Taxonomy & naming
Sunder Lal Hora described this species in 1929, originally as Nemacheilus acuticephalus, from material collected in the upper Chaungmagyi River, a left-bank tributary of the Irrawaddy in Myanmar. As with many stone loaches from South and Southeast Asia, the broad old genus Nemacheilus (sometimes spelled Noemacheilus) was extensively revised over the following decades, and this species was later transferred into Schistura, the genus that now holds the great majority of Asian stone loaches. The Catalog of Fishes lists it as Schistura acuticephala (Hora, 1929); an alternative spelling, Schistura acuticephala, also appears in some records.
Schistura is by far the largest genus in Nemacheilidae, with well over 200 described species spread across South, Southeast and East Asia, and new species are still being described from remote headwater streams every year. Against that backdrop, S. acuticephala is unremarkable in one sense — a typical small stream endemic — and remarkable in another: it has apparently not been seen or collected since Hora's original description nearly a century ago, leaving its taxonomic identity secure but almost everything else about it unknown.
This fish was long listed as Schistura acuticephalus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Schistura, and the current combination Schistura acuticephala is followed here.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Schistura acuticephala beyond Hora's original 1929 description are not readily available, and no aquarium or field photographs of the species appear to be in wide circulation. What can be said comes from the genus: Schistura species are elongate, small-to-medium stone loaches with a rounded or slightly compressed body, a suborbital groove housing an erectile spine below the eye — a defensive feature shared across the wider loach superfamily — and skin that is effectively naked, since the scales, where present, are tiny and deeply embedded. Most congeners fall in the 1.2–5.9 in range, and given the size typical of Chaungmagyi-basin stone loaches, S. acuticephala is presumed to be a small species, though a confirmed maximum length has not been established from available sources.
The epithet acuticephalus — "sharp-headed" — points to a pointed or acute head shape as the diagnostic feature Hora used to separate it from its relatives, consistent with the elongate, streamlined head typical of fast-water Nemacheilidae that forage by probing into gravel and under stones.
Habitat
The only documented locality for this species is the upper Chaungmagyi River, a tributary of the Irrawaddy in Myanmar — cool, clear, fast-flowing mountain stream water typical of the Nemacheilidae as a family. Fish in this genus are creatures of well-oxygenated, rocky or stony-bottomed headwater streams, not of still or slow water, and there is no indication that S. acuticephala is any exception.
Because the species has not been recollected since 1929, nothing further is known about seasonal habitat use, elevation range, or whether the type locality still supports the population that was originally sampled. The honest summary is that this is a mountain-stream endemic of the upper Irrawaddy drainage in Myanmar, and that is essentially the full extent of the documented habitat picture.
Feeding
No feeding studies exist for Schistura acuticephala specifically, but its family membership is informative. Nemacheilid stone loaches are benthic micro-predators, working the streambed for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey — rather than grazing algae or biofilm. There is no reason to expect S. acuticephala to differ from this pattern.
In the absence of any aquarium history for the species, there is nothing to report about feeding behaviour in captivity; any care regimen would have to be extrapolated cautiously from well-documented Schistura relatives rather than from direct observation of this species.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura acuticephala. Stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae are not known for elaborate courtship; where breeding has been observed in the genus at all, it typically follows the simple pattern of egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, without pairing rituals or nest preparation.
With no post-1929 records of this species in the wild and no aquarium population to observe, there is no basis for describing sex differences, spawning triggers or seasonal timing specific to S. acuticephala. Data here is sparse to the point of being effectively absent.
Breeding
Breeding ecology for this species is undocumented. What can be said is drawn from the family as a whole: Nemacheilidae stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast, well-oxygenated water, with no parental care afterward. They are rarely bred in captivity, and most species — including the great majority of Schistura — have no recorded aquarium spawning at all.
Given that Schistura acuticephala has not been seen since its original 1929 collection, there is no aquarium population from which a spawning could even be attempted. The honest statement for this species is simply that its breeding biology is unknown, and that it should be assumed to follow the unassisted, no-parental-care egg-scattering pattern typical of its family until direct evidence says otherwise.
In the aquarium
Schistura acuticephala has no documented aquarium history. It does not appear to be, or to have ever been, in the ornamental trade, and no husbandry notes, tank reports or hobbyist accounts of the species could be located. Any care recommendation would be speculation rather than grounded fact, so none is offered here beyond what applies to the wider genus: Schistura species generally need cool-to-moderate, clean, fast-moving, highly oxygenated water over a rocky or gravel substrate, and — being effectively scaleless like other loaches — are typically sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments.
For a keeper interested in true Schistura stone loaches, better-documented and more readily available congeners are the appropriate choice; S. acuticephala itself is, on current evidence, not a fish anyone can responsibly keep, because no one appears to have kept it.
Conservation
Schistura acuticephala is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List (2018 assessment). This reflects the near-total absence of information since its 1929 description: no confirmed post-description records, no population trend data, and no assessment of ongoing threats to the Chaungmagyi River or the wider upper Irrawaddy drainage where it was found.
That data gap is itself a conservation concern rather than a reassurance — a species not seen for nearly a century could be extinct, persisting unnoticed in a remote headwater, or simply under-surveyed, and Data Deficient status should not be read as a clean bill of health. Renewed survey work in the upper Chaungmagyi River would be needed to determine whether the species still exists and what pressures, if any, its habitat faces.
