Taxonomy & naming
Otocinclus mariae was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1940 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, volume 92, page 83, figures 41–43, as part of the zoological results of the Second Bolivian Expedition for the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 1936–1937. The holotype is unique: ANSP 69068, deposited at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. The type locality is Boca Chapare, Río Chimore, a tributary to the Río Ichilo, at approximately 15°58'S, 64°42'W, within the Río Mamoré system, Bolivia.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name as Otocinclus mariae Fowler 1940, with no listed synonyms. The species has been consistently treated as valid through subsequent catalogues (Isbrücker 1980, Burgess 1989, Schaefer 1997, Ferraris 2007, and later references).
The genus Otocinclus Cope, 1871 — deriving from Greek ous/oto (ear) and Latin cinclus (latticework), alluding to the lattice-like pores of the cephalic sensory system — is placed in subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, a distinct lineage from the large-pleco Hypostominae. Hypoptopomatinae are diagnosed by an exposed ventral surface of the pectoral girdle bearing odontodes near the centre of the coracoid strut, absent in Hypostominae (Armbruster 2004). Otocinclus contains approximately 19–20 valid species; O. mariae is one of the broader-ranging Amazonian forms.
FishBase notes the eponymy: Mrs Maria Howes was the wife of Arthur Howes, who sponsored the 1936–1937 Bolivian expedition during which the type material was collected.
Morphology
Otocinclus mariae is a small loricariid with a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in (FishBase, Ref. 36885) — making it among the smallest of the genus and one of the tiniest plecos available to hobbyists. The body is slender, lightly built, and somewhat less dorso-ventrally compressed than in larger loricariids, consistent with the lifestyle of a small fish navigating submerged vegetation and leaf surfaces.
Colouration is typical of the genus: the dorsal and lateral surfaces are brownish to olive-grey with a dark mid-lateral stripe running from the snout through the eye and along the flank to a spot or smudge at the base of the caudal fin. The ventral surface is pale cream to white. The precise configuration of the caudal spot and the extent and continuity of the mid-lateral stripe vary slightly among Otocinclus species and are primary characters used in formal diagnoses; reliably separating species in the field or at a retail level requires reference to type descriptions.
The mouth is ventral and adapted for suction-grazing: the lips form a functional disc over smooth surfaces, and the fine multi-cusped teeth are suited for scraping soft diatom films, green algae, and microalgal biofilm from plant leaves, glass, and other surfaces. Unlike the large wood-eating plecos, Otocinclus teeth are not adapted for rasping coarse material.
Sexual dimorphism is modest but consistent: females are larger and broader, most obviously visible from above when the fish are viewed through the aquarium glass, especially when gravid.
Habitat
The Catalog of Fishes records the distribution of Otocinclus mariae as the upper Madeira and lower Amazon River basins. PlanetCatfish lists distribution records in the Amazon (lower Amazon and Middle Amazon/Solimões), the Madeira (upper Madeira), and the La Plata system (Paraná and Paraguay). GBIF occurrence data confirm records from Bolivia and from lower-Amazon Brazil; iNaturalist records add Suriname, though specimens from outside the core Madeira/upper Amazon range may represent misidentifications in mixed shipments.
The type locality at Boca Chapare, Río Chimore, Bolivia (Mamoré drainage) — a warm lowland tropical river at around 656 ft elevation, ca. 16°S — establishes this as a lowland Amazonian species. PlanetCatfish gives temperature 70–79 °F and pH 5.5–7.5, consistent with the warm, soft-to-moderately-hard lowland tropical freshwater conditions of the upper Madeira system.
Microhabitat in the wild, as for most Otocinclus, is associated with submerged macrophytes, submerged aquatic plants, and marginal vegetation — surfaces on which soft diatom and green algal biofilm accumulates. The fish congregate in groups on plant leaves and stems, grazing continuously. Unlike the large rheophilic plecos that occupy boulder-rapids, Otocinclus favour slower to moderately flowing, vegetated areas with abundant grazeable surface area.
Feeding
Otocinclus mariae is a microalgae grazer and biofilm feeder. In the wild, the diet centres on diatoms, green algae, and the bacterial and fungal microfilm communities that colonise plant leaves, submerged stems, and other smooth surfaces in the slow to moderate currents of the species' habitat. This is a grazing specialisation — the fish's teeth and mouth are not designed for harder algae or wood, and the fish is not a general scavenger in the manner of larger catfish.
In the aquarium, the species presents one of the more frequently encountered husbandry challenges of any otocinclus: it is easy to underfeed. Natural green algae on glass and plant leaves is the primary food source; tanks with insufficient algal growth will fail to sustain Otocinclus, no matter what prepared foods are offered. Supplementary foods must be soft and vegetable-based: thin slices of cucumber or zucchini pinned to the glass or left to sink, blanched spinach, or specialist soft algae wafers placed near the fish's resting sites. The fish tends to ignore hard, tablet-type wafers until thoroughly softened.
High-quality, phytoplankton-rich water in a mature planted tank — where a light film of green algae on the glass indicates adequate biological fertility — provides the best baseline nutrition. Overfeeding with protein foods or abrupt diet changes should be avoided; the digestive system is adapted to a near-continuous intake of small quantities of algal material.
Mating
Otocinclus mariae has not been formally bred in a documented hobbyist report on PlanetCatfish. Courtship and spawning behaviour in the genus are best documented for O. affinis and O. vestitus, and the general pattern is likely similar across species.
Males pursue females persistently during breeding condition, often driving females to exhaustion in smaller tanks. In groups with a male:female ratio skewed toward females (recommended at roughly 2:1 females to males or more), the pressure on individual females is reduced. Males are conspicuously slimmer-bodied than the broader, egg-laden females before spawning.
Conditioning for breeding involves excellent water quality, a mature planted tank or a tank with abundant algal growth, regular partial water changes (25–30% twice weekly during conditioning), and a slight reduction in temperature followed by a simulated 'rain trigger' — adding cooler water during water changes to simulate seasonal flooding. This approach has successfully induced spawning in other Otocinclus species and should be relevant to O. mariae.
Breeding
No captive breeding report for Otocinclus mariae specifically is recorded on PlanetCatfish as of this writing. The generic Otocinclus breeding account — drawn principally from O. affinis, O. vestitus, and several undetermined species bred in planted tanks — describes a scatter-spawner strategy: eggs are deposited singly or in small groups on plant leaves, glass, or other smooth surfaces, with no parental care following egg deposition. The eggs are small, transparent to pale amber, and adhesive.
Incubation for otocinclus eggs at typical temperatures (72–77 °F) lasts approximately 2–3 days; the larvae are tiny and initially consume the yolk sac for 2–3 days before beginning to graze biofilm. Very fine, soft food — infusoria, liquid fry food, or surfaces pre-colonised with green algae — is required for early fry. Fry survival in community tanks is very low; a dedicated breeding setup provides significantly better results.
The absence of breeding records for O. mariae specifically may partly reflect that hobbyists rarely know which Otocinclus species they actually have. Fish sold as 'otocinclus' in mixed shipments from Bolivia could be O. mariae, and inadvertent spawning may go unrecognised. Keepers wishing to attempt breeding should establish known O. mariae stock, provide a well-planted tank with fine-leaved plants (Hornwort, Java moss), and follow the conditioning and temperature-cycling protocol used for other otocinclus species.
In the aquarium
Otocinclus mariae shares the husbandry profile of other dwarf otocinclus: it is peaceful, gregarious, and highly effective at grazing soft algae from glass and plant surfaces in a planted aquarium. Its maximum size of 1.5 in makes it suitable for tanks as small as 10–15 US gal, and a group of six or more is preferable to a single specimen, as the species is naturally schooling and lone individuals are prone to stress.
The foremost husbandry challenge is nutrition. Newly imported otocinclus arrive from mass-collection shipments and are frequently emaciated; they need a tank with established algal growth before introduction, not a spotlessly clean new aquarium. Many losses occur in the first weeks post-import due to starvation in algae-free tanks. Providing supplemental soft foods (blanched cucumber, spirulina-based wafers softened in tank water) from the first day helps bridge nutritional gaps.
Water quality must be high: otocinclus are sensitive to ammonia, nitrite, and elevated nitrate. A cycled filter, zero ammonia and nitrite, and nitrate below 20 mg/L are minimum requirements. Regular partial water changes of 20–25% weekly are essential. Temperature 70–79 °F and pH 5.5–7.5 covers the recorded wild range; the species is not especially demanding within this band.
Compatibility is excellent: O. mariae is peaceful with virtually all non-predatory fish and invertebrates. It should not be kept with aggressive fin-nippers or large predatory catfish. Common tankmates in planted aquaria — nano fish (rasboras, small tetras, ember tetras), shrimp, and Corydoras — are all suitable. Avoid pairing with larger, boisterous plecos that will compete for algal grazing surfaces.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Otocinclus mariae as Least Concern (LC) in October 2020, reflecting a broad distribution across the upper Madeira and lower Amazon basins with no evidence of significant population decline. The species is recorded from Bolivia and Brazil, and possibly from other Amazon-tributary countries based on occurrence data.
Otocinclus in general are commercially important in the ornamental fish trade: large numbers of mixed-species Otocinclus are exported from Brazil and Peru annually, with the Bolivian species (including O. mariae) forming part of that trade. The volumes exported are substantial, but the Least Concern assessment reflects a belief that wild populations remain stable. The IUCN notes that the genus as a whole faces localised pressures from habitat loss where tropical lowland forests are cleared for agriculture and cattle ranching, degrading water quality in streams that support the species.
The upper Madeira drainage — the Mamoré–Chapare system that forms the core of O. mariae's known range — is under increasing pressure from hydroelectric development (including the Santo Antônio and Jirau dams on the Madeira main stem, completed in the 2010s) and from Bolivian agricultural expansion. The biological impacts of these developments on small, plant-associated loricariids like O. mariae are not well quantified, and more targeted surveys and population data would be valuable for future assessments.
