Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus commersoni was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1836 in the atlas of d'Orbigny's Voyage dans l'Amérique méridionale (Plate 7, fig. 2), from type specimens collected at Río de la Plata, Montevideo, Uruguay by Alcide d'Orbigny during his 1826–1833 South American expedition. The holotype is a dry specimen (MNHN A-9444) at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris; a lectotype was designated by Weber (1986). The full text description appeared later, in Valenciennes (1847).
The name is unusual in the Catalog of Fishes notation: because it was described directly in the genus Hypostomus (not in an antecedent genus subsequently synonymised), the authority is given without parentheses — Hypostomus commersoni Valenciennes 1836 — distinguishing it from the parenthesised combinations typical of species first described in Plecostomus or Hypostomus sensu lato and later rearranged. The CoF (spid=5112) confirms this status, placing it in Loricariidae: Hypostominae, with distribution across the lower Paraná, Iguazú, Paraguay, Plata, and Dulce rivers.
The species epithet honours Philibert Commerson (1727–1773), the French physician and naturalist who sailed with Bougainville on his circumnavigation (1766–1769) and made extensive natural history collections in the Río de la Plata region — among the earliest scientific surveys of that drainage. The assignment is thus historically appropriate even though Commerson predated the formal description by six decades.
The species has been the subject of important revisionary work: Cardoso et al. (2019) applied molecular and morphological data to H. commersoni and related species in the lower La Plata basin, clarifying the cryptic diversity in this complex and confirming H. commersoni as a valid, well-differentiated taxon distinct from H. laplatae, H. spiniger, and H. affinis.
Morphology
Hypostomus commersoni is a large, robust pleco. FishBase records a maximum of 24 in TL and 1.8 kg body mass — figures from the largest wild specimens in Argentina and Uruguay, where the fish reaches sizes rarely seen in the aquarium. Typical large adults from aquarium collections reach 15.5–19.5 in. The body is heavily armoured, with bony scutes arranged in the standard loricariid rows; the cross-section is angular rather than rounded, giving a flat-flanked, keeled appearance.
Key identifying characters as codified by Cardoso et al. (2019) and summarised in FishBase include: bifid (not spoon-shaped) teeth; dark spots on a light background (not the light-on-dark pattern of some congeners); four conspicuous rough longitudinal ridges on the flanks bearing posteriorly inclined odontodes; 26–29 plates in the lateral series; one to two plates bordering the posterior margin of the supraoccipital bone; and a distinctive temporal plate ridge. Dorsal fin formula is II,7 (two spines, seven soft rays); anal fin is I,4.
Colouration in life is pale to medium tan or olive-grey with a dense pattern of small dark spots or vermiculations — the 'cascudo' pattern common to southern La Plata Hypostomus. Ventral surface is pale, unspotted or lightly mottled. Large old adults can appear more uniformly grey-brown as the spotting pattern contracts.
Sexual dimorphism is similar to other large Hypostomus: males typically develop more pronounced odontodes on the pectoral-fin spine and broader, flatter heads at maturity, but reliable sex determination in the field requires examination of the genital papilla.
Habitat
Hypostomus commersoni occupies the lower Paraná River system and associated drainages across a broad subtropical–temperate range encompassing southern Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina (Buenos Aires, Entre Ríos, Corrientes, Santa Fe, Misiones). The distribution includes the lower Paraná mainstream, the Iguazú, the Paraguay, the Río de la Plata estuary, and the Dulce River in Argentina.
Field data from Cardoso et al. (2019) collected within this range describe the species from substrates of muddy sand in moderately oxygenated waters (dissolved oxygen 6.1–9.1 mg/L), with water turbidity ranging from near-clear to 442 NTU in the most turbid samples, pH from 7.2 to 9.2, conductivity 1.087–2.654 µS/cm, and temperature 62–82 °F — again reflecting a genuinely subtropical fish that tolerates cool winters. Current in occupied microhabitats is moderate; the species is potamodromous, seasonally migrating through the river system.
The Río de la Plata is one of the world's widest estuaries, and H. commersoni reaches the tidal freshwater sections of this system. Rocky revetments along river banks, submerged logs, and muddy sand shoals associated with woody debris characterise occupied microhabitats in the lower system.
Feeding
Hypostomus commersoni is a generalist benthic grazer, consuming aufwuchs (algae, diatoms, and biofilm) scraped from hard surfaces with its bifid teeth and broad oral disc. In turbid, sediment-laden rivers like the lower Paraná and Río de la Plata, the fish also ingests fine organic sediment containing bacteria, fungal hyphae, and detritus — a dietary component confirmed by gut-content studies of related southern Hypostomus species.
As in all Hypostomus, facultative air-breathing via the stomach is documented for the genus, enabling survival in hypoxic conditions during low-water periods or in seasonally flood-affected areas where dissolved oxygen drops. This metabolic flexibility contributes to the species' broad distributional range across river types that include both clear, oxygen-rich highland tributaries and the turbid, seasonally variable lower Paraná.
In captivity H. commersoni accepts a wide variety of foods appropriate for its grazing ecology: algae wafers, vegetable matter (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato, green peas), and high-quality sinking pellets. Its large size means it consumes substantial quantities, and its production of waste is proportional — a critical consideration for tank management.
Mating
Reproductive seasonality in H. commersoni aligns with the austral spring–summer period (approximately October–February), when the lower Paraná system warms from winter lows of around 61–64 °F toward summer peaks of 77–82 °F. The seasonal temperature increase, coinciding with rising water levels from Andean snowmelt and upstream rainfall, appears to be the principal environmental trigger for reproductive activity.
Males select and defend burrow sites in riverbanks, among rock structures, or under submerged wood, becoming visibly territorial. Courtship involves sustained territorial patrol and fin displays. The species' large size means that in home aquaria, anything resembling courtship is exceptionally rare; the spatial requirements for a pair are beyond most hobbyist tank setups. Potamodromous migration upstream during spring is well documented for the species in river-survey literature, suggesting that specific habitat characteristics — including substrate type, flow regime, and proximity to suitable spawning cavities — are important in mate and site selection.
Breeding
Hypostomus commersoni is a cavity-spawner with paternal brood care, following the general Hypostomus reproductive pattern. In the wild it excavates or occupies burrows in earthen riverbanks, or uses rocky crevices and large hollow logs, depositing adhesive eggs in clutches guarded by the male. Fecundity is high for the genus: gut-content and fecundity studies of large southern Hypostomus report clutches of several hundred to over a thousand eggs in fully ripe females, correlated with the fish's large body size.
Captive breeding of H. commersoni is not documented in the hobbyist literature in any detail, and given the species' size requirements (a pair would need a tank of 160 US gal or more, ideally with a temperature-cycling system to simulate seasonal change), successful reproduction in a home aquarium is essentially unreported. Research aquaculture in Argentina and Brazil has explored Hypostomus breeding for fishery restocking, but specific protocols for this species are not in publicly available, citable sources.
Fisheries in the lower Paraná system rely on natural recruitment, and there is no established commercial aquaculture of H. commersoni. The species is occasionally caught as bycatch in net fisheries targeting other La Plata species.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus commersoni is not a fish for the typical community aquarium — it is a river giant, and it should be treated as one. An adult approaching 19.5–23.5 in in a standard tank will be perpetually cramped, perpetually stressed, and perpetually generating more waste than most filtration systems can easily handle. The species is sometimes sold as juveniles — attractive, spotted fish 2–4 in long — with no indication of the adult size; buyers should be clearly aware that this is a potential 23.5 in, 1.8 kg fish.
For hobbyists equipped to house the species appropriately — a tank of 210 US gal or more, powerful external filtration, and a temperature-cycling system that allows genuine cooling to 61–64 °F in winter — H. commersoni is a rewarding and historically significant species. Water parameters should reflect the lower La Plata: temperature 64–79 °F (cooler in winter, with summer warmth driving feeding activity), pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard water (the lower Paraná system is moderately mineralised). Weekly large partial water changes are non-negotiable given the waste load.
Compatible tankmates at appropriate scale include large cichlids of the La Plata system (Cichlasoma, Crenicichla), large characins, and other large loricariids that are not direct competitors for bottom territory. The fish is not aggressive toward unrelated species but will defend benthic territory from conspecifics or morphologically similar plecos. Driftwood and large rocky structures providing shelter are beneficial, though the fish will not extensively rasp wood in the manner of Panaque.
Conservation
Hypostomus commersoni is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, assessed 30 October 2020. This status reflects the species' wide distribution across the lower La Plata basin and the absence of evidence for major population-level decline despite substantial pressures on its native rivers.
The lower Paraná and its connected drainages are among the most modified river systems in South America. The Itaipú dam (completed 1984) on the Paraná–Paraguay border drowned a substantial stretch of the upper Paraná, permanently altering flow and sediment regimes. The Yacyretá dam and numerous smaller hydroelectric projects further modify the river. Widespread floodplain conversion to agriculture across Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay has reduced riparian and wetland habitat. Urban and industrial effluents enter the river system along its heavily populated lower reaches.
H. commersoni is a food fish in parts of its range — particularly in artisanal fisheries in Uruguay and Argentina where it is known as 'cascudo' — and is taken as bycatch in net fisheries. The combination of habitat modification and fishing pressure may affect local populations, though the species' wide range and relatively high fecundity support its current Least Concern status. Freshwater ichthyological surveys in the region continue to track loricariid community structure.
