Taxonomy & naming
Otocinclus xakriaba was formally described by Stewart A. Schaefer in 1997 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 148, pages 75–96), from specimens collected at the Río Pau de Colher — a small tributary on the road between Guanambi and the town of Mutas in the Rio São Francisco basin, Bahia state, Brazil (14°12'48"S, 42°49'29"W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Otocinclus xakriaba Schaefer, 1997, with no junior synonyms currently listed.
The genus Otocinclus Cope, 1871 belongs to the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae within Loricariidae, a grouping of predominantly small-bodied, stream-dwelling armoured catfishes. The subfamilial placement is confirmed by both FishBase and PlanetCatfish's Cat-eLog, and is consistent with Armbruster's (2004) phylogenetic treatment of the family, in which Hypoptopomatinae is characterised by a distinctive arrangement of abdominal scutes and reduced or absent cheek bristles compared to the suckermouth plecos of Hypostominae.
The species epithet honours the Xakriabá (also spelled Xacriabá), an indigenous people who historically inhabited the upper São Francisco drainage of Minas Gerais and Bahia states, Brazil. This eponymous naming follows a tradition in Neotropical ichthyology of commemorating indigenous peoples associated with a fish's native river basin; the Eponym Dictionary of Fishes (Van der Laan et al., as cited in FishBase) notes the connection specifically.
Morphology
Adults of O. xakriaba reach a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in (Schaefer, 2003, in Reis, Kullander & Ferraris, Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America), placing it firmly among the smallest members of an already small genus. As in all Otocinclus species, the body is entirely encased in longitudinal rows of bony scutes, giving the fish a rigid, armour-plated appearance. The belly is flattened and the mouth is ventral and disc-shaped, adapted for grazing on periphyton and aufwuchs from hard surfaces.
Like other otocinclins, O. xakriaba lacks functional teeth for biting hard substrates; instead the narrow, bicuspid teeth are arranged in a brush-like row suited to scraping soft algal films. The genus is diagnosed in part by the configuration of lateral scute rows and the shape of the abdominal plate arrangement. The colour pattern typical of O. xakriaba — as illustrated in Schaefer's (1997) original description from the holotype drawing by Tracy D. Pedersen — consists of a brownish dorsal field with a prominent, dark lateral stripe running from the snout region to the caudal fin, contrasting with a paler ventral surface.
Sexual dimorphism follows the otocinclid pattern: females are noticeably broader-bodied than males, especially when viewed from above, and this is visible at or near breeding condition. No secondary characters such as odontodes or fin elaborations are present.
Habitat
Otocinclus xakriaba is endemic to the São Francisco River basin of northeastern Brazil, with the type locality at Río Pau de Colher, a right-bank tributary in Bahia state. The São Francisco is one of Brazil's great internal drainage systems, flowing roughly 2,435 mi from the highlands of Minas Gerais northward before turning east toward the Atlantic. The middle and upper reaches where O. xakriaba occurs are characterised by clear-to-turbid waters of varying chemistry depending on season and geological substrate, with temperatures typically in the tropical range of 72–82 °F.
Microhabitat for otocinclids in general, and for São Francisco endemics in particular, centres on hard surfaces — rocks, submerged wood, and the smooth leaf surfaces of aquatic macrophytes — where biofilm and epilithic algae accumulate. Otocinclus species are predominantly shallow-water, current-influenced fish; they are typically found in areas of moderate to swift flow where algal growth is supported by light and where sedimentation does not smother the rock surface. The São Francisco basin is subject to pronounced seasonal flood pulses, and populations likely shift between microhabitats seasonally.
The genus as a whole is facultatively air-breathing (as noted by Armbruster & Page, cited in FishBase), a trait that may confer tolerance for low-oxygen conditions during the dry season when shallow pools become hypoxic.
Feeding
Like all members of Otocinclus, O. xakriaba is a periphyton grazer — an epilithic algae specialist whose diet in the wild consists principally of the biofilm communities (diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, associated micro-invertebrates and detritus) that coat hard surfaces in sunlit, well-oxygenated stream reaches. The suckermouth disc is pressed against the substrate and the brush-like teeth scrape the surface, consuming a thin layer of organic material with each pass.
In the aquarium, the same diet applies: access to an established tank with a good growth of microalgae on glass, rocks, and broad-leaved plants is the cornerstone of husbandry. Supplementary feeding with blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), spinach, cucumber — and sinking algae wafers or spirulina-based foods is beneficial, especially in tanks where natural algae production is insufficient. Small quantities of micro-invertebrate food (e.g., microworms, baby brine shrimp) may also be accepted, though the species is essentially herbivorous-to-omnivorous and protein-rich foods should not dominate the diet.
Owing to the small adult size, O. xakriaba can become outcompeted for food in tanks containing larger, more aggressive grazers. The species does best where it is the primary algae consumer or where food is placed to give it unimpeded access.
Mating
Courtship behaviour in O. xakriaba specifically has not been documented in the published literature. The genus Otocinclus has been studied more thoroughly in more common species such as O. affinis, O. vestitus, and O. vittatus, and the general pattern described for those species is believed to apply to other otocinclids including this one.
In typical Otocinclus courtship, a male will actively follow and pursue a ripe female through the tank, often pressing against her flanks or swimming in close formation above or alongside her. Females appear to control the pace and direction of courtship events. The broadening of the female's body when gravid is the primary external cue that spawning may be imminent. In breeding groups, a single female may be pursued by several males simultaneously.
No information is available on specific calling or signalling behaviours in O. xakriaba. The species has not been bred in captivity and registered on PlanetCatfish's breeding database as of the most recent catalogue update. Given the very small body size and restricted known range, maintaining robust, well-fed groups is likely the primary requirement for reproductive success.
Breeding
No confirmed captive breeding reports for Otocinclus xakriaba have been published or registered with PlanetCatfish. The breeding biology of the species in the wild is likewise undocumented in the available scientific literature. For comparative context, the better-studied otocinclids spawn adhesive eggs directly onto flat hard surfaces — typically the broad leaves of aquatic plants, glass panes, or smooth stones — in a rapid spawning burst where the male fertilises small clutches of eggs simultaneously as they are laid by the female.
Otocinclus eggs are transparent to pale, adhesive, and typically deposited singly or in small groups over a broad area rather than in a discrete nest. No parental care has been recorded in any Otocinclus species: after spawning, both parents typically resume normal activity with no guarding behaviour. Fry hatch within 48–72 hours at typical tropical temperatures and are immediately free-swimming, requiring access to fine algae film and infusoria-sized food.
Given the very small adult size of O. xakriaba (under 1 in SL), clutch sizes are likely correspondingly modest — probably fewer than 20 eggs per spawning event, though this is inferred from the species' body size and cannot be confirmed without observational data.
In the aquarium
Otocinclus xakriaba is not commonly available in the aquarium trade, and importation under this name is essentially absent from mainstream hobbyist suppliers as of the mid-2020s. The small number of individuals that have been collected are primarily of scientific interest, and the species does not appear on PlanetCatfish's registered-keepers database in meaningful numbers. Hobbyists seeking an otocinclid from the São Francisco basin are more likely to encounter the undifferentiated 'common oto' trade, which seldom distinguishes between the 15+ valid Otocinclus species.
In aquarium keeping terms, the requirements extrapolated from its wild habitat are consistent with those of better-known otocinclids: a mature, well-lit tank with significant algal coverage; clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate current; temperature in the 72–81 °F range; neutral to slightly acidic or alkaline water chemistry (the São Francisco is moderately hard in its upper reaches); and a group of at minimum six individuals, since otocinclids are social and decline if kept alone or in pairs.
The extremely small adult size — under 1 in SL — means a 40-litre tank is technically sufficient for a small group, though larger volumes support more stable water chemistry. Compatibility is excellent with other peaceful species. Given the lack of aquarium records and the species' endemic distribution in an ecologically sensitive drainage, any specimens encountered should be assumed wild-caught and treated accordingly.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Otocinclus xakriaba as Least Concern in 2018, noting that the species has a sufficient range within the São Francisco River basin and no evidence of major population decline at the time of assessment. The São Francisco basin is, however, one of the most heavily impacted major river systems in Brazil: it supplies water for large-scale irrigated agriculture, multiple hydroelectric reservoirs, and the transposition canals of the São Francisco River Integration Project (PISF), which transfer water to the arid northeast. All of these alter flow regimes, sedimentation dynamics, and water temperature in ways that could disadvantage rheophilic, hard-substrate-dependent species.
Endemism in the upper São Francisco is a conservation concern independent of any single species: the basin contains many species found nowhere else. For O. xakriaba specifically, the type locality on the Pau de Colher tributary is in a region of Bahia state subject to land-use pressures including small-scale agriculture and cattle ranching that increase turbidity and reduce riparian cover. No captive breeding population exists to buffer against wild population decline.
Monitoring of this species and other São Francisco otocinclid endemics is warranted given ongoing hydrological modification of the basin.
