Taxonomy & naming
Leporacanthicus galaxias was formally described by Isbrücker and Nijssen in 1989 in Die Aquarien- und Terrarienzeitschrift (DATZ), volume 42, number 9, pp. 546, based on type material from Lago em frente a Jacobal, Rio Tocantins, Pará State, Brazil. The species circulates in the hobby under both L029 (the original DATZ-assigned code, referring to type-locality Tocantins fish) and L007 (a separately registered code applied to a phenotypically similar but not identical fish, sometimes labelled Leporacanthicus cf. galaxias, likely representing populations from a different drainage).
The relationship between L029 and L007 has been debated among hobbyists and systematists. PlanetCatfish maintains L029 as Leporacanthicus galaxias (Isbrücker & Nijssen, 1989) and treats L007 separately as Leporacanthicus cf. galaxias — the latter differing in having a proportionally taller dorsal fin, a shorter snout, and larger body spots. Hobbyists should be aware that fish sold as 'vampire pleco' or 'galaxy pleco' may be either form, and verifying provenance before purchase is advisable.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Leporacanthicus galaxias Isbrücker & Nijssen, 1989. No synonyms are recorded. The genus Leporacanthicus ('rabbit thorn') is diagnosed within the tribe Ancistrini (subfamily Hypostominae) by the characteristic unicuspid, elongated anterior teeth — the 'fangs' — and by the small, backwards-facing nuchal spine on the top of the head that all species in the genus share (Armbruster, 2004).
Morphology
Adults of Leporacanthicus galaxias reach approximately 8.5 in standard length (SL), making it a mid-sized pleco that is substantially smaller than cactus plecos (Pseudacanthicus) but larger than dwarf wood-eating species. The body is moderately depressed in cross-section, with the typical loricariid bony scute armour.
Colouration is the species' most arresting feature: the ground colour is very dark brown to near-black, overlaid with a pattern of small, round white to pale yellow spots scattered across the entire body and fins — resembling a night sky, hence galaxias. Juveniles tend to show crisper, more contrasting spots; large adults often darken overall, and the spot contrast can diminish. A 'night-fright' pattern (pale, washed-out coloration) is sometimes seen in newly imported or stressed fish and does not indicate permanent colouration.
The genus' diagnostic teeth are pronounced in L. galaxias: the anterior teeth in the lower jaw are enlarged, unicuspid and projecting, giving the fish an underbite that resembles tusks or fangs ('vampire pleco', 'tusken pleco'). These are not wood-rasping teeth but tools for prying prey from substrate surfaces or seizing mobile invertebrates.
All Leporacanthicus species share a small, blunt, backward-facing thorn-like plate on the top of the head (the nuchal plate), which distinguishes the genus from superficially similar spotted Ancistrus or Hypancistrus species. Males develop elongated interopercular odontodes; females are wider-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
The type locality of Leporacanthicus galaxias is a lagoon (lago) directly in front of Jacobal, on the Rio Tocantins in Pará State, Brazil. The Tocantins is a major river draining the Brazilian Highlands; its middle and lower sections feature extensive rocky substrates, rapids and high dissolved-oxygen environments in which rocky-habitat loricariids reach their greatest diversity.
Further records expand the species' known distribution across multiple Amazonian drainages: PlanetCatfish lists occurrences in the lower Amazon, Tocantins, Madeira, Guamá, and Nhamundá rivers, as well as one record from the upper Orinoco (Ventuari). The breadth of these records — spanning separate major drainages — raises the question of whether all records represent a single species or a complex; the L007 distinction noted above likely reflects at least some of this intraspecific or interspecific diversity.
Microhabitat is rocky: the fish lives in and among boulders, rocky crevices and submerged rock faces in areas of fast flow and high oxygenation. It does not associate strongly with wood. Water chemistry at the type locality and nearby collecting sites is soft to very soft (conducive to the largely rain-fed, nutrient-poor waters typical of the Brazilian Shield), acidic to neutral (pH 5.6–7.0), and warm (72–79 °F). The emphasis on strong current and oxygenation is a consistent field observation.
Feeding
Leporacanthicus galaxias is a specialist carnivore within the loricariid family — its elongated, unicuspid 'fang' teeth are anatomically optimised for seizing and manipulating prey, not for scraping biofilm or rasping wood. In the wild the diet consists primarily of molluscs (snails and small bivalves), crustaceans, insect larvae, and other invertebrates found on rocky substrates and among rock crevices.
In the aquarium the species will readily accept a variety of meaty foods: live or frozen bloodworms, frozen mussels, cockles, prawns/shrimp, earthworms, and similar invertebrate offerings. It will also take carnivore-formula sinking pellets and wafers. Unlike most plecos sold in aquarium shops, L. galaxias has minimal interest in algae wafers, zucchini or other vegetable foods; these can be offered in small amounts but should not form the dietary core. A diet predominantly of algae wafers will leave the fish underfed and in poor condition over the long term.
The species is an active and assertive feeder. It will compete effectively for food and should not be housed with timid tankmates that might be outcompeted at feeding time.
Mating
Males of Leporacanthicus galaxias are strongly territorial, particularly around rock cave sites that serve as both refuge and eventual spawning location. The PlanetCatfish CotM October 2002 article describes the species as requiring oxygen-rich strong current — a key environmental cue for conditioning and triggering reproductive behaviour, as the fish originates in well-oxygenated rapids.
Male territorial behaviour includes lateral displays, fin-spreading and the use of the prominent interopercular odontodes in threatening postures. In a well-maintained aquarium with multiple rock caves, males will establish and defend separate territories and tolerate the presence of females without constant aggression.
Conditioning on a rich diet of meaty foods appears important for triggering spawning attempts. No detailed species-specific published account of courtship is available; the general mode inferred from aquarium observations and from congeners (L. heterodon, L. triactis) involves the male attracting a conditioned female to the defended cave site.
Breeding
Leporacanthicus galaxias has been bred in captivity, with 4 breeding reports registered on PlanetCatfish as of mid-2026. Breeding requires a well-established, oxygenated aquarium with rocky cave structures and strong water movement.
The species is a cave spawner. The male defends a rocky crevice or suitable cave and guards the eggs after spawning. Eggs are adhesive and deposited on the cave walls. The male fans the eggs continuously throughout incubation, which at 75–79 °F typically lasts approximately 5–7 days. Fry are relatively large at hatch and have an obvious yolk sac that sustains them for several days before active feeding begins.
Fry should be offered meaty foods promptly once free-swimming: newly hatched brine shrimp, micro-pellets with high protein content, and finely chopped bloodworm. The fry are sensitive to poor water quality; small but frequent partial water changes in the rearing tank are advisable. Adults of this species have a lifespan potentially exceeding 15 years in well-maintained captivity.
Setup for breeding should replicate the natural fast-flowing, well-oxygenated habitat: powerhead-driven circulation, cave structures of appropriate size, and temperature maintained at 75–79 °F. A slight temperature drop followed by a raise can simulate seasonal cues that trigger spawning in Amazonian fishes.
In the aquarium
Leporacanthicus galaxias is a rewarding but specialised aquarium fish. Its modest adult size of ~8.5 in SL and striking appearance make it more accessible than the giant cactus plecos, but its dietary requirements, current needs and inter-male aggression mean it is not a suitable choice for the general community tank.
A single adult requires at least 40–50 US gal with strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen; 200+ litres is more appropriate for long-term maintenance. Rocky cave structures must be provided — overturned clay pots or flat slate caves positioned among gravel and rock rubble approximate the natural microhabitat. Driftwood is acceptable but not essential.
The species should not be housed with other Leporacanthicus, other Pseudacanthicus or similarly sized territorial plecos in a small tank, as inter-male aggression will be chronic. In a large tank with clearly separate territories and multiple caves, some coexistence is possible. Fish that share the midwater zone (medium-sized cichlids such as Geophagus or Acarichthys, large tetras) can work as tankmates if the pleco is not food-stressed.
Water chemistry should reflect the Tocantins origin: temperature 72–79 °F (notably cooler than many Amazonian species), pH 5.6–7.0, and soft water. This is an important distinction from the flash pleco (P. albivermis) or common plecos sold alongside it: L. galaxias prefers cooler, softer, more acidic water than many of its retail companions, and keeping it at 82–86 °F long-term will shorten its lifespan.
Feeding must reflect the carnivore diet: meaty foods should form the core of the diet. Misidentification of this species as a standard algae-eating pleco and feeding it primarily on algae wafers is a common cause of failure. New arrivals may take time to accept prepared foods; live or frozen bloodworm is usually the best initial offering.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Leporacanthicus galaxias as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting a broad recorded distribution across multiple Amazonian and Orinocan drainages. The species is regularly encountered in the ornamental fish trade and appears to sustain collection pressure without documented population decline.
The caveat to this assessment is the taxonomic uncertainty around the L007/L029 complex: if what is currently treated as Leporacanthicus galaxias encompasses multiple species with restricted individual ranges, the true conservation status of each component taxon may be more constrained than the aggregate assessment suggests. A thorough systematic revision of the genus would clarify this.
The Tucuruí Dam on the Rio Tocantins, which flooded enormous areas of rocky rapid habitat when completed in 1984, is the most significant historical impact on the type-locality population. Ongoing pressures in the broader distribution range include mining activity, sedimentation, and potential additional hydroelectric development on the Tocantins tributaries.
