Taxonomy & naming
Ricola macrops was originally described by Charles Tate Regan in 1904 as Loricaria (Loricaria) macrops, in Transactions of the Zoological Society of London (volume 17, part 3, page 290, Plate 17 fig. 3), based on material from the Río de la Plata, Argentina/Uruguay. The lectotype is housed at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1868.9.16.1).
In 1974, Isbrücker and Nijssen erected the monotypic genus Ricola to accommodate this species, formally removing it from Loricaria on morphological grounds — principally the combination of conspicuously fringed lower-lip barbels (otherwise characteristic of the Pseudohemiodon group) with numerous straight bicuspid teeth (around 15 per premaxilla, shared with Rineloricaria), a combination found in no other genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ricola macrops as the valid combination, with Loricaria macrops as the basionym synonym. The genus name Ricola has not been formally explained in published sources beyond its establishment; it appears to be a coined name without a stated derivation.
Within the subfamily Loricariinae, Covain & Fisch-Muller (2007) placed Ricola in the Loricaria group of tribe Loricariini, noting its morphologically intermediate character state between the Pseudohemiodon group and Rineloricaria. The phylogenetic analysis of Covain & Fisch-Muller (2007) recovered Ricola, Paraloricaria, Loricaria, and Brochiloricaria in a cluster within the Loricariini. The genus was revised by Isbrücker and Nijssen in 1978 in Beaufortia (vol. 27, no. 339), which established lectotype material and documented morphometrics.
Morphology
Ricola macrops reaches a maximum standard length of 8.5 in SL (Ferraris 2003; PlanetCatfish gives 8.5 in SL). It is a slender, dorsoventrally depressed catfish with a broad, flat head and a long, tapering caudal peduncle; the overall body plan is typical of Loricariinae whiptail catfishes.
The most diagnostic external feature, as signalled by the specific epithet, is the large eye: the maximum orbital diameter constitutes a notably large fraction of head length, consistent across multiple specimens measured by Isbrücker and Nijssen (1978). The eyes are positioned dorsolaterally on the flattened head. Body coloration in preserved specimens is brownish, often with irregular darker pigment; colour in life is not well documented in the accessible literature.
The most taxonomically important morphological combination is the unusual mix of lip characters: Ricola bears conspicuously fringed barbels on the lower lip, a feature shared with the Pseudohemiodon group, while also possessing numerous straight bicuspid teeth (approximately 15 per premaxilla) and numerous papillae on the inner lip surfaces, features more characteristic of Rineloricaria. This combination is unique in the subfamily and was the primary reason Isbrücker & Nijssen erected the separate genus. The abdominal cover consists of small platelets covering most of the ventral surface, a detail addressed in the 1978 Beaufortia revision. No published account documents sexual dimorphism, and sexual differences must be presumed unknown.
Habitat
Ricola macrops is known from the lower Paraná River basin, including the Río de la Plata estuary and its tributary rivers in Argentina and Uruguay (Covain & Fisch-Muller 2007; FishBase). The type locality is the Río de la Plata, one of the world's widest river estuaries, where the Paraná and Uruguay rivers converge before flowing into the Atlantic.
The lower Paraná system is characterised by a complex floodplain of braided channels, gallery forest, oxbow lagoons, and temporary wetlands. FishBase records water temperature in the range of 68–75 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, and water hardness of 5–15 dH for this species, consistent with the soft-to-moderately-hard, slightly acidic to neutral conditions typical of the lower Paraná floodplain. These are considerably cooler than tropical Amazonian conditions, reflecting the more southerly (subtropical to warm-temperate) latitude of the distribution.
Beyond these broad parameters, microhabitat preferences are not documented in published literature. Given the morphological grouping with Loricaria and related genera in the Loricariini, a benthic lifestyle over sandy or silty substrates in slow-moving or standing floodplain waters is probable. Covain & Fisch-Muller (2007) note that ecological and behavioural data for the genus are unavailable.
Feeding
No dietary data exist for Ricola macrops in the wild. Its morphological configuration — a ventral sucker-mouth, numerous fine bicuspid teeth, and papillose lips — is consistent with a diet centred on algal biofilm, periphyton, fine detritus, and associated microinvertebrates scraped from substrates.
The conspicuous fringed lower-lip barbels may serve a sensory role in detecting food in turbid or low-light conditions, as has been suggested for barbelled whiptail catfishes generally. A substrate-scraping feeding mode is the most plausible inference from tooth morphology; the numerous straight bicuspid teeth resemble those of Rineloricaria species that are documented biofilm and detritus scrapers.
In an aquarium context, comparable genera accept sinking algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables. Meaty foods such as frozen bloodworm and Artemia are likely accepted but probably form only a minor component of the natural diet. Given the cooler temperatures of the lower Paraná basin, metabolic rates — and thus food requirements — may be lower than in tropical relatives.
Mating
Courtship and mating behaviour in Ricola macrops are unknown. No field observations or captive breeding accounts have been published, and the species is not recorded as having been bred in the hobby (PlanetCatfish breeding reports: none). Covain & Fisch-Muller (2007) note that ecological and behavioural data are unavailable for the genus.
In terms of phylogenetic context, Ricola sits in the Loricaria group of Loricariini, clustered with genera including Loricaria (a documented abdomino-lip brooder) and Brochiloricaria (also an abdomino-lip brooder). This raises the possibility that Ricola macrops may share the abdomino-lip brooding strategy, in which the male carries or guards a compact egg mass beneath the lip region, but this must remain entirely speculative pending actual observation.
Breeders interested in attempting captive reproduction should replicate the cooler, soft-water conditions of the lower Paraná (68–75 °F), and provide fine sandy substrate and appropriate seasonal temperature fluctuations to mimic natural cues.
Breeding
The breeding biology of Ricola macrops is undocumented. No captive breeding reports exist in the published or hobby literature, and no wild reproductive data have been published. The Baensch Aquarium Atlas (Evers & Seidel 2005 edition) describes the species briefly but records sexual differences only as uncharacterised.
In the lower Paraná system, water temperature drops markedly in winter (austral June–August), when river water may reach 59 °F or lower in some years. An annual thermal cycle of this magnitude typically acts as a reproductive trigger in subtropical fish species — a cold winter followed by spring warming commonly stimulates gonadal development and spawning. Aquarists attempting to breed this species would be well advised to cycle the tank temperature seasonally: a winter cool-down to 64–68 °F for two to three months, followed by a gradual return to 75 °F in spring.
Given the lack of any direct data, clutch size, incubation period, and larval care strategy are all unknown. If the abdomino-lip brooding strategy of related genera (Loricaria, Brochiloricaria) applies, the male would carry or guard eggs near the lip region; the duration of paternal care, if any, is unrecorded.
In the aquarium
Ricola macrops is occasionally available in the specialty whiptail catfish trade, particularly in Europe where the lower Paraná region contributes regular shipments of loricariid species. It is not assigned an L-number. At 8.5 in SL, it is a medium-sized whiptail suitable for larger aquaria — a tank of at least 47 in length is recommended for adults.
Water conditions should replicate the lower Paraná and Río de la Plata region: temperature 68–75 °F (significantly cooler than tropical whiptails), pH 6.5–7.2, soft to moderately hard water (up to approximately 15 dH). The cooler temperature range is critical; maintaining this species at tropical temperatures (>82 °F) may cause stress and immune problems over time. A winter cool-down may benefit long-term health and potentially stimulate reproductive behaviour.
Substrate should be fine sand or fine gravel; like most Loricariinae, the fish is benthic and will spend much of its time resting on the bottom or pressed against surfaces. Moderate current in at least part of the aquarium is advisable. The tank should not be brightly lit; dimmer conditions or shaded areas with plants or driftwood are preferred.
Diet should centre on sinking algae-based foods and blanched vegetables; meaty frozen foods can be supplemented. Compatible tankmates include cool-water tetras, barbs tolerant of 68–75 °F temperatures, and other loricariids of compatible size. The species is not suited to fully tropical community tanks.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Ricola macrops as Least Concern in 2020, noting a relatively wide distribution across the lower Paraná basin and no evidence of severe range contraction or population decline sufficient to meet threatened thresholds.
The lower Paraná basin is one of the most heavily modified river systems in South America. Major threats include water impoundment by numerous dams on the Paraná River and its tributaries, which alter flow regimes, trap sediment, and disrupt thermal cycles; floodplain drainage and conversion for agriculture and urban development; pollution from intensive agriculture (soy, maize, rice) in the upper catchment; and commercial and artisanal fisheries pressure on larger river species. For a benthic loricariid tied to floodplain habitats, the loss of connected wetland areas and altered flood pulse represent the most direct habitat threats.
Uruguay lists Ricola macrops as Near Threatened in the national freshwater fish checklist (CLOFF-UY), reflecting higher concern at a local level. This contrast with the global IUCN assessment may indicate that the species is more restricted or rare in the northern extent of its range in Uruguay than the overall assessment implies. Further survey work across the distribution is warranted.
