Taxonomy & naming
The species now known as Aphanotorulus emarginatus was originally described by Achille Valenciennes in 1840, in volume 15 of the monumental 'Histoire naturelle des poissons' (Cuvier & Valenciennes), page 500. The holotype (MNHN A-9447, a dry specimen) has a type locality stated only as 'probably from Brazil' — an imprecision typical of early nineteenth-century museum material. It was first assigned to Plecostomus, then passed through Hypostomus (where it spent most of the twentieth century), then Squaliforma (Isbrücker et al. 2001), before reaching its current placement.
The current valid combination, Aphanotorulus emarginatus (Valenciennes 1840), was established by Ray and Armbruster in their 2016 Zootaxa revision 'The genera Isorineloricaria and Aphanotorulus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) with description of a new species' (Zootaxa 4072(5): 501–539). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, updated June 2026) accepts this combination as valid. Earlier combinations — Hypostomus emarginatus, Squaliforma emarginata — are synonyms.
The species acquired the L-numbers L011, L035, L108, and L116 independently in German aquarium magazines before these fish were united under a single name; PlanetCatfish now lists them all under Aphanotorulus emarginatus. Within its genus, A. emarginatus belongs to subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster 2004) and is separated from the superficially similar Isorineloricaria by its proportionally shorter, oval-section caudal peduncle and its small dark spots on a pale tan background.
Morphology
Aphanotorulus emarginatus is a large pleco, reaching approximately 13 in total length (TL) according to FishBase data, with PlanetCatfish reporting up to 15.5 in SL — placing it firmly in the 'large pleco' category, comparable in stature to mid-sized Pterygoplichthys. The body is depressed and notably flatter in cross-section than most Hypostominae, an appearance reinforced by a broad, low head profile. The dorsal surface and flanks bear small dark spots — typically less than half the diameter of the lateral scutes — on a pale tan to light brown background. This spotting pattern persists through all size classes and is a reliable field mark.
The posterior edge of the oral disc is distinctly jagged rather than smooth, a character diagnostic for the genus Aphanotorulus. The caudal fin is forked and, especially in males, develops elongated lower lobe filaments. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced: breeding males develop exceptionally elongate, bristle-like odontodes covering the back, flanks, and particularly the posterior body behind the dorsal fin. This gives conditioned males a striking 'hedgehog' appearance. Females are generally smoother-bodied and broader across the pelvic girdle when gravid.
Habitat
The species is broadly distributed across several major drainage basins: the upper Orinoco (excluding the Apure system), the Essequibo and its tributaries in Guyana, and large portions of the Amazon basin — including the Rio Negro, lower Rio Branco, Rio Tapajos, Rio Xingu, Rio Tocantins, Araguaia, and the upper Napo system in Ecuador and Peru. This represents one of the widest ranges of any Aphanotorulus species.
Within its range, the species uses a variety of riverine microhabitats. Field observations and hobbyist records from the Rio Xingu, Rio Branco, and Essequibo describe it living under tree roots and among rocks, emerging to the sandy shallows and gravel banks to feed at night — classic hypostomine nocturnal grazing behaviour. The preferred water temperature range is 75–82 °F (FishBase records 75–81 °F; PlanetCatfish lists 77–82 °F). Water chemistry is mildly acidic to neutral: pH 6.4–7.2, with very soft to moderately soft water (dH 5–6 on the PlanetCatfish sheet), consistent with blackwater and clearwater Amazon tributaries. The species is a facultative air-breather, an adaptation common among loricariids occupying warm, seasonally oxygen-variable floodplain environments.
Feeding
Aphanotorulus emarginatus is primarily an algae and aufwuchs grazer in nature. Like other large Hypostominae, it scrapes biofilm, algae, and fine organic matter from hard substrates — rocks, submerged wood, and compacted gravel — using its ventral suctorial mouth. The nocturnal emergence to sand banks described in historical accounts (Valenciennes 1840, cited in FishBase) suggests active foraging on open surfaces at night when predation risk is lower.
In the aquarium the fish proves a versatile and enthusiastic feeder. Blanched vegetables — courgette, sweet potato, cucumber, green peas — are eagerly consumed. Commercial algae wafers, spirulina pellets, and sinking catfish foods are accepted readily. Occasional meaty foods can be offered but should not dominate the diet; this species does not appear to be strongly carnivorous. Driftwood for rasping is beneficial and contributes to gut health. Given its ultimate size, portions must be adequate: an underfed large pleco will lose condition rapidly and may begin harassing other fish.
Mating
Courtship in Aphanotorulus emarginatus is not well documented in the aquarium hobby — no breeding reports are registered on PlanetCatfish. Based on the general biology of the Hypostominae and on the pronounced sexual dimorphism described for the genus, males in breeding condition develop the striking elongated odontodes across the posterior body and sides, likely functioning both as visual display cues and tactile signals. These odontodes are greatly enhanced compared to the modest odontode development of non-breeding males.
Males are assumed to be territorial around spawning sites, competing for access to suitable cavities or crevices in rocky substrate. The jagged oral disc — a shared genus character — may play a role in male–male agonistic displays, analogous to the locked-mouth wrestling seen in some other large loricariids. Given its large adult size, the species would require substantial cave structures for successful spawning in captivity.
Breeding
No verified captive breeding records are known for Aphanotorulus emarginatus — a reflection both of its large size (making suitable facilities rare) and its limited representation in specialist collections. Based on the genus characteristics and on what is known for comparably sized Hypostominae, the species is expected to be a cave-spawner with paternal brood care: the male guards and fans a clutch of adhesive eggs in a defended cavity until the fry are free-swimming and independent.
A breeding setup would require a very large aquarium (at minimum several hundred litres), suitable cave structures sized for a 12–15.5 in fish, excellent water quality, and well-conditioned adults fed a varied diet over an extended period. Seasonal cues — slight temperature reduction followed by warming, or increased water flow simulating the Amazonian flood pulse — might be required to trigger spawning. Serious attempts at captive breeding of this species have not been publicly documented in the English-language hobby literature as of this writing.
In the aquarium
Aphanotorulus emarginatus is an occasional import in the specialist pleco trade, appearing under its four L-numbers — L011 most commonly — and attracting attention primarily for the spectacular breeding-condition males. At up to 13–15.5 in it is a genuinely large fish, requiring a tank of at least 105–130 US gal for long-term adult maintenance; juveniles sold at 2–4 in will outgrow all but the largest community aquaria within two to three years.
The species is not suited to planted aquaria or small community tanks. It is best kept in large, sparsely decorated setups with smooth or rounded rockwork, driftwood, and strong filtration capable of handling the substantial waste output of a large omnivorous pleco. Water flow should be moderate to strong; the fish comes from well-oxygenated river systems and performs poorly in stagnant conditions. Temperature 77–82 °F, pH 6.4–7.2, soft to moderately soft water.
Intraspecific aggression is moderate: males in particular will contest territory. Keep singly or in large tanks where sight lines can be broken. The species is generally harmless toward dissimilar fish but may inadvertently dislodge or damage smaller tank inhabitants through its bulk. Suitable companions in large biotope setups include other Amazon or Orinoco species of comparable size: large characins, mid-sized cichlids such as Geophagus, and larger Doradidae.
Conservation
Aphanotorulus emarginatus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment 26 September 2020, Red List version 2025-2), reflecting its exceptionally wide distribution — spanning Brazil, Guyana, Peru, and Ecuador across three major drainage systems — and the absence of any documented population-level threats or declines. The species is collected for the ornamental trade in small numbers but has never been a target of large-scale commercial collection.
The scale of its distribution provides a degree of resilience not available to range-restricted Amazonian plecos. However, the Rio Xingu populations — where several PlanetCatfish underwater photographs originate — sit within a region that has experienced significant impacts from hydroelectric development (most notably the Belo Monte dam), which has altered flow regimes and substrate conditions for benthic fish communities. The Xingu is the most pressing conservation concern within this species' range; whether A. emarginatus populations there have been affected is not documented. The broader Amazon and Orinoco drainages remain more intact.
