Acanthicus adonis starts its aquarium career as a jewel: a dark fish peppered with white dots, with a lyre-tailed caudal fin trailing filamentous extensions that make it look more like an ornament than a catfish. It ends that career — if its keeper does not plan ahead — as a problem: a potentially metre-long armoured predator with pectoral spines like ice picks, a territorial disposition, and a biomass that dwarfs most home aquariums. No loricariid sold in the trade demands more honest advance planning than this one.

Taxonomy & naming

Acanthicus adonis was described by Isaäc J.H. Isbrücker and Han Nijssen in 1988, published in Die Aquarien- und Terrarienzeitschrift (DATZ), volume 41, number 6, page 166. The type locality is the Rio Tocantins at Cametá (0°14'S, 49°30.5'W), state of Pará, northern Brazil; the holotype is deposited at the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam. Because the species was described in the genus Acanthicus — where it remains valid — no parenthetical authority is used. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Acanthicus adonis Isbrücker & Nijssen, 1988 with no synonyms.

L155 is the German aquarium-press trade number most often applied to this fish; the same number is also used loosely in the trade for the closely related A. hystrix, the type species of the genus and an earlier-described congener (Agassiz, 1829), causing persistent identification confusion. (PlanetCatfish's Cat-eLog assigns no formal L-number to A. adonis itself and treats L193 and L407 as separate, undescribed Acanthicus.) Acanthicus is placed within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae. The genus is characterised by its extreme spination, lyre-tailed caudal morphology, and very large adult size — characters shared with A. hystrix but distinguished in A. adonis by juvenile polka-dot patterning, caudal filament length, and body proportions.

Albino forms circulate occasionally in the trade and have been bred in small numbers, but these are colour morphs of the nominal species, not a separate taxon.

Morphology

Acanthicus adonis is among the largest loricariids in the world. Seriously Fish gives the maximum standard length as 23.5–39.5 in (23.5–39.5 in SL), while FishBase records a more conservative figure; the Seriously Fish range represents the reported size spectrum including very large wild adults. Most aquarium specimens are measured in the 12–23.5 in range as maintained fish, but wild individuals in the Tocantins reportedly exceed 31.5–35.5 in, and the 39.5 in upper figure represents verified exceptional specimens. This is not a fish for any conventional home aquarium.

The body is elongate and moderately slender for a large loricariid, heavily armoured dorsally with scutes bearing very dense, sharp odontodes; the ventral surface is unarmoured and soft. The caudal fin is deeply forked and carries long filamentous extensions on the dorsal and ventral lobes — the 'lyre tail' of the common name — that can become significantly elongated in mature males. The pectoral fin leading spines are massively developed, especially in males, and are locked capable of causing serious injury; the interopercular region in males bears an extensive field of elongated, outward-pointing odontodes ('whiskers') that increase with maturity.

Colouration is strikingly age-dependent. Juveniles are dark grey to black with numerous bright white or cream dots distributed across the head, body, and fins — the 'polka-dot' pattern. With maturity, particularly in males, the spots gradually fade and the fish becomes progressively darker, with large adults often appearing uniformly dark grey-black with only faint remnant spotting or none at all. The caudal fin filaments retain pale banding. This dramatic colour change is one reason adults command lower prices in the trade than juveniles despite being far more impressive animals biologically.

Habitat

The type locality of Acanthicus adonis is the Rio Tocantins at Cametá, state of Pará, northern Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes records the range as the lower Tocantins River basin and the upper Amazon basin, across Brazil and Peru, while FishBase lists only the lower Tocantins basin. Very large, similar-looking Acanthicus are exported from as far afield as Amazonian Peru and are traded as A. adonis, but whether these western records are conspecific with Cametá-type fish is not firmly established (Seriously Fish). The article therefore treats the confirmed core range as the lower-to-middle Tocantins, with Peruvian upper-Amazon material attributed to the species tentatively.

A. adonis inhabits slower-moving sections of large rivers and larger tributaries, often in association with human settlement areas (port structures, wharves, partially submerged vegetation) according to Seriously Fish. This preference distinguishes it somewhat from the fast-water cactus plecos of the Pseudacanthicus lineage. The species is found in both white-water (sediment-rich, nutrient-moderate) and clear-water systems. Water conditions typical of the lower Tocantins: temperature 73–81 °F (FishBase), pH 6.0–7.0, soft to moderately hard water (dH 5–12).

The lower Tocantins habitat has been significantly altered by the Tucuruí Dam (completed 1984), one of the world's largest hydroelectric impoundments, which flooded approximately 2,544 mi² of the middle Tocantins, inundating large areas of river habitat. The extent of impact on A. adonis populations is not formally assessed.

Feeding

Acanthicus adonis is a generalised omnivore-detritivore. Based on gut content work with allied loricariids and aquarium observations, the wild diet includes detrital organic matter, biofilm and periphyton scraped from hard substrates, along with invertebrates and likely carrion and plant matter in seasonally flooded areas. It is not a strict carnivore or a strict herbivore, but the dietary composition across its size range leans toward the omnivore-opportunist end of the loricariid spectrum.

In the aquarium, adults accept a broad range of sinking foods: catfish tablets and wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables (courgette, sweet potato, pumpkin), and meaty foods including bloodworm, earthworms, prawn, cockles, mussels and fish pieces. Variety is important; a monotonous diet of a single food type is nutritionally insufficient for a large, long-lived fish. Algae wafers are accepted but should not be the sole offering. Bogwood supplementation is beneficial for fibre and biofilm.

Large adults are vigorous, competitive feeders and will displace other fish from food; their size and extensive spination means tankmates can be injured during competitive feeding interactions even without direct aggression. Feeding at multiple sites simultaneously, or targeting the pleco's food after lights-out, helps reduce competition-related stress in a community setting.

Mating

Captive breeding of Acanthicus adonis is extremely rare, primarily because the tank size requirements for housing two large adults are prohibitive for virtually all private aquarists; the few breeding records available come from large public aquariums and a small number of specialist hobbyists with facilities exceeding 2,0.5 US gal.

Based on the available hobbyist records and observations of allied Ancistrini, A. adonis is a cave spawner. Males establish and defend cave territories among large boulders, submerged root masses or similar substantial structures. Male-to-male aggression is intense: the combination of extreme size, locking pectoral spines, elongated interopercular odontodes, and strong territorial drive makes conspecific encounters potentially seriously injurious. More than one male can only be housed together in exceptional facilities with completely separated visual territories.

Females are attracted to established cave sites; the male directs the female into the cave and spawning occurs inside. Conditioning adults for spawning is a prolonged process requiring correct water temperature cycling, consistent water quality, and sustained protein-rich feeding. No detailed published primary literature on the species-specific courtship sequence is available; descriptions derive from hobbyist reports.

Breeding

Confirmed captive breeding reports for Acanthicus adonis are sparse. The mode, consistent with other large Ancistrini, is cave-spawning with paternal brood care: the male remains with the clutch inside the cave, fanning and guarding. Based on the few available records and comparison with the genus, clutch sizes are relatively small (tens to low hundreds of eggs), consistent with a species that invests heavily per offspring. Eggs are large.

Fry are large at hatch, retaining yolk reserves for several days. Once free-swimming they begin accepting biofilm, algae, and small sinking foods immediately. Growth rate is substantial in well-fed juveniles but the species is relatively slow to reach sexual maturity given its potential adult size. The caudal filaments and polka-dot pattern are present in juveniles from an early stage; the dots begin fading in males as the fish reaches large sub-adult size.

Raising fry requires excellent water quality — large fish produce significant waste, and the aquarium housing breeding adults must be comprehensively filtered. Fry sensitivity to ammonia and nitrite is high. The male should remain with the brood unless egg predation is observed; paternal guarding is beneficial for egg survival in this group.

In the aquarium

The single most important fact about keeping Acanthicus adonis is the adult size. This is a fish that can exceed 31.5–39.5 in standard length. A typical home aquarium is not a viable long-term home for an adult. The purchase decision must be made with a concrete plan for housing the fish at full size — either a purpose-built very large aquarium (minimum 600 × 78.5 in base, per Seriously Fish recommendations for an adult), a pond, or surrender to a specialist facility before the fish outgrows its tank.

Juveniles of 4–6 in are sold and are manageable in aquariums of 80–105 US gal for a limited period; but growth is rapid under good conditions, and the fish that arrived at 4.5 in is a 15.5 in animal two years later and potentially 23.5–31.5 in within five years. Each stage requires a larger home. Many A. adonis end up in undersized tanks as their keepers underestimate the trajectory.

For the rare aquarist with appropriate facilities, the species is not exceptionally difficult in terms of water parameters: temperature 73–86 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard, strong filtration. What it requires is physical space, multiple large cave structures, and near-zero tolerance for poor water quality in mature fish. A companion fish must be large enough not to be injured by the pleco's spines and uninterested in competing for the cave territory. Large South American cichlids, large doradid catfish, and large schooling fish are workable in sufficient space.

The lyre-tail filaments — one of the species' most attractive features — are fragile and frequently damaged in undersized or poorly structured aquariums. Providing adequate unobstructed swimming space and smooth-edged décor helps preserve them. Do not purchase this species unless the full adult-size housing plan is already in place.

Conservation

Acanthicus adonis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN Red List (assessment September 2020). The assessment reflects the species' moderately broad distribution across the lower Amazon basin and available trade data suggesting no evidence of severe population decline at the global scale. FishBase also records the LC status from the same 2020 assessment.

Precautionary concerns exist despite the LC listing. The lower Rio Tocantins — the type locality and a core part of the known range — was significantly altered by the Tucuruí Dam's inundation of river habitat in 1984. The geographic distribution, while not confined to a single river, has not been comprehensively surveyed; the species is rarely collected in large numbers, suggesting either natural rarity at any given site or a patchy distribution that is not reflected in the LC assessment. The ornamental trade exports individuals regularly, primarily from Brazil and Peru, but harvest pressure relative to wild abundance is undocumented.

Given the species' low reproductive rate (large, sparsely reproducing fish), long time to maturity, and dependence on specific riverine microhabitats, precautionary sourcing of captive-bred specimens is advisable where available. Captive breeding of A. adonis is uncommon, so most trade specimens are wild-caught; this places a direct premium on responsible acquisition and long-term commitment to housing the fish appropriately for its full natural lifespan.
