Taxonomy & naming
The species was first described by Edward Blyth in 1860, and the parentheses around his name signal that it has since been moved out of his original genus. It has long circulated in the hobby and literature as Paracanthocobitis zonalternans, and some recent taxonomic treatments — reflected on hobbyist references such as Seriously Fish — place it instead in Paracanthocobitis, one of several genera carved out of the old, catch-all Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex as the family has been repeatedly revised. This article keeps the widely used combination Paracanthocobitis zonalternans; keepers researching the fish may also see it listed as Paracanthocobitis zonalternans in newer sources.
It sits in Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loach family — by far the largest family of true loaches, with hundreds of small, often narrowly distributed species across Eurasia. The genus Acanthocobitis, as usually circumscribed, holds a handful of similar Indo-Burmese species including A. urophthalmus, A. rubidipinnis and A. botia.
This fish was long listed as Acanthocobitis zonalternans; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Paracanthocobitis, and the current combination Paracanthocobitis zonalternans is followed here.
Morphology
This is a slender, cylindrical stone loach with a pointed snout and the barbels typical of the family, reaching a modest maximum of roughly 2.8–3.1 in standard length (most individuals stay smaller). Its common name comes from the pattern for which it is named: alternating dark saddle-like bars or blotches along the flank, on a pale to olive ground colour, giving a broken, zoned appearance rather than a single continuous stripe.
Like other nemacheilids it lacks the prominent erectile suborbital spine of the botiid loaches (clown, yoyo, skunk and their kin) — that structure is a Botiidae feature, not a Nemacheilidae one. Its skin, however, carries the same near-scaleless, thin-skinned condition common across true loaches, which matters for how it should be handled and medicated in the aquarium.
Habitat
Paracanthocobitis zonalternans is native to a swath of South and Southeast Asia: recorded from Manipur in northeastern India, south through Myanmar, and into western and peninsular Thailand, with a possible extension into mainland Peninsular Malaysia. It has been documented across several major river systems, including the Brahmaputra, Salween, Irrawaddy, Tapi and Mae Klong basins. The type locality is a small stream, Huai Mae Charno, in the Salween basin of Tak Province, Thailand.
It lives in shallow riffles over pebbly, gravel or sand-and-stone substrates in clear, flowing hillstreams and rivers, favouring reaches with complex structure from rocks and roots but generally avoiding the steepest mountain torrents. This is cool-to-mild, well-oxygenated running water, not warm still blackwater — reported ranges span roughly 64–77 °F with a soft-to-medium-hard, slightly acidic to neutral chemistry (pH about 6.0-7.5).
Feeding
In the wild this is a bottom-foraging micro-predator, working the substrate for insect larvae and other small invertebrates that shelter among the stones of its riffle habitat. It also takes detritus incidentally while grazing.
In the aquarium it is an easy feeder that takes most sinking foods readily: bloodworm, brine shrimp (Artemia) and Daphnia in live or frozen form, along with sinking pellets and wafers. As with most benthic loaches, food needs to reach the bottom — it will generally ignore food that stays in the water column, and flake alone is a poor match for its natural feeding style.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism is reported and usable: males develop brighter coloration in the fins, particularly the dorsal fin, while females grow larger and heavier-bodied, especially when carrying eggs. Males are also described as aggressive toward rival males, consistent with some level of competition around spawning.
Specific courtship behaviour has not been well documented in the sources available, but the species is reported to be a prolific breeder under aquarium conditions relative to most loaches — a combination of a compact adult size, tolerance of stable tank conditions and an egg-scattering strategy that does not require elaborate cave or territory setup.
Breeding
Paracanthocobitis zonalternans is an egg-scatterer with no parental care, consistent with the stone and brook loach pattern: eggs are released and left to develop unguarded rather than tended in a nest or cave. Where most nemacheilids are rarely if ever bred in captivity, this species stands out as a genuine exception — it has reportedly spawned successfully in home aquaria, producing as many as 300 eggs in a single event. Eggs hatch in roughly 24-36 hours, and fry become free-swimming within about three days of hatching, a fast developmental pace typical of small stream-spawning cyprinoids and loaches.
Even so, deliberately conditioning and triggering a spawn is not routine or well standardised in the hobby, and reported successes likely follow from simply keeping healthy adults in good, stable, well-oxygenated water rather than a specific induced protocol. Keepers hoping to breed the species should not expect guaranteed results, but it is a realistic goal in a way that is not true for most of its relatives.
In the aquarium
This is one of the more approachable and peaceful stone loaches in the trade, described as a good addition to communities of small, stream-dwelling fish — it associates well with peaceful schooling cyprinids and other rheophilic (current-loving) loaches such as Gastromyzon, Pseudogastromyzon, Beaufortia and Sewellia, as well as less territorial nemacheilids. A tank of at least around 34 US gal with strong flow and high oxygenation suits it well, furnished with smooth gravel and pebbles, driftwood and rockwork to recreate its riffle habitat, and a filter turning over the water several times an hour.
Water should stay on the cool-to-mild, clean side: roughly 64–77 °F, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard. Being thin-skinned and effectively scaleless like other true loaches, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, so any medicating should be done cautiously and at reduced dosing, with close observation. Kept in these conditions with appropriate tankmates, it is a hardy, active and rewarding small loach for a dedicated hillstream or Asian biotope setup.
Conservation
Paracanthocobitis zonalternans is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, reflecting a fairly wide distribution across multiple river systems in India, Myanmar and Thailand. It does not appear to face the acute, single-stream endemism pressures that threaten many of its Nemacheilidae relatives.
As with most small stream loaches in the trade, wild collection for the aquarium hobby is likely a contributing supply source alongside any captive breeding, though no specific population decline tied to the trade has been documented in the sources reviewed here. Broader risks to hillstream habitats across its range — damming, siltation and water quality degradation from agricultural and urban development — are the more general long-term concern for species in this habitat guild.
