Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus jelskii was originally described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1876 in the Sitzungsberichte der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften (Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe, vol. 72, p. 603), based on syntypes collected at Amable Maria and Monterico, Peru — localities in the Tulumayo River drainage that drains into the Río Perené, itself a tributary of the upper Ucayali. The original combination was Chaetostomus jelskii; the current combination Ancistrus jelskii was established by Isbrücker (1980) when he revised the genus.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; updated 10 June 2026) recognises Ancistrus jelskii (Steindachner 1876) as a valid species in Loricariidae: Hypostominae, restricted to the Tulumayo River drainage of the upper Ucayali basin, Peru. FishBase adds a caveat that the species 'often [has been] considered a synonym of Ancistrus bufonius' and that its validity 'needs confirmation'; the two taxa are morphologically close but geographically distinct, and most recent workers treat them as separate (Fisch-Muller in Reis et al. 2003; Chuctaya et al. 2022). No L-number has been assigned, which is consistent with a species that is essentially unknown in the trade.
Within Loricariidae, Ancistrus is placed in tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae — the same tribe as Hypancistrus, Baryancistrus, and Peckoltia (Armbruster 2004). The genus is diagnosed by the distinctive interopercular odontodes (cheek spines) that are hooked, and by the fleshy tentacles that develop on the snouts of sexually mature individuals, particularly males.
Morphology
Ancistrus jelskii is a small loricariid, reaching approximately 3 in total length (FishBase) and 3 in SL (PlanetCatfish), placing it firmly in the dwarf-bristlenose size class. The body plan is that of a typical Ancistrus: a broad, depressed head with a ventrally placed suckermouth, a body covered in interlocking bony scutes arranged in lateral rows, a high-set dorsal fin with a strong spine, and well-developed paired fins — pectoral and pelvic — used for bracing against current.
Colour, as with many Andean Ancistrus, is likely a dark brown to slate-grey base overlaid with small pale spots or irregular lighter mottling, offering camouflage against rocky substrates. No published photographic record exists for this species (FishBase and PlanetCatfish both note no image available), so precise colour description requires caution.
The most distinctive feature of mature individuals is the soft, bushy tentacles on the snout, which are far more developed in males than in females. In females, tentacles are reduced or absent on the snout rim but may appear along the lateral edges. Interopercular odontodes — short, hooked spines on the cheek plate — are present in both sexes but become more pronounced in males during the breeding season. Males can also be distinguished from females by a slightly broader head relative to body width and by genital papilla shape. FishBase notes this species is facultative or obligate air-breathing, a trait shared with many Hypostominae inhabiting fluctuating Andean streams.
Habitat
Ancistrus jelskii is endemic to the Tulumayo River drainage in the upper Ucayali basin of Peru (CoF; Fisch-Muller in Reis et al. 2003; Chuctaya et al. 2022). The Tulumayo is a right-bank tributary of the Perené River, draining the eastern slopes of the Andes in the Junín department at elevations where the cloud forest grades into the lower montane zone. Typical Andean stream habitats here consist of fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over cobble, gravel, and bedrock substrates, often with submerged wood and leaf packs accumulated behind boulders.
Water chemistry in such cloud-forest drainages at moderate elevation tends to be soft to moderately hard (conductivity 50–300 µS), slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–7.5), and cool by lowland Amazonian standards — water temperatures in upland Ucayali tributaries can range from roughly 64–77 °F seasonally, with peaks during the dry season (May–September) and cooler temperatures during the wet season (October–April) when Andean rainfall dilutes and cools the streams. Substrate is rocky and the current is brisk, meaning dissolved oxygen is near saturation.
The IUCN (2014) assessed the species as Data Deficient, explicitly because of limited information on its range, population status, and the threats affecting it. While the type locality area lies in a region subject to colonisation, agriculture, and small-scale mining pressures, direct information about population trends is unavailable.
Feeding
Like all Ancistrus, A. jelskii is primarily a periphyton and biofilm feeder. In its native rocky, fast-water Andean habitat, it rasps the thin layer of algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and associated detritus from boulders, cobbles, and submerged wood surfaces. The ventrally placed mouth with its comb-like teeth is well adapted for this scraping mode of feeding, and the fish uses suction from the oral disc to maintain position against current while browsing.
Field data from IUCN (2014) specifically describe A. jelskii as a benthic fish that 'feeds on periphyton' on rocky or mixed gravel and sand substrate. This is consistent with the genus-level dietary characterisation across Ancistrus, where omnivorous flexibility exists — seasonal consumption of detritus, organic matter, and opportunistic invertebrates supplements the algae-dominated diet — but plant-based material forms the bulk of intake.
In the aquarium, the species should be treated like other Ancistrus: a primarily herbivorous diet based on algae wafers, spirulina discs, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato, green leaf matter). Small amounts of invertebrate foods can be offered occasionally. Driftwood should be available for grazing and as a source of supplementary cellulose and gut flora.
Mating
No specific mating observations have been published for Ancistrus jelskii, and the species is effectively unknown in the hobby; PlanetCatfish records no breeding reports. Courtship can nonetheless be inferred from the well-studied genus biology. Male Ancistrus establish territories centred on a preferred cave or crevice — beneath a rock overhang, within a hollow log, or inside a tight crevice between boulders — and defend these sites against rival males. Competition between males is manifest primarily through display of interopercular odontodes and the distinctive snout tentacles rather than sustained fighting, though brief mouth-locking can occur at territory boundaries.
Conditioned females, recognisable by a broader abdominal profile and a rounded, swollen genital papilla, are courted and guided toward the spawning site. In stream-dwelling Ancistrus the male's role is to select and prepare the cave, attract and mate with females, and then guard the resulting clutch — females do not provide post-spawning parental care. The combination of strong current, rocky substrate, and variable seasonal chemistry in Andean drainages likely triggers spawning in coordination with wet-season conditions, though this is extrapolated from related taxa rather than direct observation.
Breeding
Ancistrus jelskii has not been bred in captivity to any documented degree; PlanetCatfish holds no breeding report for this species. The breeding biology can be inferred from the genus as a whole, however, given that Ancistrus is among the most frequently captive-bred pleco groups.
All Ancistrus are cave-spawners with paternal brood care (PlanetCatfish). The male guards a cavity, fertilises the eggs deposited on the interior wall by the female, then fans and guards the clutch continuously until hatching, removing infertile or fungused eggs. Clutch size in the genus varies considerably with female size; in small Ancistrus species clutches typically range from a few dozen to ~100 eggs. Eggs are pale to orange-yellow and adhesive. Incubation at warm temperatures (72–79 °F) typically takes 5–7 days, with fry becoming free-swimming within a few days of hatching. The male guards fry until they disperse.
For aquarists who acquire A. jelskii, replicating Andean conditions — moderate current, slightly cool and clean water (68–75 °F), slightly acidic to neutral pH, and rocky decor with crevices — would be the logical approach to encouraging spawning, based on the species' natural habitat.
In the aquarium
Ancistrus jelskii is essentially absent from the aquarium trade. It carries no L-number and is not listed as available by any commercial supplier. The combination of a Data Deficient IUCN status, an obscure and geographically restricted distribution (Tulumayo drainage, upper Ucayali, Peru), and a contested taxonomic identity relative to Ancistrus bufonius means it would only be encountered by dedicated collectors working with Peruvian wild-caught material, if at all.
For those who do obtain confirmed A. jelskii, the care requirements align with small, current-loving Ancistrus from Andean foothill streams. A 15–20 US gal tank with strong filtration, significant water movement (powerhead or spray bar), and rocky decor would be appropriate. Temperature should be kept on the cooler end of the Ancistrus range: 68–75 °F. Water chemistry should approximate soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Driftwood is recommended, both for grazing and as shelter.
Diet should be vegetable-forward: algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables. Clean water is more important than perfect water chemistry — these mountain-stream fish evolved in well-oxygenated, dilute, rapidly exchanging water. Keeping nitrates low through regular water changes and avoiding overfeeding are more important than hitting specific pH targets.
The taxonomic uncertainty (potential synonym of A. bufonius) means any specimens should be documented with photographs and locality data if sourced from wild collections.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus jelskii as Data Deficient (DD) in 2014, citing a lack of information on its range, population status, and threats. The species is endemic to the Tulumayo River drainage in the upper Ucayali basin of Peru, a relatively small footprint that concentrates any risk.
The Tulumayo valley and the broader Junín and Pasco departments in central Peru have experienced substantial agricultural expansion, road construction, and colonisation pressure over recent decades. The adjacent Chanchamayo and Perené valleys have seen coffee, cacao, and tropical fruit cultivation replace cloud-forest habitat. Sedimentation from deforestation and small-scale gold mining upstream can degrade the clear, rocky habitats that Ancistrus species depend on. How severely A. jelskii has been affected is unknown due to insufficient survey work.
A complicating factor is the taxonomic uncertainty flagged by FishBase: if A. jelskii proves synonymous with A. bufonius after rigorous revision, the conservation picture may change. Ancistrus bufonius has a broader, less well-defined distribution in Bolivia and adjacent Peru, and a different conservation profile. Until a morphological and molecular revision resolves the relationship between these taxa, both the distribution and the conservation status of A. jelskii remain genuinely uncertain. Additional field surveys and specimen-based taxonomic work are needed before a meaningful threat assessment is possible.
