Taxonomy & naming
Pareiorhina mystica was formally described in 2026 by Paulo L. C. Uzeda, André M. Katz, Felipe P. Ottoni, Wilson J. E. M. Costa, Francisco Langeani and Valter M. Azevedo-Santos, within a paper authored by Uzeda, Sartori, Katz, Ottoni, Costa, Langeani & Azevedo-Santos describing four new Pareiorhina species from the upper Paraná basin (Journal of Fish Biology, volume 108, issue 6, pages 1906-1933). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Pareiorhina mystica as a valid species with no synonyms.
The genus Pareiorhina sits in subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, within the tribe Neoplecostomini — a group of small, heavily plated, rheophilic loricariids that some earlier classifications treated as its own subfamily, 'Neoplecostominae,' now placed as a tribe within Hypoptopomatinae. Molecular analysis in the description paper found Pareiorhina to be polyphyletic, and placed P. mystica in a clade with a postdorsal ridge and unicuspid teeth alongside P. carrancas, P. aiuruoca and P. hyptiorhachis, rather than with the type species P. rudolphi. P. mystica had previously been recorded in regional faunal surveys under the name P. carrancas before this study demonstrated it was a distinct lineage; among the sGMYC and mGMYC molecular species-delimitation methods used, two lineages were recovered within the P. mystica sample, a signal the authors flag as worth further investigation even as they treat the population as one species pending further sampling.
The genus name Pareiorhina combines Greek pareia (cheek or jaw) and rhinos (nose). The specific epithet mystica is an adjective referencing the traditions of mysticism and esotericism embedded in the identity of São Thomé das Letras, the Minas Gerais town in whose surrounding streams the species occurs.
Morphology
The holotype is a 1.69 in standard length (SL) male; among the 21 measured specimens of the type series, standard length ranges from 1.22–1.69 in (mean 37.4 ± 0.12 in). No autapomorphic (unique-to-species) character was found to single out P. mystica; instead it is diagnosed by a combination of traits. Like P. aiuruoca, P. carrancas, P. hyptiorhachis, P. isabelae and P. sofiae, it carries a postdorsal ridge and unicuspid teeth (33-55 premaxillary and 28-56 dentary teeth), unlike the type species P. rudolphi.
It differs from P. carrancas by lacking keels on the dorsal and mid-dorsal plate series, by having two fenestrae (rather than one) on the front of the pelvic girdle, and by 30 total vertebrae (P. carrancas has 31); from P. hyptiorhachis by an elliptical rather than rounded snout profile, a naked snout tip, a narrower head, and 30 total vertebrae (P. hyptiorhachis has 29). Among the other three new species it is distinguished from P. aiuruoca by lacking the cluster of abdominal platelets and dark body spotting that mark that species, and by a fringed rather than smooth lower-lip margin; from P. isabelae by an elliptical rather than rounded snout profile and two pelvic-girdle fenestrae rather than one; and from P. sofiae by a narrower mandibular ramus, two pelvic-girdle fenestrae, and 30 vertebrae (P. sofiae has 29). Abdominal plating is notably variable within P. mystica — some specimens, including the holotype, carry platelets from the cleithrum to the pre-anal area, while others show only a single platelet or none at all — and the describing authors chose not to treat this variation as diagnostic.
In life the dorsal surface is light to dark brown and overall dusky, with pale saddles at the dorsal-fin origin, dorsal-fin end, mid-caudal-peduncle and caudal-peduncle end that are inconspicuous or absent in some individuals. Dark spots are scattered irregularly over the fin rays, occasionally forming four or five diffuse bands, against translucent brown interradial membranes. The venter is light beige from mouth to the end of the caudal peduncle, with melanophores concentrated near plated areas; preserved specimens fade to duller, less contrasting tones.
Habitat
The type locality, Ribeirão do Lavarejo, an affluent of the Capivari River drainage in the municipality of São Thomé das Letras, Minas Gerais, sits at 21°37'53"S, 44°53'27"W, 1,230 ft above sea level. Pareiorhina mystica inhabits second- to third-order streams throughout the Ingaí River microbasin, a small drainage crossing the Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra das Perdizes at the ecotone between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes, where grasslands dominate the higher elevations and forested riparian corridors line the lower stretches.
The Ingaí River drains a quartzite formation locally known as São Tomé Stone, a rock widely quarried for construction and landscaping in Brazil; as a result its streams run crystal-clear over stone and sand substrates, with tall waterfalls that draw ecotourists to the area. Although some localities carry a long history of quarrying impact, P. mystica remains relatively abundant and widely distributed across the microbasin, with several populations persisting in pristine Cerrado and Atlantic rainforest habitat.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study exists for Pareiorhina mystica; the original description is a taxonomic account and reports no feeding observations. Like other small Neoplecostomini within Hypoptopomatinae, the ventral, disc-shaped mouth and rasping, bronze-tipped teeth are consistent with grazing aufwuchs — algae, diatoms and biofilm — from rock surfaces in fast-flowing water, but this is a genus-level inference rather than a species-specific finding.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Pareiorhina mystica. The original description records only that reproductively active females develop a marked widening of the body between the dorsal-fin and anal-fin origins, producing a bulging trunk in dorsal view — a state absent in males — alongside the conical urogenital papilla and pelvic-fin-spine flap that mark mature males. Beyond these external signs of reproductive condition, nothing about courtship or pair formation is known.
Breeding
No breeding has been recorded for Pareiorhina mystica, in the wild or in captivity — the species was described in 2026 and has no aquarium history. Like other small rheophilic Hypoptopomatinae, it is presumed to be a cave- or crevice-spawner with some form of paternal guarding, but this is inferred from related genera rather than observed in P. mystica itself.
In the aquarium
Pareiorhina mystica is not in the aquarium trade; it was described from scientific collections only months before this account was written, and no L-number or hobbyist husbandry record exists. Its small size (under 1.7 in SL) and its habitat — clear, quartzite-bedded, stone-and-sand streams — suggest it would, in principle, suit a specialised, well-aerated biotope aquarium modelled on Atlantic Forest and Cerrado headwater streams, but this is extrapolation from the wild habitat data in the original description, not aquarium experience with the species.
Conservation
Pareiorhina mystica has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it was described in 2026. In the original description, the authors estimated its extent of occurrence at approximately 515 mi² across the Ingaí River microbasin and, applying IUCN criteria themselves, recommended a status of Least Concern, noting that despite a long history of quarrying impact at some sites, the species remains relatively abundant and easily captured across a broad area, with several populations in pristine habitat. This is the describing authors' own risk assessment, not an official Red List determination.
