for a small group, given that adults can reach nearly 7.5 in.

Because it is near-scaleless, Parabotia fasciatus absorbs medications readily and is sensitive to copper and to full-dose treatments. It is likely to be among the first fish to show signs of ich in a tank, yet one of those that tolerates standard treatments least well — half-doses and copper-free medications are advisable. The tank should provide fast-to-medium water flow with strong surface agitation, a good filter producing clean well-oxygenated water, and rocky hiding places or sections of pipe and smooth stone the fish can retreat into. Fine sand or smooth gravel is preferable to sharp substrate, which can damage the sensitive undersurface. A tight-fitting cover is essential, as loaches are capable jumpers.

Water temperature in the subtropical range of 68–75 °F suits this species best — it should not be kept in the high tropical temperatures used for Borneo or Mekong valley loaches. Regular water changes of 30–50% weekly help maintain the low organic load this species requires.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Parabotia fasciatus as Least Concern (2022), reflecting a stable population with no documented threatening factors at the scale that would justify a higher category. The species is relatively widespread within China, occurring across several river drainages, and no major population decline has been recorded.

That said, China's freshwater fish fauna faces broadly shared pressures: river regulation, dam construction, water extraction for agriculture and industry, pollution from runoff and industrial discharge, and the introduction of non-native species. For an occasional and sporadic trade species like Parabotia fasciatus, wild-caught individuals represent essentially the entire commercial supply — there is no known captive breeding programme. If demand were ever to increase significantly, the reliance on wild collection would bear watching, though at current levels of trade the species' conservation outlook appears stable.
