Hypancistrus margaritatus is a jewel-box pleco discovered in the blackwater headwaters of the Takutu River in Guyana — one of only a handful of Hypancistrus found outside Brazil. Described formally in 2016 by Tan and Armbruster, it is distinguished from all its congeners by an unusually dense, consistently-sized field of pale white spots on a near-black body — a pattern the authors compared to a scattering of pearls, hence the name. At under 2 in SL, it is among the smallest formally described members of the genus, and its relative obscurity in the trade reflects both the remoteness of its origin and the difficulty of legally exporting specimens from Guyana.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypancistrus margaritatus was formally described by Milton Tan and Jonathan W. Armbruster in 2016 in the journal ZooKeys (issue 552, pages 123–135), from specimens collected in the Takutu River approximately 2 mi west of Saint Ignatius, Rio Branco, Rio Negro drainage, Amazon basin, Guyana (3.355°N, 59.831°W). The holotype (AUM 35610 / CSBD F1701) was a unique specimen held in the Auburn University Museum at the time of publication, with eventual transfer to the Guyana collection (CSBD) specified. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; updated June 2026) lists the name as valid: Hypancistrus margaritatus Tan & Armbruster 2016, with no synonyms.

The species circulates in the ornamental trade under the code L404, assigned after formal description; no earlier provisional L-number predated the description. Within Hypancistrus, the 2016 paper placed H. margaritatus alongside three other spotted species (H. inspector, H. lunaorum, H. contradens) and distinguished it by a combination of characters: the spots are consistently sized across the head and trunk, approximately equal to the nasal aperture in diameter; they are unusually numerous — the holotype shows 23 spots in a lateral horizontal series from snout tip to caudal peduncle base; and the interspot-to-spot-diameter ratio (1.0–1.6) is tighter than in any congener, creating the pearl-dense effect that names the fish. Hypancistrus is placed in tribe Ancistrini, subfamily Hypostominae, family Loricariidae (Armbruster 2004).

Morphology

Hypancistrus margaritatus is a small loricariid; the FishBase account records a maximum standard length of 2 in SL — the holotype was the only specimen examined in the original description, so the upper size limit may revise upward as more individuals are studied. The body follows the characteristic Hypancistrus plan: moderately depressed, broader across the head than the trunk, covered in keeled bony scutes in regular longitudinal rows. The ventral surface is largely unplated, with soft skin.

The diagnostic colour pattern — dense, small, pale white to cream spots on a dark brown to near-black ground — covers the entire dorsal surface, flanks, head, and all fins. Unlike H. inspector (where spots are large and widely spaced) or H. lunaorum (where spots are very small and even more numerous than in H. margaritatus), this species occupies a middle-range spot size that is nonetheless consistent from snout to caudal peduncle and tightly packed. The fins are darkly pigmented with spots extending onto the rays.

Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: mature males develop thicker, odontode-bearing first pectoral-fin rays and cheek odontodes that are noticeably reduced or absent in females. Females become broader through the mid-body when in breeding condition. The original description provides counts of 2 dorsal spines and 7 dorsal soft rays; 5 anal soft rays.

Habitat

The type locality — Takutu River, ca. 2 mi west of Saint Ignatius, Guyana — lies in the upper Branco sub-drainage of the Rio Negro system, near the Brazil–Guyana border at approximately 3.4°N, 59.8°W. The Takutu is a clear-to-slightly-blackwater river draining the Rupununi savannah; at low water it can run quite clear, while high-water floods carry dissolved organic material from surrounding vegetation. The Rio Branco–Rio Negro connection places H. margaritatus in the broader Amazonian blackwater biogeographic zone, though the Takutu itself is less extreme in water chemistry than the classic Rio Negro.

Field data from the type locality are not detailed in the original description. By analogy with other Hypancistrus in the region and with general Guyana-shield river conditions, the fish is likely associated with rocky substrates in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated sections; temperatures in the region typically range from 79–86 °F seasonally. The species is known only from the Takutu drainage in Guyana and is described as a Rio Branco drainage endemic; PlanetCatfish distribution data also list occurrences in the Branco (Roraima) and Lower Negro drainages, suggesting the range extends into adjacent Brazilian blackwaters.

Feeding

Like all Hypancistrus, H. margaritatus possesses reduced dentition — a modest number of slender, spatulate teeth arranged in short rows in both the premaxilla and dentary — which limits its ability to rasp epilithic algae in the manner of broad-toothed grazers like Hypostomus or Pterygoplichthys. The dietary preference across the genus is toward protein-rich invertebrate prey rather than plant material or algae; this is supported by the mouth morphology and by gut-content analyses of related species. In the wild, small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and detritus-associated organisms — likely dominate the diet.

In captivity, PlanetCatfish recommends feeding primarily meaty foods: high-quality frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and daphnia, along with sinking carnivore-formulated pellets or discus-food granules. Algae wafers and spirulina-based products can be offered as a minority supplement but should not form the dietary base. Care should be taken that this small, somewhat shy species actually reaches its food before more assertive tankmates; target-feeding with a pipette or turkey-baster during lights-out is an effective technique. A diet over-weighted toward plant matter is associated with poor condition and reduced longevity in Hypancistrus.

Mating

No specific observations of courtship behaviour for H. margaritatus have been published; the species was described only in 2016 and has a limited captive presence. Courtship is expected to follow the well-documented Hypancistrus pattern. Males establish and defend preferred rocky crevices or cave entrances within their territory, using interopercular odontodes — the recurved, cheek-mounted spines that give ancistrine loricariids much of their armament — in lateral displays and direct contact fighting against rival males. A conditioned male in breeding readiness shows a noticeably thickened first pectoral-fin ray and prominent cheek odontodes.

A ripe female, recognizable by her broader mid-body profile and smoother pectoral spine, is initially repelled from the male's territory but gradually tolerated as she comes to pre-spawning condition. In most Hypancistrus species, the male eventually draws or coaxes the female into the cave site; she deposits eggs on the ceiling or wall of the cavity, which the male then fertilises. Whether H. margaritatus's very small body size affects clutch size or the nature of the courtship interaction relative to larger congeners is not known.

Breeding

Breeding of H. margaritatus in captivity had been registered on PlanetCatfish (six breeding reports as of 2025) — a respectable number for a species barely a decade in the hobby. All Hypancistrus are obligate cave spawners: eggs are laid on the ceiling or back wall of a tight rock cavity, the male fertilises them, and then remains inside, fanning the clutch with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygen flow and periodically cleaning eggs with his mouth.

For closely related and similarly sized Hypancistrus species, clutch sizes typically range from a few dozen to around 100 eggs, which are pale yellow or amber, adhesive, and relatively large relative to adult body size. Incubation at typical tropical aquarium temperatures of 79–82 °F takes approximately 5–7 days. Newly hatched larvae carry a substantial yolk sac and remain in the cave for several more days before becoming free-swimming. The male provides continuous paternal care through this period, including in some cases removing infertile or fungused eggs. Fry begin feeding on biofilm and fine particles almost immediately on emerging, and small offerings of finely crushed dry food can supplement their diet.

Conditioning the pair on a high-protein diet, providing suitably tight cave structures (slate-chip caves or narrow ceramic tubes dimensioned to the fish), and maintaining clean water with occasional temperature variation of 34–36 °F appear to be the triggers most consistently cited by successful breeders.

In the aquarium

Hypancistrus margaritatus is a diminutive species well-suited to smaller aquaria, with its sub-2 in SL adult size making a 15–20 US gal tank adequate for a pair or trio. However, it is a specialist's fish: genuinely uncommon in the trade, not cheap when available, and with a dietary requirement for meaty foods that separates it from the 'algae-eating pleco' role with which loricariids are too often stereotyped.

Water quality must be high — strong filtration and weekly partial water changes of 25–30% are non-negotiable. The blackwater origin calls for soft, slightly acidic to neutral water: pH 5.5–7.2, conductivity below 200 µS/cm ideally, temperature 79–86 °F. In practice, H. margaritatus appears tolerant of slightly harder, more neutral water provided it is clean, but extremes of hardness or alkalinity should be avoided. As with all Hypancistrus, dissolved oxygen is critical; good surface agitation from filter outlet placement is more important than a particular pH value.

The aquascape should be rock-dominated, with multiple tight crevices and purpose-built cave structures. Driftwood can be added for visual interest and slight water-tanning, but it is not a dietary requirement for this species. Fine sand or smooth gravel is appropriate as a substrate. Tankmates should be peaceful, of comparable or smaller size, and non-territorial at the bottom level. The combination of small size, genuinely attractive spotted pattern, and cave-spawning behaviour makes H. margaritatus one of the more rewarding small plecos for the committed specialist.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypancistrus margaritatus as Data Deficient in November 2023, reflecting both the species' very recent formal description and the limited distributional and population data available. The type locality is in a geographically remote area of Guyana, and the overall extent of the range in the Takutu and adjacent Branco drainages is not well characterised. Data Deficient does not imply that the species is not at risk; it means current knowledge is insufficient to make a threat assessment.

Guyana's interior rivers are, by global standards, still relatively intact. The Rupununi region faces modest agricultural pressure and some artisanal gold-mining activity, the latter capable of raising sediment loads and altering water chemistry in affected drainages. Like many small ornamental loricariids, H. margaritatus is potentially vulnerable to over-collection if demand in the aquarium trade increases and access to its habitat improves. No captive-breeding programme has been established outside the aquarium hobby. The rarity of this species in trade and the practical challenges of reaching its habitat represent a de facto buffer against intensive commercial collecting at present.
